Am I able to just jump right into action comics. Or do I have to read back issues to know whats going on?

RIGHT now? A few months' worth of back issues would help. The Superman books are currently in the midst of a multi-part crossover storyline that builds off of several older stories.

I mean, it's not like you wouldn't be able to figure out what's going on. But a few back issues wouldn't hurt at all.

Right now you need to read just "Last Son" and "Brainiac" to get "New Krypton". But the thing is that the "New Krypton" arc is crossing over into Superman and Supergirl, right now.

I'm confused... Exactly which issues make up Last Son? It had a bunch of delays?

Action Comics #844-846, 851 and Annual #11. It's collected.

You'll also want to get Action Comics Annual #10, which is not collected, but shows the backstory which makes up "Last Son".

That is not part of the Trade? Well that is stupid.

Last Son is a good jump on point, but to get the nitch of the entirety of what is going on with Superman's character as a whole, you don't have to go far back. Just start at Up, Up, and Away. And if you want read Superman, getting back issues will be helpful by learning more about what is in the now, and filling the holes between time.

Annual #10 isn't collected because it is a collection of stories that stands too far apart from the "Last Son" arc in terms of narration. All but one short story sets up LS, while that remaining one sets up the following arc in the Johns/Donner run.
