What is your favorite non Miller Batman TPB? The Dark Knight Returns, Year One, and any other TPBs by him are not allowed, since those stories would probably be on pretty much everyone's list.
My top 3:
1. Batman and Poison Ivy: Cast Shadows (relatively unknown, but it is a masterpiece.)
2. Hush
3. Batman: Tales of the Demon (Ra's Al Ghul)
4. Batman: The Long Halloween.
5.Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth.

3. The Black Glove
2. Batman in the Seventies
1. Strange Apparitions
If we're counting graphic novels, I'd put Arkham Asylum at the very top of my list and bump everything else down one space.

They would?
I mean, I can see The Dark Knight Returns, but I'd rank quite a few higher than Year One and The Dark Knight Strikes Again.
And why limit it to trade paperbacks? The Doug Moench/Kelley Jones run on Batman was fantastic, yet I don't think one issue has been collected. How much of Denny O'Neil, Steve Englehart and Neil Adams's work has been collected?
Anyway, given the scope of the question, I would go with Strange Apparitions, Mad Love, The Killing Joke and The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told.

Great Thread:
Anybody who posts alongside me on these boards knows i am an avid fan of Denny o'neill's work on the Batman titles and can't friggin wait to see what he does on the bat titles next week, with his two part story *Last days of Gotham*
There is probably tons more stories i am missing and might remember them all later and will come back to post about them.
1.Batman: Shaman--Denny O'Neill
2.Batman: Venom--Denny O'Neill
3.Batman:Prey--Doug Moench
4.Batman:Heart of Hush-Paul dini and Dustin Nyugun
5. Hush--Jeph Loeb and jim lee
6.Batman:Faces --Matt wagner
7.Batman:Blades---tim sale and James Robinson
8.Gotham central Vol 2. By greg rucka
9.Batman; RIP---Grant Morrison and Tony Daniel
10.Batman: Batman and Son. --Grant Morrison and andy Kubert
O'neill set up pretty much the whole backstory, locations and ideas for all the stuff they would go on to do with BANE and the Knightfall Trilogy in his work on the Legends of the Dark knight anicillary batman title, especially Batman: venom.

I have it bagged and boarded and safe in my long comic batman box:)
don't mean to rub it in but it's a class issue, love the catooney style of bruce timm's pencils.
and guess what? This is the first comic book appearance of Harley Quinn! she went on to have her own title and appeared in plenty of the batman books over the years.

I'd rank Year One rather highly along with DKR. But as far as DKSA and ASBR no, those wouldn't rank, Miller wrote good Batman stories, but he is not the be all and end all of the genre.

Woops! I meant to put top 5 in the thread title, not top 3.
Also what is Batman and the Monster Men about? It made a couple of people's top lists.
Also any Batman book is allowed, as long as it is not JLA.
So Tec, Gotham Central, etc, are all valid as long as they have TPBs.

Matt wagner wrote 12 issues of batman set around the time of year one(frank miller)
They are broken down into 2 Trade paperbacks.
Batman and the Monster men-#1-#6
Batman and the Mad monk#1-#6
Both awesome, Hugo strange and carmine falcone are the villains in the first one and the mad monk is the villain in the second one.

I wish Wagner had a series covering the Bats early years. More than just Dark Moon Rising. I've only read the mad monk story (I ordered both but "Monster Men hasn't arrived yet) and its among the best I've read. Enoug for me to wish for more

I don't feel qualified to answer the post question about best since I only have a few, but I do have to echo Monster Men... I loved it. I think I actually liked Mad Monk a little better, but a little disappointing in the end. I really like Hugo Strange in Monster Men.

2. The Black Glove. J.H. Williams, man. What a beautiful arc that was. Story's kinda meh for me, but the art...
3. I dunno... something... maybe the Black and White books... any of them?

It's tricky. Much as I think Batman's a great character, his TPBs tend to not be that great.
Anyway here goes
1 - The TPB collecting Peter Milligan's run which which exists only in my head
2 - No Man's Land v1
3 - Batman and Son
