EVERYONE loves an appreciation thread, apparently, and this is the thread for we share our appreciation for the 127th edition of Jack Flash's long running internet game Name that X. Please try and keep on topic everyone.

This particular edition was a bit of a thrill ride, here's a quick reminder:

It R Icarus!

Fuego?????

Cable...........?

Elixir!!!!

Freakin'

QUICKSILVAH!

I'll go with Havok!

Correct!

5 points to wbe!

Pietro!

Awww, now who is WBE going to guess?

About time! And I have a new default first male pick...

I loved this game! even although I didn't get a chance to join in on this round, it was a particularly thrilling episode, with WBE picking up all 5 points on the first clue.

Since it's Jedmas, I'm sure we can all appreciate Jack Flash's efforts, that goes without saying, he is freakishly awesome.

But what were YOUR favourite moments in this round?

Appreciate away!

timbox's dispair over who WBE will pick was great, I love that line. I wanted to put it in my signature, but felt one quote from timbox was enough.

If somebody wants to start appreciation threads for each of the other 171 rounds that would be cool, there seem to be some threads on the first page that are currently non-appreciation ones

Another point of interest, should WBE really have won? He typed "Quicksilvah" not Quicksilver, which would have been the correct answer.

Yeah, I think he deserved those points. Hopefully when Jed returns from having a life (how dare he not be posting on the internet on his birthday?) he can give us an inside look into the marking process.

Oh, and now updated with POLL!

You need to learn your history of appreciation threads.

The History of CBR Appreciation Threads
by Novaya Havoc

Two years ago, there was a brilliant title published by the LEGENDARY Christopher Claremont: New Excalibur. Many wars were raged in threads about this title, often started by heretical Dazzler fans.

Warriors of CHIRSTopher Claremont told the Dazzler fans to leave their threads and "take ur playa h8 elsewhere, foos!" Well, they would have said that, had they had a sense of humor. It was more condescending.

So the prophet Tetragene created "The Dazzler Thread" as a haven for victims of religous persecution. The community thrived.

Eventually, "The Dazzler Thread" was merged with the "Kylie Minogue IS Dazzler" thread, begun some time prior by the soothsayer Novaya Havoc. It was rechristened "The Dazzler Thread: Featuring KYLIE MINOGUE as DAZZLER!"

The small community flourished into a tidal wave of CBR political power. Soon, CHRISTopher Claremont Warriors infiltrated this peaceful community in an effort to troll and pillage its residents. Wars ensued, with the persecuted defending their land: it was created to reduce conflicts over the sacred New Excalibur texts, and should be left well enough alone.

Almighty God-King Brian Cronin then banished these seeds of discontent from "The Dazzler Thread" and turned it into "The Dazzler Appreciation Thread: Featuring KYLIE MINOGUE as DAZZLER!" to keep the old order away from the new colony.

Thus, other "Appreciation" threads followed in imitation, attempting to copy the divine works of these few posting pioneers.

But it was never originally conceived as an "Appreciation" thread. Now many unholy sects have emerged in outright mimicry: consider this as an allegory to the purity of the Roman Catholic Church and the various, treacherous Protestant sects that claim they have a closer connection to fandom.

In short: accept no substitutes.

I suppose, technically speaking that Tetragene could have copyrighted the concept, similar to Jed's "Name that X" and WBE's "Dirty Deeds".

I cetainly hope Tetragene does not decide to object, I would hate to see all the imitation appreciation threads struck from the forum.

Enough banter, lets get back on topic.

Josef F. made an interesting statement when he said "it R Icarus?" What does this mean exactly? I feel like it's a phrase R'Chl may have used once, but I'll need to reference my CC back issues to be sure.

"The Dazzler Thread" predates both "Dirty Deeds" and "Name That X."

It, however, does not predate mattbib's "Draw Me and X" or "DMAX." And "Appreciation" is not copyrighted by Tetragene. It is copyrighted by Brian Cronin. Only He has the power.

As a footnote:
One could argue that the thread "I Heart Havok" begun by Flight was the first true appreciation thread on CBR. However, this is like arguing that William Jefferson Clinton is America's first "black President." Clearly, Barack Obama is.

Moreover, "I Heart Havok" is irrelevant as it does not relate to the current discourse of the origin of the Appreciation thread. "The Dazzler Thread" is the crux of understanding the cultural phenomenon.

As far as I remember, the I Heart Havok thread was mainly off topic postings about Stevie Wonder.

Goddamn right I should have em!

I picked Quicksilver for like 40 straight Name that X's! About time it was correct.

Did Flight not start the "name that x" threads too?

Anyone who has been here for 4 years or more will remember this gem that we used to play everyone afternoon weekday hosted by the legendary Mattfeth. He with the Maverick avatar, who, if I remember, had to quit coming to the forum due to family responsibilities.

Mattbib also had his spin on the game in 2005 titled "Name That Marvel"

Well now its BACK for 2007 hosted by the fabulous me!

For those of you who don't know the rules, its very simple:

A single clue will be posted each day.
One guess, per person, per clue.
The answers will be either mutants (past & present) or other X-related characters.
No internet searches (i.e. no cutting/pasting the clue into a search engine).
The first person to guess correctly is the winner.
Characters guessed after one clue are worth 5 points, after two are worth 4, and so forth, after three are worth 3 points, after four are worth 2 points, and after five or more are worth 1 point.
There will be a scoreboard and hopefully I can keep this up daily (except for weekdays)

Thanks to Mattbib & Bri for their input!

The first clue to the new contest:

This character can fly!

there you have it.

Are we appreciating only "Name that X # 127" or the whole "Name that X" idea?

I appreciate those.

Ahhhh...I remember Name That X #127 like it was yesterday....the drama.... the suspense.....I was in the lead with 42 ponts at that time and I thought for sure that I had that one in the bag with Fuego.

Little did I realize that it would propel WBE to a position as a worthy adversary, and mark the beginning of a dry spell for me in the competition...

Vice-versa, actually. My "Name That Marvel" started on 10/29/02. I remember when sometime later mattfeth, cool guy that he was, actually asked me out of total courtesy if it was alright if he did an X-Men version (which he called "X Marks the Spot"). I kept Name That Marvel going for about 2 1/2 years.

Then mattfeth disappeared to work on his marriage or something...haven't heard from him in years.
