View Full Version : Which of Batman's rogues did Jason Todd encounter/deal with when he was Robin?

Jason Todd's tenure as Robin was very short in comparison to those of his predecessor (Dick Grayson) and his successor (Tim Drake). If we take into account that Jason was a very different character Post-COIE than he was before the First Crisis, then his time as Robin seems especially short: fewer than two years of real time and probably considerably less than that in continuity time.
So how many of Batman's rogues did Jason encounter/fight against when he was Robin? Obviously, he went up against the Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, and Penguin. Beyond this, however, I forget who else he might have squared off against. Ra's Al Ghul was sort of missing in action during most of the 1980s when Jason was active as Robin, and characters such as Bane and Hush had not been created yet.
What's odd is that since Jason was revived, he seems familiar with a number of Bat rogues against whom he did not have any encounters during his Robin days.

So, are you only considering post-crisis issues, then?

I think many pre-Crisis jason stories still happened (see Nocturna and Morrison implying all is pretty much in in some form).
Ra's had many appearances in the 80's.

Mostly, yeah...because I don't know which (if any) Pre-COIE Jason as Robin adventures are still in continuity.
COIE robbed Jason of probably his finest outing: saving Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman's butts from Mongul.

Black Mask was created during the run when Jason Todd was Robin and there are a couple of stories around him.
Doug Moench also really developed out Harvey Bullock during the same run and he would play Bullock off of Jason Todd.

That appears to be in continuity as shown in Green Lantern Corps and the Mongul story arc.

Didn't know that. Lots of evidence then that many Pre-COIE Jason stories are in canon. Hell if the Silver Age Batman stories are in canon now, then these can/must be in.

Two-Face has to be a given as already mentioned, but does he still have the history with Todd that was established 20 years ago? Do current writers remember that Two-Face murdered his father?

Even though Jason couldn't have been Robin much longer than a year ... maybe two stretching things ... he did become Robin at the absolute height of Teen Titan and Justice League action.
Stands to reason that he can be tied to a lot more crazy jazz than most would remember. In fact, a good direction for him in the future might be to tie him to some of the one-note characters or rare characters that he did encounter.
Mongul, I don't know about. Unless Jason were to become a Red Lantern or something.

That's a damn good history. Since his revival, Jason's history seems to begin with his death. Who knows what counts as his early life history and his pre-death history as Robin these days?
If Jason isn't going away, maybe it's time to revisit just who this character is supposed to be.

Titans, yes, but Jason's tenure as Robin coincided with a time of transition and instability for the Justice League. The iconic Silver/Bronze Age team had fractured, and was replaced by the "Detroit" Justice League for a time before the latter was itself replaced by the JLI team.

Nah, Jason should just go away. Better off dead, better off as the dead troubled soldier hero.
As for his history, his tire-stealing street punk origin has been shown repeatedly in Hush and since, indicating it's continued canonicity. Presumably then, Willis Todd being murdered by Two-Face still happened, just as Joker murdering Sheila still happened.

Yes. It's acknowledged during "A Death in the Family."
Considering Bruce's thoroughness in training and preparation, I think it's entirely plausible that Jason would have known many of Batman's villains without actually meeting them. Of course, he was also around for several of DC's major event storylines (COIE, Legends, Millenium, etc) and may have met villains during those.
It's been a long time since I read the post-COIE Jason Todd stories, but I believe he also encountered:
Mad Hatter
Film Freak
Killer Croc
Lady Shiva
This is, by no means, a complete list of villains he encountered. It's just what I remember (or think I remember) off the top of my head.
Yes. It's acknowledged during "A Death in the Family."
But is there any indication that when Jason bumps into Two-Face again that this bit of history will come into play or is that one of the pieces of Batman lore that is now considered to be irrelevant to today's canon? ie. "Those stories still happened, just maybe not the way you remember". I understand Jason going after the Joker when he returned, but you'd have to imagine that Harvey Dent is next on his list. I guess it's impossible to answer this question if Jason hasn't faced Two-Face yet, but does anyone have a sense of where DC feels Jason's history stands as of now? Is it just "Jason Todd stole some wheels of the Batmobile, become Robin, and was then killed by the Joker when he went to look for his mother"?

Jason took on CRAZY QUILT. A Villain Grayson fought a couple of times. once solo, and another time with Batman.

Wow I remember that He hates Robin more than Batman and Jason got the blame for all of Dick's stories.
Does Jason have Red hair again. I think he used to color it as robin or has that gone away

Pre-COIE Jason Todd had natural red hair; Post-COIE Jason Todd has natural black hair.

It makes you wonder how a multiverse collapsing in on itself can change one's hair follicles. I'm guessing there's no need for Just For Men in the DC Universe, what with the constant continuity reboots or the good chance that your gray hair is the result of a yellow fear parasite.
