View Full Version : OJ Simpson's sentencing...

I was fixing breakfast and thought I'd hear what the outcome was, but after his one lawyer going on and on and on and on about the Civil War I wanted to give him life without the possibility of parole! Then, his other lawyer got up and started brown-nosing the judge while telling her he wasn't brown-nosing her to the amusement of the gallery. All of this with the promise that Simpson himself would speak soon. It was all too much, I had to turn the channel. When, during breakfast, I finally turned it back, the 2nd lawyer was STILL talking.
Now, about a half an hour later, the judge is talking. She basically has said that the 2nd lawyer's discussion of why OJ did what he did doesn't matter, his argument seemed rather desperate to me (but I'm not a lawyer) and I'm happy to see it set aside. Maybe sometime around noon, CA time, she'll have rendered her verdict.

Well, she finally rendered her verdict, which they summed up on Chyron as 15 years. I'm eager to have Loren or someone take a shot at all the concurrents and how they work in terms of parole eligibility.

Amazing how fast we can get to a proper verdict and sentencing when the defendant can't afford to spend 7 figures on lawyers, ain't it?

Oh, stewardess? I speak jive(or SuperE-ese, as the case may be):
The Chewbacca defense is a fictional legal strategy used in Chef Aid. It is a form of Red Herring argument, used to deliberately confuse the jury. The concept satirized attorney Johnnie Cochran's closing argument defending O. J. Simpson in his murder trial. In court, Cochran resorts to his "famous" Chewbacca defense, which he "used during the Simpson trial", according to Stan.
Anywho, back to the topic at hand...
What is the typical sentence for these charges? Is this average?

As she read through them, they seemed to be middle of the road in terms of harshness. They could've been consecutive, which would mean he wouldn't get out for a whole lot longer, but by making them concurrent, I think he has to serve the minimums in all the lessers, before being eligible for parole in the major. Again, I'm not a lawyer and I'd welcome some discussion.
It's for the armed robbery/kidnapping in Vegas that he called "a sting operation," ingnorant of the fact that if you're not a cop, you can't sting.

September of last year, Simpson tried to rob some sports memorabilia(oh, forgot to add: he claims the stuff was stolen from him first, and that he was trying to get it back). He's charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, burglary with a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon, coercion with use of a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

To be fair, OJ was not trying to rob anyone, he was trying to recover his own property.
Of course being a thug, he went about it in the most thuggish way possible.

Charges were never brought against the individual whom OJ claims stole the stuff from him, correct?

It was probably on consignment or something.

No, no, there was very little argument about the property belonging to SImpson, it's the guns and kidnapping that turned it into a robbery.
It doesn't make what he did any less of a crime.

Where is Al Cowlings to scream "FREE THE JUICE , THE JUICE IS INNOCENT DAMN IT !" ? I think OJ went to jail because Cowlings wasn't there to yell it loudly .

i think he claimed he didnt know his friends were going to do that. if this is true i have a little sympathy. i used to hang out with losers too. but then again, im not a judge so i can be glad the guy got sent up the river after having the nerve to write that book

Don't get me wrong, my sympathy for the Juice is nil.
Especially when you figure that after ducking out of a double murder conviction, he was stupid enough to go and commit another set of felonies.
Honestly, if I had been him, I'd have done by best to never get so much as a speeding ticket.

Also, along with things that had once been his property, he and his pals appropriated boxes of other sports memorabilia from the dealer they robbed.

He was tried for, convicted of and sentenced on armed robbery. Was it stuff that once belonged to him? Yes. Did he still own it? Maybe, but possession is 9/10 of the law and he hadn't the right to regain it in the way he did. Part of what went into the conviction of his buddy was the fact that he still has, and has refused to return some of that property to the people they kidnapped and robbed.

OJ Simpson? THE OJ Simpson? Shit, the guy can escape from the charges when he has killed a woman, but couldn't do it when he robbed somethings. Talk about strange...

Assuming the sentence tops out at fifteen years, I'm thinking Simpson will probably serve about five to ten years, provided of course, that the conviction holds up on appeal, and if he doesn't receive a pardon or commutation of sentence somewhere down the line.

They got Capone on tax evasion.
I don't think there will be an appeal, based upon what his lawyers said this morning. They talked about how remorseful Simpson is, and that he knows he was wrong, the only legal possibility they presented today was a form that wasn't filled out completely enough, which they wanted to use to postpone sentencing. The DA countered the argument and the judge dismissed the defendants' motion.

OJ's case wasn't helped when he urinated on the prosecutor's shoes.

Ya know I am really pissed at the Criminal Justice system now. I mean really ? Your putting OJ Simpson away now after he's basically not mega rich , but doing high above middle class wise in money ?
This is wrong. Our "Justice System" has it in writing that we do not put people in jail who make lots of money. Its damn wrong. What message does this send to a Puff Daddy , Phil Spector or anyone else who fucks up who is rich ?
Is it right they should go to jail like Joe Schmoe ? What values are we teaching our children ? Shouldn't we demand our kids be successes so they can commit felonies and not risk a jail sentence ?

OJ's in great company, Martha and Paris! I'm sure he'd prefer it if he were standing next to either of them during the strip search.

There was very little argument becuase it made no difference whether he thought it was his, it was his, or belonged the the victim. Once he used the gun and threats it just did not matter any more.

From what the judge was saying, the robbery was the robbery, and the armed came into it because one gun was brandished and another present. With those guns, they forbade everyone to leave, which is when it became kidnapping.
I think the issue of whether or not it was still Simpson's property is debatable, and even if it was, there's the question of whether or not it had been stolen.
Ultimately it doesn't matter too much as we'll not be hearing much of "the Juice" until 6 years from now.

Which should've been the main part of his defense: "I don't see what the big deal is, your Honour. It's not like he killed anybody."

My reply to this is: OJ did not deserve the sentence to this crime(s). No way does he deserve the sentence he got. Saying that I feel no sympathy to the thug? No wait he aint even a thug, He's a wannabe or, but anyways, his sentence is BS for what he did.

Bush couldn't pardon Simpson, even if he wanted to. Simpson was convicted under state law. The President can only pardon offenders for violating federal law. It's up to an appellate court or the governor of Nevada to save his sorry butt now. I'm hoping that doesn't happen.

I wasn't really following the sentencing part of it today, but depending on what sports site you visited it was either 9, 15, or 30 years? And all of the sites seemed adamant on their number.
But yes I do agree with you sorta. He is doing time for being an idiot. Not for robbery (he was getting his own stuff back) or for killing people, but for being an idiot that didn't want to let the authorities do their thing or be patient enough for it to happen.

I heard the sentence was at a total of 33 years, of which he must serve at least 9 because of the special circumstance of a crime committed with the use of a firearm. No tears for OJ.

OJ is just and idiot. He knew that after he walked on killing his wife that he was basically on probabtion for the rest of his life as far as the law goes. It was just common sence that if he screwed up again after getting away with murder they were going to throw him in the pen for as long as the could if they ever got the chance.
The sentence is fine with me and he can rot in jail until they bring him out feet first.
