My friend, Jrnewto, and I were wondering about the incredible similarities between Illyana Rasputin, Magik, and Nightcrawler and Amanda Sefton.

Think about it, Nightcrawler teleports. Illyana teleports.
Amanda Sefton is a sorceress, and into magic. Illyana is also a sorceress, and into magic.
Illyana is from a family of brunettes.....yet she is the only blonde in the Rasputin family. Anyone ever find that odd? Amanda Sefton is blonde!

Amanda Sefton took the mantle of Magik, also. This seems like a strange coincidence. Is there more of a relationship between Magik, Nightcrawler and Amanda Sefton than we've ever known??

I pray to God there isn't. Sometimes, a coincidence doesn't have to be anything but a coincidence.

No.

The blonde gene is rather common. It's also recessive so many many many dark haired parents have blonde children, so it's not odd that she's the only blonde Rasputin.

Also, Kurt and Illyana's powers are not at all similar. There's as much of a connection between Rachel's powers and Illyana's as there is between her and Kurt.

What's more disturbing is that Nightcrawler is related to Amanda Sefton.

As does/did Amelia Voght, Exodus, Blink, Legion, Slipstream, Doorman, Lourdes Chantel, Locus, Darkstar, Lila Cheney, Gateway, Siena Blaze, Vanisher, Cloak, Hub, and others.
Amanda Sefton is a sorceress, and into magic. Illyana is also a sorceress, and into magic.
Anyone can learn and use magic. Margali taught Amanda. Belasco and AUStorm taught Illyana.

No. Brunettes have blonde children quite often. Just like brown-eyed people have blue-eyed children. Recessive genetic traits are just as inheritable, even if they're masked by dominant ones.

So what unbelievable similarities were you talking about?

No blood. No problem.

I generally don't like it when ostensibly "simple" backgrounds are suddenly made more complicated by linking the character to some other super-character, or making the background just "wilder." I mean, what was the point in making Peter Parker's parents CIA agents? Why couldn't they just leave them dull and normal to fit in with the other "everyman" aspect of Spidey's civilian life?

No blood. No problem.

Siblings are siblings. relations are relations, blood doesn't make the relations stronger (One could actually argue that it's weaker). Adoptive relationships are just as valid and binding as those that come from blood.

But I am totally biased. and never wrong.

Does Nightcrawler still go through Limbo to teleport or did i make that up?

You made it up.

Originally it was intended to be the dark dimension then AoA implied it was the astral plane and then Chuck Austen 'revealed' that Kurt used Azazel's dimension to teleport. There is, however, an issue of authenticity with that since Slott has opened the door to some of Austen's stuff being just 'Earth A' it becomes difficult to ascertain as to just how much of the run is in-continuity. Since I hate the Draco, I'm sticking with the assumption that it's Earth A.

Reality does not bear this out, legally, psychologically, or emotionally.

And Kurt was never technically/legally adopted by the Szardoses.

But the magic power of "blood" is what makes the incest taboo function? There are plenty of cases of incest between biological relations. That being the case, I'm not sure what your "legally, psychologically, or emotionally" is supposed to be referring to especially since what holds legally, psychologically and emotionally in terms of incest is equally binding in the case of "a mere legal relationship." If someone raises you as their child, you are going to view them the same way as you would a biological parent. If someone is raised as your sibling, then you are going to perceive them as a sibling. CC's story isn't saved by the "out" of it being a foster relationship -- it's intentionally creepy because of that relationship. Now stop arguing with your betters.

They are not related yet Give it enough time and some writer will come with shocking revelations that will shake the X-men to their core and change the X-books forever

I don't believe there is an actual relationship between the three; not in the way you're suggesting, David R. Obviously, one does exist between Kurt and Amanda (as foster siblings first, then romantic partners later), but I think that is separate from any connection to Illyana.

Unlike Illyana, Amanda Sefton comes from a mystic heritage: Her mother, Margali Szardos, served as custodian of the Winding Way, and it has been established that Amanda's family is intrinsically tied to magic (her brother, Stefan, was also well-versed in sorcery). Illyana, on the other hand, had no familial ties to the magickal arts (unless you count that Colossus mini-series a few years ago that revealed some relationship to Rasputin, former Czar of Russia, and said that his descendants would be cursed to suffer) but it was implied that she had an innate affinity to Limbo, which is perhaps why Belasco abducted her all those years ago and made her his apprentice.

Additionally, Amanda adopted the mantle of Magik primarily to confuse Belasco during the events of X-Men: Black Sun. Because names have power, Amanda sought to protect herself from Belasco's spells by calling herself 'Magik', thinking Belasco would be convinced his former apprentice, Illyana, was alive and well, and intent on destroying Illyana and not Amanda. As Limbo was without a guardian (with Illyana long gone and Belasco and Margali removed from the playing field), Amanda was the only remaining candidate suited for the job.

Moreover, the fact that Illyana and Kurt are both teleporters is incidental. Illyana teleports via stepping discs and uses Limbo as a waystation, and Kurt teleports via 'jumps' that leave behind a stench of brimstone, traveling instantaneously between this dimension and another before arriving at his destination.

The only connection I see between Illyana and Amanda is the Soulsword, really. As revealed in Excalibur Minus 1, Margali persuaded Amanda to stay in their gypsy camp in Germany by showing her an image of her "destiny" (as Margali put it), the Soulsword, years before Amanda claimed it for herself. Margali explained that Amanda needed to stay and learn the ways of magick so that she could one day wield the Soulsword against foes like Belasco (who, it was also revealed in that issue, knows Margali quite well).

Of course, years later, Margali would trick Amanda into procuring the Soulsword for her from Kitty Pryde, the blade's guardian following "Inferno," so that she could amass more power from the Winding Way, but that's neither here nor there...

No blood. No problem.

As an adoptee, I have to say "problem." I only have female cousins, no sisters, but man, that shit would still be creepy.

To give Spidey an excuse to fight the Red Skull in an annual.
