"Camelot Falls" paperbacks 1-2 or "For Tomorrow" paperbacks 1-2? Which is the better gift for my bro?

He recently got into Superman. Wanted to get him a good story in continuity that wouldn't suck and turn him off of reading any more stories. Are they both good? Is one better?

"All Star Superman" - he already read.
"Up, Up, And Away" - he already read.
"Kingdom Come" - he already read.
"Death of, World Without, and Return of Superman" - getting it for Christmas.
"Birthright" - getting it for Christmas.

I haven't read these stories though, so your thoughts on these? Other recommended reads for Superman?

Camelot Falls is the better story IMO. Busiek nailed the character's personalities perfectly plus Pacheco's art was fantastic. This story will read great in trade format.

For Tomorrow had beautiful Jim Lee art but Brian Azz took what should have been a 6 part story arc & stretched it out into 12 issues. Some parts of the story I was bored.

Camelot Falls volume 1&2 hands down.

For tommorow has beautiful jim lee art, but by god the story is depressing as hell, The funny thing is, brian azzerelo doesn;t really like superheroes, and it's pretty evident to me why, he doesn't get the fun aspect of them at all.

other superman stories of interest:

Why does it have to be in continuity?

I can't vouch for either really. Guess Camelot Falls because it has Pacheco art but both stories are kind of boring. That Last Son story was okay.

I liked "For Tomorrow", but it's a pretty atypical Superman story, and definitely might turn off a new reader. "Camelot Falls" is a much safer choice.

Of the two, I'd pick Camelot Falls. I'm not a fan of either one, but at least Camelot Falls isn't confusing.

I don't think Camelot Falls is an all-time classic, but if I had to choose between that and the dreary For Tomorrow, then it's Camelot all the way.

Triple ditto.

For Tomorrow is terribly boring.

I definitely agree. I don't absolutely hate For Tomorrow, but I'd definitely recommend it to a longtime Superman fan looking for something different before I recommended it to someone just getting into Supes.

I can't recommend either one, especially "Camelot Returns" considering it amounts to a year long set up for more stores and resolves nothing. At least "For Tomorrow" ends, though it makes very little sense. Both are very pretty, though. I'd recommend dropping Birthright as well and picking up any of these:

All Star Superman Vol 1 (2 comes out in Feb.)
Superman & The Legion of Superheroes
For All Seasons (seriously this one)
Kryptonite aka Superman Confidential Book 1
Our Worlds At War Omnibus
Emperor Joker
Endgame
No Limits
President Lex
Return To Krypton

Also, any of the trades of JLA when Grant Morrison was writing. He loves Superman and it shows. And also World's Finest from Gibbons & Rude.

Our Worlds At War Omnibus

waitaminute, you can't recommend camelot falls, but you can recommend emperor joker? That is one big turd!

Camelot falls is fantastic, Okay, All the plot threads might not have been followed up on straight away, but he followed up in them in the Third Kyrptonian arc and the insect queen arc, and the Paragon arc which was super cool.

Camelot Falls is better in both story and art (though I actually quite liked the story in For Tomorrow)

I have both stories, I guess, I just found for Tomorrow to be really dreary and made me fell sad, which is not what i want from superman story. I have to admit James robinson is settling into the superman books like a house on fire, he is doing some great issues, I have enjoyed his issues the most so far from the current storyline, his two gaurdian specials were awesome.

Would "neither" be an acceptable answer?

For Tomorrow was dreadful (beautiful art though) and I can't say I was a big fan of Camelot Falls.

I'd recommend any Geoff Johns collection, though...

Emperor Joker is obviously not your typical Superman story but that's what makes it such a great read. The Joker becomes omnipotent, remakes the entire world and the only person standing against him is Superman, because he horrifically takes out Batman first rather than toy with him, though Batman is ultimately the key to The Joker's defeat.

No, no and no. Camelot Falls was much ado about nothing except to get Busiek a chance to do his own version of The X Men's "Days of Future Past." Except at least they had bad guys to fight. Superman is just fighting Arion, who's just being a jerk of a good guy. Subjekt 17 is a total victim. The only real bad guy is...The Prankster. Yeah, that's as bad as it gets. And the end is...the real bad guy, Kyber, wakes up for a future story. A story which will most likely never happen since Busiek is off the book. A year of my life for nothing but pretty art. The Third Kryptonian and Insect Queen had little to nothing to do with Camelot Falls. For Tomorrow was bad, but at least it had a beginning middle and definite end. Too bad the main conceit of the story is that Superman has gone insane...again. But again, pretty art.

Camelot Falls is a letdown (I'm disappointed that it still came down to Superman vs. Arion, in the end), and I can barely remember For Tomorrow.

What about Kingdom Come? That counts as a Superman story, right?

Kingdom come is a DCU story, an elseworlds, a complete classic, Lots of the Threads and ideas have been used to great effect by Geogg johns recenty in the JSA title, but it woudn't be fair to say its's a superman story. lots of other DC characters have great and cool moments in this story.

Paul dini's superman special that won the eisner is pretty good, and it;s huge in size as well, it's like a big newspaper!

Like others have said For Tomorrow's art is fantastic, the story not so much.
Camelot Falls story was good, art is pretty good in some parts.
I like Birthright, its a fun read.
Death, World w/o, and Return is an awesome story. This is what got me into comics. This is favorite comic book story ever.

I'd also recommend:
Byrne's Man of Steel
Superman Batman Vol 1 and 2

I don't know... the book is everything you said, but at its' core, KC really is about the built-in ideals that Superman represents and how they contrast with the other heroes of the world. It was literally old guard versus new, with Supes as the loudest voice. It made me appreciate Superman on a different level...

Both stories are great, IMO. Although I must admit that I have a soft spot for For Tomorrow. However, "Absolute For Tomorrow" comes out in march next year, so I guess Camelot Falls is the better option between the two at this moment.

Everyone differs on this...but GREAT gifts for Superman followers is:

Superman: For All Seasons by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (Very enjoyable and heart warming!)

Superman: Brainiac by Geoff Johns (Amazing! Not currently in a graphic novel format but you can find the issues online and in stores now.)

Superman: Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek (Very enjoyable out-of-continuity read)

Superman: Last Son by Geoff Johns and Richard Donner!

Forget both of them and get him Superman: Secret Identity and one of Geoff Johns' Superman collections (Last Son or the Legion one).

I like For Tomorrow solely for the incredible Jim Lee art. It really was awesome, and totally wasted on that story. Ah well.

get trades of Geoff Johns' run. Last Son, Escape from Bizarro World, and the Brainiac story

also consider "The Man of Steel" trades by John Byrne. classic 80's comics there

I've only recently gotten into Superman myself - comics for over a decade, but only just starting to dig Superman - and I'd recommend 'Superman: Back In Action' (http://dccomics.com/dcu/graphic_novels/?gn=6420).
I believe it comes after Up, Up And Away - which I haven't read - and it's set soon after his return from 'one year later'.
Written by Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza, with great art by Peter Woods, it's the one that kicked me off on my current Superman love* - the stories got a cameos by other heroes by the truckload, and Superman teaming up with a bunch of D-listers to try and save the world.
Good story, great and art and a few laughs - that don't distract from the story - it's a good read.
As the stories only three issues though, it's got some stories from the seventies at the back, and they are pretty good reads in their own right.

Also, Superman: Last Son (http://dccomics.com/dcu/graphic_novels/?gn=9180) is pretty good - so far.
Just got it yesterday, and haven't finished it yet, but the set ups really cool... and it's got a 3-D section, with 3-D glasses.
(Which I guess could be a turn on if he's younger, or a turn off if he hates 3D).

*It was probably All Star Superman that got me keen on Superman, but Back In Action that made me interested in checking him out in the DCU books.
