Most of the time they don't represent the majority of any fan community.

Hhhmmm... these lists seem to confirm something that I've suspected for a while now. Mecha animes are actually the most popular animes in Japan, and by a fair margin.

I do think that Haruhi Suzumiya has become "the female face" of anime here in the west.

Not really, it's just that Newtype polls skew to Sunrise productions. As in, any Gundam and Code Geass.

Though yeah, Haruhi has stayed particularly strong, all thanks to it's merchandise strategy, the soon to air Churuya and Haruhi-chan series, and the always in production Season 2.
