I hope they'll be able to pinpoint when Batman morphed into the paranoid, surly douchebag we have today...

Well, know I know where that weird red blimp from Morrison's latest issue came from. I know Gotham's a "blimp-loving" town and I expected it was from a ways back ... but that's as far back as "a ways back" goes!

Good Article, can't wait for the next part. One thing though, the Picture you displayed of The Batman serial is from the 1949 Serial starring Robert Lowery and John Duncan as Batman and Robin.

Detective Comics #33- 'The Batman Wars Against The Dirigible Of Doom' is where that's from. It's a direct panel homage. Dunno how that would fit in with contemporary times though,

The pair would first team-up in the pages of "World's Finest" #71 (July- August 1954)
That's not true. They first teamed up in Superman #76 (May/June 1952).
I also think it's important to add that Batman's newspaper serial began in 1943. This was many non-comic readers' first introduction to the dynamic duo.
And I second darknyt4's point that the picture is from the wrong Batman serial.
