even though i dont know what this anime is about, the dubbing was pretty good. but its a masterpiece compared to what could've happened to it.

Otaku? What an ignorant misuse of japanese terminology. And I watch both Japanese dub and English dub with almost all my anime, thank you very much, So I'm thankfully not as bigoted and judgemental when formulating opinions about dubbing(unlike some people).

Oh, and thank you for proving that seniority does not necessarily beget maturity.

None of the characters have any personality in the dub. They sound like cartoon characters. Like the Smurfs or w/e. It's horrible. And there's none of the chemistry the Japanese cast has.

It's good for the hardcore anime fans who've grown accostumed to lousy voice actors nobody else will hire. And don't tell me I've grown used to the Japanese voices, I can tell by ear when videogames voice acting is handled by anime "professionals".

Comparing between the two it seems like a pretty solid dub.

Changing the Japanese names was little annoying but this is only the test phase so that could change. The voice actors themselves were pretty good.

I don't see why you're so upset really, it's pretty good and could have been so much worse.

I do agree with the OP. Being a fan of the original, it is hard to not thing the Funimation version is pretty bad.

The characterization of the characters are off. The narrator is way too overboard in the English version. The names are horrific (shortening the characters names and changing the names of the planets... I mean "Wussians? Come on). Keroro does not sound froggy. Giroro (the red one) seems a bit too jocular and talky compared to the original. The cat is a female. Kululu (orange/yellow) sounds like a dork... while it is true he is a geek, he is more like a pervert/creep than just nerdy. None of them have the affectations in character that really match the original. Tamama probably comes closest.

It may not be displayed in this singular episode, but it really changed the tone of the original. Just seems wrong.

Could have been worse is not a really good review.

It's probably harder on the fans (such as I am) since the project was delayed for a long time. After the license was bungled by ADV, there was a great hope that Funimation would rescue it. Instead we get a "Shin-Chan" (I watched the originals of those too and it was much, much different).

Exactly Beta Ray. The translations are lazy too. None of the word games on frog sounds from the original versions are there... And word games are a big part of the series. The translation sounding like a lazy translation/rewriting job isn't very promising.

Unless this comes with sub and original vas, I think I'm gonna settle for buying the Chinese version.

Eh, you're getting bilingual DVD's, so it's not like you're being forced to listen to the dub. Heck, Funimation will probably even cram it into affordable 13 episode sets. Which'll save you money, and include *fully translated credits* and other stuff by accredited people who know actual japanese and can translate all the geeky stuff properly. I'm curious if they're having ADV dub it like other unfinished Sojitz series.

Apparently when ADV had it, they came close to selling it to Nickolodeon as a kids-tv dub [and would of presumably also marketed an uncut version, like they had with other kids anime they've done], and had created a few different trial dubs in the process of trying to get it on TV. Would of been interesting.

Sonny, I hate to break your bubble, but... Keroro Gunso never was a Code Geass or Evangelion. It *is* a freakin' cartoony, loony, Japanese equivalent of the Smurfs/Animaniacs/and-the-like children-oriented American cartoons. Live with it.

That might've been cool. The only Nickelodeon show that gets on my nerves is Fairly Odd Parents. But they've got good voice acting standards overall. And even FOD isn't anywhere as bad as that funimation dub. I love Mighty Bee. The acting's top quality in that. All the characters have a wonderful personality.

Guess I'll just stick to watching Sgt Keroro fridays on TV Tokyo as it airs!! KELO!KELO!KELO!

Ummm.... most of the Japanese word games are based on Japanese phomemes that have no direct correlation in english. Obvious examples being nose=flower (hana) and cloud=spider (kumo), if I may borrow from "Akazukin Cha Cha". It is less a translation issue, and more of a case of the entire language being structurally different. In such a case, a direct translation, especially for an audience who does not know the nuances of that particular part of that language, seldom makes coherent sense with the reaction of the characters as depicted on the screen and in the following lines. On the other hand, creating something similiar to try to fill in the space runs into problems such as: is it an approrpiate joke, is the joke any good, does it make since right then, does it match the mouth flaps of the animation closely enough, et cetera.

Essentially, such situations are a lose/lose proposition for most human translators, who simply try to do the best they can.

That's not even getting into the fact that the onomatopeia for the sound a frog makes in Japan (kero) is significantly different from the sound a frog makes in English (ribbit).

Anyway, try not to be too harsh on the translators of humor-style series like this. It really is harder than what one would think.

The "subbed" version on the DVD won't be the same translation as the dub?

It is becoming more common to use a more direct translation for the subtitle script, since the people most likely to watch something like that in the original language with subtitles are more aware of the differences in the language. Just expectations on various parts of the consumer base. Now, admittedly there are still some shows that use the dub script for the subtitle track, but it is usually not too hard to figure out who is using what where before purchasing.

And honestly, it's been so long since I bothered listening to an English dub I probably cannot say anything about them (other than the fact that you should listen to the "Shinesman" English dub).

True, it's hard, but they could've at least tried making something out of the frog sounds. As is, and based on my experience watching dubs since I was a kid, it looks like a pretty bland children cartoon compared to something awesome such as Mighty Bee, Ruby Gloom or even SpongeBob Squarepants. All it's got going for it dubbed is the 2 frames a minute animation.
