View Full Version : Wonder Womanīs magic weapons

Just came from Rumbles where I had an interesting debate with Pendaran.
Following it, Iīd like to talk a bit about Dianaīs weapons, namely her sword and tiara:
Given that theyīre alledgedly magical artifacts, when Diana slashes something with her sword or tiara, would you qualify it as a physical attack or a magical attack?
It was never clarified whether magic is what does the cutting or if magic is just a component of its manufacturing process (like metalurgy).
Iīve always prefered and defended the 2nd but one could build a case for both.
I think that these weapons are unusualy sharp and hard because of the magical/metalurgical processes that were used in their manufacture.
But when they strike, itīs still the good old-fashioned atom-on-atom clashing at work.
Itīs a bit like the human body.
Our inner processes are electrochemical and we could be describbed as electrochemical beings.
But when we punch something, that punch is not an electrical or a chemical attack, itīs just a good old fashioned mechanical collision.
Am I wrong or just horribly wrong?

I don't consider those things magical, because they were created by Gods. To me, the Gods of the DCU are not "magical," but more like uber-powerful metahumans. So the rules of their biology/environment/tools/etc all have an internal "science," just like ours do. The science of it is just beyond most humans' understanding. But we do know that there IS some kind of solvable science/logic in their existence, because Dr. Poison once used the DNA of a demi-goddess to create the Pandora Virus.
Magic, on the other hand, doesn't really need to make sense or be explainable. That's why it's magic.

During Kingdom Come, Superman casually touches the tip of Hephaestus' sword--y'know, the one Diana typically appeared with after KC. His finger was bleeding from a cut. When Diana notices this, she says it was forged by Hephaestus and capable of cutting atoms. I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything in Rumbler Logic, but that sounds pretty magical to me.

I'd imagine they can affect items usually immune to non-magical weapons and might affect other magically charged items...

The sword at least is magical. It cut the crap out of Superman life a hot knife through butter. And if the sword is magical then so is the other stuff.
Darn.
I was hoping this was a thread about the "bOObs of steel"

What does Power Girl have to do with a Wonder Woman thread?

why would the sword have to be magical to cut Superman? Doomsday killed him by punching him to death, so he's not impervious to physical harm. i see no reason why Hephaestus (the god of technology and blacksmiths) couldn't make a blade with a monomolecular edge - out of, say, crystalline diatomic hydrogen?

Man, I hate the sword. Yes, I know I'm in the minority, but I hate that thing.

If her sword was created by magic, it should be able to cut through anything short of armour with magical properties.

Wouldn't it depend on how magical various things are? Like... the one with stronger magic "wins"?

I'd say so.

I'm with you on that one. Diana carrying a sword makes about as much sense as Superman carrying an Uzi.

Haven't some of her best battles been sword battles? Usually the ones where she goes all mythological and fights monsters. Diana carrying a sword makes perfect sense in that context.

i'm guessing you're not a fan of Superman At Earth's End.

Looks like he got all his DVD connections tangled up while trying to connect them to his TV...

Let's not forget Wonder Woman's earrings ... they give her the power of magnetic hearing so that she can talk to Queen Desira! AND they also double as a pair of self-renewing oxygen chambers!
