I remember getting a Rogue action figure back in the day as a kid that was bi-lingual -- but FRENCH/English (Canadian crossover, I'm sure). But very little is in Spanish there, and it is still a "big city" as far as the State is concerned.

It's all relative. Most people do not speak Spanish. Maybe next generation it'll be different, but I think it will take two generations before Spanish takes a solid foothold in America.

I do know a tiny bit of Thai, actually. As well as a little Japanese (but not that alphabet ... it's beyond me), a tiny bit of Shanghainese, some French, some Dutch, a tiny bit of German and a tiny bit of Arabic. Lots of the younger kids in my family speak Indonesian as well but near fluently.

And the assumption was based on the fact that Spanish majors in my uni are allowed to go on funded exchange to Miami, so there must be a high saturation of bi-lingual persons there at least.

lol, we studied this topic in first year. Language as a form of resistance, exclusion and preservation amongst the hegemony. It links into how various subcultures all have some standard of 'authenticity' in order to fashion an independent identity etc.

We have lots of different areas in Australia like that - there are whole segments of the city where the demographic shifts to the Lebanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Chinese or Indians. The 'white' European identities are much more fluid, since they're older families and the younger ones 'pass'. The next generation of immigrants looks to be from Africa but, interestingly, in this case there doesn't seem to be a formation of community in the more mainstream sense but more of refuge.

It would have four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, two living rooms, and a study. I want the pretty kitchen with cherry wood cabinets and granite counter tops. I want beautiful furniture. One living area would be designed in the pre-French Revolution style and the other one would have a more modern theme. I want a huge backyard and a pretty front yard with a beautiful garden.

So I need to start saving my money. I need to keep my credit excellent and I need to find my husband and marry him before I get out of law school so we can start saving for this house and the type of decorations I want. Screw the small brick house and the white picket fence!!
