Yeays!
I love this manga. It's not the most complex out there, but it is damn entertaining.
Love the developments in the latest chapters. Finally Renka gets some screentime.

Yeah, I thought Akisame's battle with Alexander was intense, and I think this is the first time we've seen Masters pushed to their limits. I'd also like to add that Chikage is a creepy little loli prodigy. I hope we get to see her and Renka Ma fight soon.

Eh, I'm not too sure about Shigure. I think she sees him as a younger brother. I'm wondering when Miu's finally going to explode from all her jealousy and make out with Kenichi in front of their school to express to the world that he belongs to her.

The true battle for Chikage will be between her and Honoka in a game of Othello!

It's definately more little brother than anything else.
As for Miu explonding with jealousy. Possibly when Kenichi gets caught in the combined marshmellow hell of Renka's and Rachel's combined... assests.

It's a shame two hot girls will have to die in order to catalyze Miu's feelings, but love has its sacrifices.
Speaking of love, I'm still kinda stunned over the much hinted at UkitaxKisara coupling that's developing in the manga.

Kenichi himself for me.
Now, while I love the manga to pieces, I'm somewhat bothered by how slowly they're developing some parts. The Kenichi-Miu relationship comes to mind, of course (and seriously, some of Kenichi's attitude in that regard kinda bothers me), as does the Ukita-Kisara thing (and Ukita? Get better training. Seriously.), but there's also Nijima. It's been indicated on more than one occasion that he could turn into something more noble, so to speak, but that seems to have been put on hold for the sake of comedy...

Honestly, I don't think Kenichi and Miu are going to profess anything until it comes the time to face off against Saiga. The gradual process of Ukita/Kisara is reasonable since they've only become aware of their own feelings since the D-of-D tournament saga. As for Niijima, he's better off as an evil conspirator with a bizarre concept of friendship. I'm definitely with you on Ukita though. Hopefully, he'll find a master of his own 'cause I don't want to see him reduced to Krillin status.

ukita is too good to be the krillin.I hope that you're right. But I hope that he doesn't find a master ala Takeda. It would be too much of a repeat. Some special training should be good for him though. Anything that puts him at least at Kisara's level.
As for Niijima. When you're two best friends refer to you a demonic overlord/evil alien it's going to take awhile for you to become truly noble.

To me, what really drove home the point that Nijima wasn't a one-dimensional selfish jerkass was the "testament" he sent Kenichi toward the end of the Ragnarok arc. The fact that, when he thought he was really going to die, his response was to explain himself to Kenichi and try to keep his plan (and not a bad plan!) alive...That added depth (and also, explained the motivation for some of his earlier actions). That's why I'm hoping to see more of that.
It's also occurred to me that Nijima is like a reverse Smug Snake: He comes across as a pathetic, annoying guy most of the time (and seems to have little regard for anyone's dignity, including his own)...then he surprises you by pulling magnificent moves.

Yeah, His status as the leader has been obvious for awhile; besides there's no way the Yami would follow someone weaker than themselves. I also wonder if Kenichi or Hayato will be the ones to take him in the end. If I'm right, especially considering he's Hayato's son, he's most likely the second most powerful character in the series next to Hayato(meaning he's possibly above Ryozanpaku Dojo and just under the Elder's level).
I don't know if he's the leader. But I think it's been established that he is a pretty gigantic asswipe.
Yeah, I'd really to know the circumstances that prompted him to murder his own wife. Whatever the case, I just want to see Kenichi go apeshit on him, even if it would ultimately be a foolish and useless endeavor.

To be honest, one of the things that bother me about HSDK is its approach to romance, especially where Miu is concerned. Both Kenichi and Shou have this weird obsession with "protecting" her...Hell, before the Yomi arc, she sure as heck didn't look like she needed protection! And between Kenichi's refusal (for, what, a year now?) to tell her he loves her, and his moving into the dojo just to be under the same roof as her...I'm not going to call him a stalker, but I can't say I'm really comfortable with some of it. He's a generally awesome guy, but when it comes to Miu...

Awesome, awesome manga, I am a huge fan of this series. It's actually inspired me to train more.
Apachai makes me laugh every damn time, but I can't really say I have a favourite character. HSDK is just one of those cool mangas where most of the characters, heroes and villians, are likable.
On Miu's and Kenichi's relationship... well, come on folks, it's a manga, the romances in them move slow as molasses till the end, frustrating but that's the name of the game.
What I personally find frustrating, and possibly the only negative point in the manga, is Kenichi's unchanging cowardice. I don't know, it's probably just me with my crazy background, but one would think that a person who has grown that strong would actually crave some test of his skill. That's why I'm looking forward to the chapters where he spars with either Takeda or Natsu-chan[lol].
Oh, a bit of trivia, the short form of Alexander in Russian isn't Alex, it's Sasha.

But that's what makes Kenichi unique amongst the league of teen anime protagonist. Whenever a teenage hero in anime gains a significant measure of power, it's always "I have to fight stronger and stronger adversaries for so and such reason" whereas Kenichi, despite becoming an accomplished martial artist, is essentially a normal teenager(as normal as he can get) and rather practical. He's inherently a kind pacifist by nature, and is the type who doesn't use violence unless the situation calls for it (whether it's training or a fight for his life). That, and I don't think he's comfortable with the idea of fighting those he considers his friends. But, in any case, that situation is going to change.

One thing that has had me wondering ever since I started reading the manga is...
...how realistic are the techniques?
I'm not talking about the insane crap the masters pull. That stuff is typical "martial arts make you superhuman" anime fare. But the techniques Kenichi and (most of) his foes use seem...well, they seem like the result of the writer doing his research.

A lot of the techniques Kenichi is taught are perfectly real. He just deploys them with speed and precision that just isn't possible in the real world.

Basically the same thing I was going to say. HSDK martial arts are based on real ones, just done to an impossibly precise and technical level.
Not sure about the sambo though. As a practitioner of it, I can say with some surety that we neither yell our attack names, nor call them anything really. Though it was kind of amusing to see Boris go all nuts with the Russian[some of it gramatically incorrect].

I've been thinking for a while on how to respond to this, because it is a good point... but then it struck me.
That's not realistic at all.
Kenichi, as often portrayed, are not what guys are like, at least not on Earth or anywhere I came from.
A ninety pound weakling scared of getting sent to the hospital is a pacifist.
But a powerhouse like he had become backing out of a good spar, or just some way to show off physical ability?
Christ almighty, that's just not real. Because let's face it, once you learn how to fight, unless you've been castrated, are not human, if you have any masculinity in you whatsoever, you've gotta have some itch to show off your alphamalenes at some frikkin point just for shits and giggles..
Jesus, I remember learning my first karate punches and kicks, everything that moved was a practice target for the next four weeks, and I was a seven year old with a poorly functioning left leg.
Anyways, that was my rant, please don't take it too seriously anyone. Because it still doesn't change the fact that I love the frikkin shit out of HSDK and Kenichi as a character.

They are to an extent.
A lot of the techniques Kenichi is taught are perfectly real. He just deploys them with speed and precision that just isn't possible in the real world.
Yeah, I figure that in the real world, someone who can kick like early Kisara (or block the punches of a semi-pro boxer with her feet) or early Hermit would be world-class...
I've been thinking for a while on how to respond to this, because it is a good point... but then it struck me.
That's not realistic at all.

There's certainly some truth to that (I can tell, having recently started training in karate...And I still remember the one time I used a judo throw in real life)...but given what Kenichi is put through for the sake of his training, I suppose he's scared, even against foes he knows he could curbstomp.

It's gonna be close, that's for sure. He canceled out Kenichi's Seikuken before he could implement it and he can use Mubyoshi (or at least a punch similar to it). That's two of his best techs down the drain. So all he has left is his infamous endurance(which will probably become the ultimate deciding factor) and Saikyo combos 1-4 to help him through. Of course R.Seikuken's precog may also give him an edge.

Uh, Nik? This isn't new. His crush on Miu hasn't been a secret since the Ragnarok arc and he confessed to Shou that he liked Miu the first time they fought.
Besides, look at Kenichi. Miu's a given, then there's Yumi, Renka(though there's a minute possibility her attentions may shift to Takeda), SPARK, and Rachel. It's a two-way street here.

I find that equally annoying, it's just that all said crushes occured before this thread existed as far as I can recall. I'd be happy if Kenichi fancied Miu and had the unrequited affections of that gardening chick at his school eventually leading him to choose between the two.
That'd be interesting. Would he choose the smooth, elegent, perfect, martial artist prodigy he has come to know and love or would he choose the awkward, normal, somewhat cowardly, plant-lover that is oh-so similar to him at the beginning of this story?
Renka, Spark, Rachel, the rest of them are all annoyingly pointless in the grand scheme of things.

This is a typical shounen. There will never be a choice. It will end without any romance what-so-ever. Look at Hajime no Ippo, almost 900 chapters and still no romance even though it is heavily implied.
Also, Miu would win any battle for Kenichi dead to rights. Kenichi's entire reason for getting stronger is to protect Miu.

You what?
The development of Kumi and Ippo's relationship, while intensely slow has been much better handled than Miu and Kenichi's. There are still mitigating reasons why they haven't hooked up yet; every attempt they've made has been interupted by one thing or another and there's the whole issue with Ryo hating Ippo.
Considering there is nothing impeding either Kenichi or Miu from asking the other out and they've been through much more emotional stress that would cause them to become closer but neither does anything.
For a further point, Ippo and Kumi's relationship is not central to the plot, boxing is. Whereas Miu and Kenichi's relationship is the primary drive for Kenichi to want to become strong at all and one of the central premises of the piece.

I cannot agree. Kumi and Ippo have known each other for years now. In story they are like 22 now. What stops them is that Ippo doesn't have the balls, Kumi has thrown him enough hints and he's a grown man. Ippo is the next 40 year old virgin.
Kenichi/Miu have only progressed 1 year in story time and are 15(?) It is a given that Kenichi will be with Miu, but it is still typical shounen nonsense. We will probably never see Kenichi with Miu, but it will always be heavily implied.

Not so. Granted Ippo is very nervous of women, being quite emotionally stunted in his way, but both have tried to make progress on their relationship. Ippo's tried on multiple occasions to tell her that he loves her.
Also that still doesn't change the fact that Ippo's personal relationships are not the main drive of the manga, his boxing career is.
Kenichi/Miu have only progressed 1 year in story time and are 15(?) It is a given that Kenichi will be with Miu, but it is still typical shounen nonsense. We will probably never see Kenichi with Miu, but it will always be heavily implied.
I just don't see any reason for them not to have even confronted the issue since it's blatantly obvious how Kenichi feels and it's even more obvious that Miu gets jealous everytime Renka (Or whichever random martial arts orientated female it happens to be) shows overt interest in him.
There's been no reason for them not have confronted the issue by now and Kenichi's relationship with Miu is one of the central themes of the manga. If Miu was less obviously interested then the relationship moving this slowly would make sense but since they both obviously care for each other a huge amount and are together every day I see no real reason why this subject hasn't come up yet.
I feel that the progression of relationships in Hajime no Ippo has been handled much better than those in HSDK. Though that is not to say that HnI is an example of stellar relationship writing, it's good and fun but ultimately secondary to the main boxing action so it isn't as good as say; Love Hina.

It is a standard in shounen for relationships to be stagnant even though they blatantly obvious, probably one of the reasons I like Air Gear so much is that it breaks down a lot of those archetypes.
i.e. Male lead with no talent/confidence and has some sort of fear that has to do with women or delinquents, women suck men rock(at least it's getting less and less in the manga world now, just don't tell that to Bleach/Naruto) There's a lot more, but this is about HSDK/HnI.

Yup, that's what I love about Kenichi. Unlike most shounen manga, His rivals never fall behind him in skill or power. Damn, I still can't believe that Takeda can use Ryuusei Seikuuken(or at least a close variation). Hopefully, Kenichi's greater experience with the tech will give him the edge he needs to win.
Y'know, if this becomes pattern where Kenichi fights his old adversaries-turned-friends with their improved fighting techniques, I have to say that the hypothetical Hermit vs Kenichi rematch is going to be sick.

Seikuken isn't Kenichi's technique though. All high level Sei users with a master class trainer should be able to use it.

Neat little chapter. Seems like there was a little bit of colum A and colum B in what Takeda said to Kenichi during the fight.
So, is Rachel supposed to go after Kenichi or Miu? Either way, she'll probably bring her brother.

Personally, I see it as a good job aon the author's part to not make the manga too Kenichi/Miu centric. Overfocus on the main character is one thing that HSDK seems to avoid for the most part.

Kenichi alone now apparently rates 0.0001%, or one one-millionth, of Hayato's power. this is half as much as Hayato used when Kenichi and Miu fought him together in the D of D, and that level (0.0002%, or 1/500,000th) was frankly way too much for them. so it looks like Kenichi has probably improved a great deal since the D of D, though he still has a long long long long long way to go.

This chapter marks the beginning of what looks to be a fairly interesting story arc. We've got a lot of power players running around here as well as the Hermit problem to resolve.

That kukri wielding girl (who for some reason, looks vaguely like Rukia to me) is keeping her busy. As such, Sakaki may gain some speedfeats in the next chapter, if he can deal with the Man of Tsubanari effectively.

That kukri wielding girl (who for some reason, looks vaguely like Rukia to me) is keeping her busy. So? Why can't she just redirect the fight so that she joins Sakaki, making it five against two? Why should Sakaki get all the main action while Shigure is stuck with one measly and nameless opponent?
I just cached up with current chapter. Pretty cool manga
Man I wonder what Hermit is planing it seems weird that he joined Yomi and I doubt he did it just for kicks.
I hope this sword arc won't side-track him for another three dozens of chapters because this manga needs more Hermit. Every time he shows up badass'ery of the manga doubles  .
Though there are two things that bother me sligthly:
-Hayato mentioned that there is one more Ryozanpaku master who wasn't revealed. I wonder who he is and when will he show up. Also what style does he uses ( my bet - Aikido)
-Yūka you know the flower girl, what's the point of her in this manga anyway?
She isn't funny or badass, she doesn't add anything to the storyline, doesn't say or do anything meaningful and anyone who's sane enough to form a coherent sentence and even skimmed through this manga knows that Kenichi will always choose Miu in a heartbeat so she isn't there to add any sort of "romantic tension" or anything like that.
Hell she doesn't even add any bloody fanservice (which this series is overflowing with) and compared to like all the other girls in this manga isn't even noticeable. Unless there is someone who has a thing for dorky looking girls in glasses. Which I guess exists, but come on that can't be a lar, profitabe demografic!
By the way i'ts not like I hate the girl (how could I? Se doesn't leave any lasting impression, good or bad) it's just that she's such a pointless character that's it's a waist of perfectly good paper to even draw her. It's not like it grows on trees or something...

Okaaaaaay It does... in a way. But that's all the more reason not to waist it like that. Trees have rigth to live too you know... Let's not cut more than we need to.

Japan. That's the only reason.

I do believe Shigure just got even more awesome than she was before.

I do like the way Shigure's speed is represented.
It does suggest her as being on a different level to the other masters. (Except Hayato obviously)
Also a nice direction for the story with a technical heel/face turn.

A good chapter. We continue with the one on one battles instead of just having Shigure take on one and Sakaki beat up everybody else. Good fights.
I'm really beginning to dig Sai Kagerou when he's like this. He's funny and interesting.

New chapter is out and the rest of the Ryozanpaku masters have shown up. The next chapter should be awesome.

Holy shit, Mikumo's an absolute beast. If she was serious about fighting Sakaki and Shigure, I don't think they could've stood a chance against her.

Yeay! I got a sample of the Shigure/Mikumo fight I've been wanting to see for awhile now.
Hopefully they'll be able to got at it more seriously later on.

She strikes me as the most powerful Yomi master so far, the only one I can see as possibly more powerful within Yomi is Miu's father. When I saw her fight the Chinese master earlier I thought her technique was illusions based but now I see it's pure speed.......nice, I was looking forward to a speed based fighter!
Now I'm gonna but her against Batgirl!

Indeed, but I knew she would be sweet form the moment I saw her, I love how broken her speed was she'll probably be the second strongest next to Miu's Father. It wouldn't surprise me if Miu's Father and Grandfather had an epic battle!

Oh yeah I knew she was gonna be a kickass fighter. I figure some kind of confrontation between Miu's father and grandfather is a given. I hope they have an epic fight.
I really want to see some of the other Yami members in action.
