This thread is dedicated to the original X-Force. This book was how a team of rebel mutants should be done. Great writing by Fabian Nicieza and even J. Loeb and phenomenal art by Messrs. Capullo, Cheung and Pollina(We won't mention Rod Leftfield). This was possibly one of the best X-books that focused on up and coming mutants.

This book showed the best growth and development of Cannonball. His development has been downhill ever since. This guy was groomed to be the next great leader.

This book showed the best growth and development of Cannonball. His development has been downhill ever since. This guy was groomed to be the next great leader.
I liked Cannonball. The book had it's moments and Cannonball was typically one of the strongest characters in the book and a worthy team leader. True he has gone downhill since. I think it's largely that once he was thrown into the main X-cast he largely became redundant, because he was sort of Neo-Cyclops, but more militant and younger. Carey seemed like he was on the right path when he indicated he might become more active and independent in his Manifest Destiny (or was it Divided We Stand?) storyline.
I also liked Cable. But minus Cable and Cannonball, none of the characters were that strong. And minus X-over events, they didn't have much of a point. I do like the development's they made to Siryn, Rictor, and Warpath though (in later books). Boom Boom I don't remember from X-Force, but I did like in Nextwave. Sunspot was kinda interesting, but he got so little time (that I recall) that it was basically a non-factor.
So yeah, that's all I have to say. Cable was the money maker, Cannonball the token "good character" and the rest were just sort of random mutant filler.

Imo I thinks these characters shined greater here than anywhere else and their stories were more than just what crossover are we invovled in this time. It's like they took the best of Xavier and Magneto and came up with the definitive rebel X-team. Also if you recall, Cable spent very little time with this team.

I thought the book got pretty strong around the purple and yellow costume days. Less paramilitary and more about young people forming a non-traditional family. No dads or moms around(the X-men are a family but always have basic family dynamics in place.)

the original xforce has been my favorite stories to read. i know people dont like liefeld but i really wish he would have stayed in the book and see where he was taking cannonball, cable, tolliver and the xternals. i really didnt like tony's art (though his work on the tenth is awesome) and pollina's art was just terrible (but i liked his work in charlmagne...what happend it was so nice?). i miss this era of the xtitles

They did have a good family feel but I enjoyed the paramilitary feel the book had early on as well.

What's the point of an appreciation thread if we can't appreciate the guy who started the title in the first place? We wouldn't have it without him. Instead we'd probably have some boring New Mutant title written by Louise Simonson writing about Birdboy and some really wishy-washy mutants.

In all honesty, I loved the original X-Force for what it was. They were awol New Mutants and Cable's strike force. I little latter when Loeb took over it got a bit off track I felt, but the character development in this title was always pretty good, you must admit.

I liked the team shortly after operation zero tolerance, the stories werent that great, but I liked the team lineup, with Moonstar, Siryn, Warpath, Boom-Boom, Sunspot, etc. (in case I missed any members). I liked it too when Domino returned as well, having someone besides cable lead was nice.

My favorites are issues 3 and 4. Spider-Man looks like a bunch of saussages, Warpath has 3 buttocks and the coloring in 4 is so obnoxious that it's hard to make out half of the comic. You can tell issue 4 was done in 2 or 3 days. Classics that will never get old.
Marc Paccella did a nice effort, the horrible was there, but not the magic.

Feral was amazing in X-Force. Her turn to the evil side was really made me love her honestly. It was great and so needed. I was REALLY angry when Morrison un-did it and made her a domesticated house cat in New X-Men. The girl needs to be ressurected via Romulus, have a mad on for Wolverine (since he LET her die in Loeb's HORRIBLE story arc) and attack X-Force where she'll finally show Rahne whose the boss. Wolfsbane is expendable. Plus, it'd be awesome to see Feral gut Wolfsbane and watch as an undigested eye ball of her fathers rolls out, lol.

Let's not forget Feral's sister! Feral and Thorn no doubt have a strong furry following on deviantart, not that I'd want to check but it can't be ignored. Not to mentionThorn was created by Liefeld so she's a totally legit, official character.
I'm sad it was revealed Feral was abused, way to ruin her awesome character. I liked it better when she was just plain NASTEEE. I didn't like Loeb cause it was kind of kitsch. They retconned Boomboom's dad into this cartoonish, overweight child beater when he was a slim, average joe child beater, taking away from the pognancy of Secret Wars 2. I liked Pollina's art but the stories weren't very deep or psychologically significant.

An original X-Force thread. Now this is my kind of thread. John Francis Moore was certainly my favorite writer for the series. I am always going back and rereading his run. As far as the art, Adam Pollina hold the title for my favorite and definitive X-Force artist. Greg Capullo and Jim Cheung also did an bang up job.
I thought that the series was pretty well written throughout with maybe the exception of the Warren Ellis era. It wasn't bad per say, I just though the characters weren't acting all that in character. I am still baffled as to why Sam would consult with Jesse on the future of the team.

It was. Unless you wanted Cannonball and Meltdown to end up happily ever after. It was on the trip that she ended up shtupping his best friend, Sunspot.
High drama.
But the road trip also had them at the Burning Man Festival with pink-haired (Not Fat) Karma, battling Selene, teaming up with the Mutant Liberation Front against Operation Zero Tolerance, and helping a young wanker escape his debt to the mob by pretending to be hired enforcers themselves!

Idk. That was one of the things that bothered me about Liefeld's New Mutants/X-Force. I think they were trying to use the excuse to come up with some new characters, ala Cable, to help bring a new wave of very awesome mutants for a new generation. Plus it had some yummy Terry Dodson art.
It was a development that needed to happen, and I'm glad it happened with Fabes instead of someone like Loeb messing it up. I liked Loeb's run alright, it just wasn't as good as Fabian's, imo. Plus, his Shatterstar origin sucked hardcore.

i started reading comics by picking up x-force 9 from the floor of my moms car, possibly left there by my one of my brother's friends. i was hooked. this was way back in 4th grade. i followed the comic for years, slowly being dragged into the more x-men titles, but always adoring x-force and cable the most. looking back, i know that the issues weren’t as good as i remember them (as with most things when yr a kid), but they hit that imaginative part of my young mind, real hard. i thought about them all the time, especially being fixated on cable, cannonball, and domino in the early years. as well as their militancy, and rebelliousness from the x-men. also important to that era was the idea that cable gave these kids the option to grow up, he treated them like adults, and had faith in their ability.
as the years went on cable and x-force became more like peers and the kids grew apart from him, but still they respected him greatly.
issue 19 was my favorite. cannonball’s confrontation with xavior, as other members are stealing data from the professor's computers was great.
i remember really liking issue 22 when cable was thought dead and he left them a shit-ton of weapons. its a shame that didn’t go anywhere, i thought the kids would have this new edge with all these future weapons. nothing came from it other than a cool cover.
i stopped reading in the 40s, i just got disinterested in comics in general. a couple years later i got back into x-force, bought all the issues i missed (as well as all the new mutants) and kept up with it until the x-statix team started. the highlights of that run were the pollina art, the character development, and the fun. some of the enemies really sucked in that era. but overall i enjoyed it. a good change for the team, even if i missed them kicking ass and pissing off the x-men. in this era meltdown and warpath really grew on me, and caliban as well. when cheung got onboard i thought the stories went downhill, alongside the art. and the rest of the series was mediocre.
the counter x stuff was pretty bad. all the crazy sci-fi back ops stuff was too much. and pete wisdom sucked. the team was tight and powerful, powers were used in new ways, but that’s about all it had going for it.
x-forces militancy and rebelliousness informed my political ideas, as well as got me questioning the tactics used by x-men and x-factor, and the role of cops and pacifists in the real world. it might sound silly, but that meant a lot to me.
the period after Liefield left, when nicieza took over, was my favorite. its a shame that important things from that time were not carried into the present. such as, cable being as important, philosophically, as magneto and xavior. and the presence of a group to rival in many ways, both the x-men (pacifists) and x-factor (government employees or cops), as well as cannonballs capacity to lead that renegade group.

But Kitty Pryde swallowed.
Speaking the dark Counter-X days (which I agree WERE terrible for X-Force), I always got the impression that Tab wanted to bang Petey... did they ever do the dirty? I know Tab had a MAJOR H8-on for Kitty afterwards.

Probably, the book was writen by two english men. Pete Wisdom was an older english man and BoomBoom was a late teenage girl.
I forgot Portacio drew 4 issues of X-Force. There's alot of good, short stints on the title.

I thought he was okay... better than Liefield at least.
Capullo would be my #4 and probably Portacio for #5. I LOVE Portacio generally, but he kinda phoned it in on X-Force. :/
Were there any other regular artists on the book? Kinda insane if there were only six artists for a 125+ issue series, I feel like the X-books go through that many regulars in 3 years these days.

Ellis Excalibur rocked and actually had a very "old-meets-new" flavor similar to JFM's X-Force run imo. If the latter was essentially a New Mutants family homecoming, the former was kind of an Uncanny family homecoming.

Man, what was that all about? I saw that and I thought what happened to Jesse and why is there an X on his head? I just couldn't get what they were trying to do. Sam has lead X-force against Magneto, SHIELD, Prof X and a good many others but Pete Wisdom shows up and all of a sudden he can't lead? That was just an excuse to put Wisdom in a book.

I was thinking the same thing about Shatterstar. i don't think he ever appeared heavily in any other stories. He would fit well into this one. Perhaps flesh him out a bit so he won't just be a killer who doesn't ask questions. Strangely he was also one of my favorite X-Force members.
Strange to see this thread. X-Force was the book that brought me into comics and I still love it. I never got a chance to finish up X-Statix but maybe I will one day. I think Pollina would do well on the new X-Force or Cable. He had an excellent run on the original. Did he do anything after that? I don't recall. If they won't give him an ongoing they should at least tap him for an X-Mini for WOKs.

Awesome cover
Greg Capullo rocked my socks during his run on X-Force! Was so sad when he left, but then happy because I also love Tony S. Daniel!!
PS. I still miss Gaveedra 7 (changed my avatar to show him some respect :p)

What i always loved about X-Force was that they were a totaly seperate thing from the X-men. They went their own way and didn't care about gaing the aproval of the X-men anymore. I agree that issue 19 and the confrontation between Cannonbal and Xavier was one of the best ever. Sammy had the balls to tell Xavier off at and age when Cyclops was still worshiping the man. I truly hated it when they started being more tied to the X-Men again, and Sams "graduation" to the big team. that was the stupidest move ever.
I hated COunter X and thought it was some of the worst crap ellis ever stuck his name on. You could tell that that whole thing was nothing but a paycheck for him and he put in as little effort as possible into it. I mean 2 of the titles outright were ended and the third given a total revamp that had nothing at all to do with what came before.
I know X-Force/X-Statix has a very vocal fan base, but I just could nto muster nay interest in that book at all. I think it probably comes form my outright utter dislike of Alreds art.

I didn't like the Counter-X or Statix move either. They should have used a different team and different book for those concepts and really seen where this book could have gone. Who knows, maybe that X-Force team would have morphed into the current version. I doubt it but we never got the chance to see how this team would have matured. It could have been the best X-team ever.

I don't think that she joined. As a matter of fact I don't think she made any appearance in X-Force. Not unless it was during Counter-X.

She never "joined." She hung out with them for awhile when they were based in Arizona. I think it was only a couple of issues.

What did you think of Jim Cheung's run as artist? I though he started pretty strong. The later issues seemed to suffer a bit. Considering his work after he left X-Force at CrossGen was fantastic, I think it may be have been because of time restraints. The characters did seem to look younger as his run progressed.

I definitely agree. Greg Capullo also had a very nice run on the series. I haven't really kept up with his work, but i don't think his current work is anywhere near as good as his work on X-Force. At least style wise.

Yeah, I saw some of his later work on Spawn and it was just too dark. Capullo was a very good change from Liefeld imo. He did great on X-Force's part in Fatal Attraction. I liked how he drew Sam and Cable.
