Yep , Its been far too long since we had a thread where we could talk about our "Back Issue hunting" stories.Or what key Back Issues we scored?
So as usual I'll start my Back Issue hunting journey and It concerns my hunt to get Uncanny X-Men Issues for cheap!Recently I landed a pretty good haul slowly.Heres a list of my Issues I had...and the ones added In bold.
Uncanny X-Men: 142,144,148,153,173,180-181,184-185,203,210,223-240,243,244,245-247249-250,251-252,253-255,256-258 ,259-265,269-276,280-282,283-284, 286-290,291, 292-294,296,297-309,310-313,316,318-319,320,321,322-current!
Its my slow building holy grail. This past year , thats the Issues I've found and added that are cheap and easy to afford.I found them all In a shop and I'm still going on this.Odds are I'll snag 194-198 (a little worn),278-279,and 314-315,317 to lock up my run from 300 straight to 450#.
So come on...whats your current back Issue fun? What Issues have you added to a run of DC,Marvel or Indie book?

Well, I dont really do much back issue hunting anymore. There are a couple out of the ordinary titles that I do hunt for. The main one is Weird War. I'm trying to complete the series, with the books in nice condition. It aint easy. I did pick up 2 reacently though, #40 & 93.

My current back issue collecting is mostly Tomahawk (DC comics, 1950-1971) and Johnny Thunder (the western one).
I recently got Tomahawk #103, the Frankenstein cover (it was a Silver Age DC comic after all), completing my run from #81 thru the end of the run (less #123 and #125). I think there's about six of us collecting this on eBay, since i see the same names on the bids all the time.
I have about 30 issues before that sporatically going back to #2. Beautiful covers and nice artwork by Premiani (inked by Burnley!), Cardy, Ray (his earlier nonscratchy stuff is really very nice)and Bob Brown.
Also looking (tho not as hard) for Metal Men, Challengers, Blackhawk and any Golden Age anthology titles i can get my hands on.

I recenty bought the last 2 issues of Danger Trail and an issue of Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt to finish off the series. Now I'm sort of looking for an issue of Knightmare (from AP) and trying to find the issues of Manga Mayhem to finish off the story.
Lone Ranger

I pick up lots of different back issues, but I am focused on completing a few runs:
Lone Ranger
I am trying to complete a run of issues with 'Blue Shirt Painted Covers'. This encompasses issues #37 (when he switched from red to blue shirts) to #111 (the last issue before photo covers took over). That's around 75 issues! They can be tough to track down, but I have about 50 of them now.
Atom
I am nearly finished a run of Atom (& Hawkman) from #1 through #45 (including Showcase #34-#36). I only need 4 more, and I have all of the most expensive issues.
All-American Western
There are 24 issues of this title, which ran from #103 through to #126. It features wonderful Alex Toth drawn Johnny Thunder stories. I have 17 of them, but they are pretty tough to find at a decent price.

I'm done looking for back issues... it's hard to believe, but I have everything I've ever wanted... with the exception of a couple of TPBs I've been meaning to purchase... I miss going to the comic book shops, though... since I get my comic books via the internet/mail... most of the tme, it's cheaper to get back issues through eBay.

I believe I've seen a bunch of "Wierd War" titles In an antique shop In VA.I never really looked over them at the time.I was scannin for some Avengers and Uncanny X-Men and I let It go.
Yesterday I went to a Cards & Comics show at my local Mall. Its there I found a few Back Issues I picked up.
X-Force 56#:I'm a Deadpool manaic!I saw the cover with him and Syrn and picked It up.This Issue continues the storyline where Deadpool went to save Syrn , but Instead found himself locked up.
Its a good Issue and It features the Onslaught preview.
X-Force 1#:It was a number 1# lol.Haven't read It yet.
X-Factor 75#:Saw It with a Mr.Sinister cover. Its a pretty good read.Love how Jamie MadroX fooled one of his Dupes Into thinking he was the real deal.
X-Factor 87#:Bought this because It features a cool Joe Quesada cover.Haven't read yet.
Legionaires 1#, Tales of the Legion Superheroes Annual 4 & 5:With the Legion reboot coming , I decided to look at a Legion past that DC has pretty much wiped out twice!
Superman:Man of Steel 100#:Features a new Fotress of Solitude It says.Haven't read yet.
My back Issue haul was 8 books for 5 bucks.I'm pretty happy with my haul thus far.

i somehow always seem to go backwards in my back issue collection. a lot of the stuff i had as a kid managed to get all wrecked cause when i was young i didn't take good care of my books at all. i think maybe the more older i get i get more anal about the quality of my books so i'm always having to rebuy certain issues.
and it doesn't help that down here in Melbourne, Australia it's sometimes really hard to find good quality back issues. and it's not even obscure stuff either. mainly 80's and 90's spidey titles.

I'm on a New Teen Titans (1st series) quest and can't for the life of me score # 2. It books for $15, yet I see people biding 20 plus for a Vf copy???? Over the last year I've gotten all except 2, 4, and 5.

Sounds familiar. I have a complete collection of New Teen Titans vol. 1, and #2 was the last issue I got. I found it at the San Diego Comicon.
My back issue want list is over six pages long, and those pages are single-spaced with 9-point type! My Holy Grails are Miracleman #11-15 and #23-24, but I've pretty much given up on ever finding those at a price I'm willing to pay. I'm trying to complete my collections of Groo, Starman, Roy Thomas's original run of Conan, Savage Dragon, Usagi Yojimbo, and Nexus, among other series. I also want to get every Don Rosa story that's been published in America. Finally, I've recently become interested in the Shooter/Swan Legion stories from Adventure Comics. I'm looking for #353 (death of Ferro Lad) and #355 (part two of the Adult Legion story) in particular.

I usually find some New Teen Titan Issues In Antique shops but they want 10 to 15 bucks a copy for the 1st few Issues.I have Issue 9# as the earlist New Teen Titans.
I was on a Titans quest to land New Teen Titans 38# or 39#.The Issue where Dick and Wally quit the Team.Where Dick gave up being Robin.I searched and searched for It and I finally landed It.Had to pay 3 bucks , but by this time I was just happy to have the Issue.

I started collecting these a few years ago. I probably have three quarters of the issues from #320-380.
As far as Silver Age books go, they are pretty inexpensive and widely available. If you are happy with a VG copy, I've found that you can get most of them for $3-$5 on eBay.

I was planning on posting this on the Classics board, and probably still will, but here's what I got at the Portland con last week, in more-or-less random order:
Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror #5 - my first of this title.
Blazing Six-Guns #1, featuring the Sundance Kid. Skywald's first color comic, and my first Skywald color comic.
Creatures on the Loose #10 - the first Kull story, by Thomas & Wrightson, backed by a Kirby/Ayers monster story.
Conan #97 - closing in on the first 100 issues.
Blackhawk #199 and #267 - the first one made me laugh out loud - "We've been reduced in size, and are under attack by weird mummy insects!" yeah, the regular mummy insects are bad enough... the other one is my first issue of the Evanier/Spiegle run that I've heard so many good things about.
Jimmy Olsen #134 - Adams cover & Kirby story. Now I have all but 2 of the Kirby issues.
Battlestar Galactica #1 - I remember the show; never saw the comic before.
Tragg & the Sky Gods #1 - a Gold Key oddball from the 70s.
Jungle Twins #1 - ditto.
Blondie Comics Monthly #43 - Harvey Comics, June 1952. This may now be my oldest comic book.
My Love #14 - a Marvel romance comic from 1971, with a cover story that takes place at Woodstock. Hippie romance comics?!?
Captain Carrot & his Amazing Zoo Crew #1 - my first issue of CC ever!
King Conan #1 & #2 - my first KC issues ever!
Kull #29 - now I only need one more for the full run.
Red Sonja #9, #11, #12, #13, #14, and #15 - now I have #1-16!
Untold Origin of Ms. Victory #1 - my first AC comic ever!
The Science Fair Story of Electronics - a Radio Shack promo from Fall 1979!
Roberta Gregory's Naughty Bits #5, #6, #7, #8, and #9 - I'm familiar with her work, but these are my first of this title.
Girl Crazy #1, #2, and #3 - my first by any Hernandez brother!
Superman, Wonder Woman, and the TRS-80 Computer Whiz Kids - another Radio Shack promo!
Captain Guts Comix #3 - I have #1 and #2 - anybody know how many there were?
More Comics from the Pen of Foolbert Sturgeon featuring Jesus Meets the Armed Services - classic underground comix!
Smile #2 - I have #1; again, does anyone know how many there were?
Grateful Dead Comix #3 and #4 - trippy stuff, maaan!
The Spirit #18 - I have the 16 Warren issues; this is my first from the Kitchen Sink run.
1984 #4 - my first issue of this title
And the piece de resistance ... The Collected Omaha the Cat Dancer Volume 1 - my first Omaha ever!

I am always happy with a VG copy... or even worse. At San Diego I even bought a couple of incomplete comics. :) (Though I didn't know they were incomplete when I bought them.)
I think I paid $5 for the first issue of the Adult Legion story. That's at the upper end of what I'm willing to pay for back issues, but it was completely worth it. I don't use eBay, but I expect that if I continue attending conventions, I'll eventually be able to find cheap low-grade copies of many of these issues.

This Is an Issue I got out of an antique shop as a little kid.I harrassed my Mom to buy It for me because It was 5 bucks.I put It away for a long time and found It a few years back as I fixed my Detective comics In order.
Its a pretty good Issue as Its from 1963 and features a story about Batman's widow. Its my oldest comic , I suppose.I don't really have many 1960's type comics.Just a few ....I'll need to go and look at.

Grrr! That happened to me too! I'll probably never know what happened on pages thirteen through seventeen of Charleton Trio # 3, starring Sinestro! Boy Fiend!.
(Still worth the buck I paid for it, though.)

I'm actually at a loose end now....I completed the Legion collection back to Superboy #172, including the solo series and L.E.G.I.O.N., all the Ambush Bug appearances, the Gold Key Wacky Races issues, The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe...I'm thinking of tracking down Secret Society of Super-Villains, but the issues are surprisingly expensive.

Today I hit the Flea Market and besides being a bit cold this morning...I walked away with a Key "Back Issue" find I had searched for and a few other nice gems.
Blackhawk 273#:The final Issue.Good story by the way , but the letters page Mark Evanier had me laughing. "I have personally forced 3 editors off the book and now stand as Editor. Then I decided that Editor Mark Evanier should fire Writer Mark Evanier.Well artist Dan Spiegle called me and said since I fired writer Mark Evanier he was quitting!"
" I decided to hire Carman I. to write and he had started on Issue 274#.DC called me and said they were canceling the book!"
He mentioned something about a Mini-series with Carmen I. that DC would later do.
Hellblazer 100#:Great story by the way!John Constantine nearly dies and goes to Hell again. His dad Is there and the 2 share a discussion about thier dysfunctional family.Plus the shocker at the end....wow.
World Finest 310#Haven't read It yet.
Thor 356#The great cover with Hercules. "Stand aside "Thunder God" , Walter Simonson Is away!" I loved the cover.
And my key find....
Barve & the Bold 200#After 2 years of looking I found It.Brave & the Bold 200# , featuring the 1st appearnace of Batman & the Outsiders!Plus I loved the "Brimestone" story. That was a nice touch with Earth 1# and Earth 2# Batman. :)
I found these at a Flea Market for 5 bucks.I'm a pretty happy man right about now.

Ah, the thrill of the hunt.
I have lots of places to check, 2 Comic shops (owned by same guy), a $1 warehouse, a second comic shop, a third comic shop, half price books, a large flea market (Roger's Sale in OH) and ebay. I stopped going to conventions for personal reasons. But I haven't really had problems tracking down any issues I really really wanted. guess I'm lucky.
I don't have too many back issues that I am really after, most of the stuff I really like I already have. But my main "look for list is"
Justice League # 2 (giffen's)
Miracleman 12, 13, 14, (I doubt I will ever get these due to $$$)
about 20 issues of Books of Magic.
--Sir Tim,
Good luck on your Nexus collection. When i was trying to get all the issues, a particualr issue in the 20's was very very tough to find and the last issue I got, I forget the ish #, but it was 21, 22, 23, or 24. I can't remember, so if you have all those you should have clear sailing.

I don't know about the All-Star, but I know that in that All-American 107, you've got art by Alex Toth, Gil Kane and Joe Kubert. You really can't go wrong there.
I think that Kanigher and Toth's run on the Johnny Thunder strip is one of the all time best.

Cloak and Dagger. I only found two issues so far. I read them as a kid. I have issue 1 Oct 83' and issue 1 July 85'. That's it. I don't think there were too many of them overall.
Crisis on Infinite Earths An excellent series that I've heard a lot about but never got a chance to actually read. I found a bunch of them on Sunday at the show I went to. I have issues 1, 2, 7 and 9 of 1985 and issues 11 and 12 of 1986. I have no idea how long this series went on for.
Teen Titans I just found another one I'm missing in a mini 1 of 4 series where it featured the life story of various Teen Titan characters. I just found issue 1 that features Cyborg. (1982) I'm always looking for Teen Titans stuff that came out in the early to mid 80's. I have issue 2 and 4 in that series that feature the stories of Raven and Starfire. But I'm still missing issue 3. I don't know who's story is left.
I'm always looking for issues that feature Amethyst:Princess of Gemworld, Hawkman issues from the early to mid 80's, and WonderWoman from the early to mid 80's. Scrooge McDuck was another series I started reading in the 80's but those back issues are a fortune now.
I also picked up a bunch of Micheal Turner's original Fathom series single issues that I didn't have. I'll probably post this on the Classic Forum too.
If you have any issues of stuff I've mentioned that I'm missing, PM me!
:)
There was another member on here who was already kind enough to send me a few Hawkman issues I didn't have. Thankyou ChrisCCL.

I finally managed to get my hands on Flash #236, for me this is the holy grail of collecting, i have been trying to get this for 20 years and every show i have ever been to, including San Diego, i couldn't find it.
I went into my local store just to talk to the owner, i have stopped collecting, but he held on to my want list and managed to get this for me, i had to have it.
There is a comic show coming up in a couple of weeks time, so that will put an end to the non-collecting, damm Flash #236.
Will probably try to pick up some more Uncanny X-men, only need 10 or 11
for a full run, i currently have them all from 16-444, plus a couple below that
Also means i will need to get all the things i have nissed for the last 6 or 7 months or so.
I'm also looking to finish of runs of Superman, Action, FF and Avengers.

Hey, no problem dude! Thanks for the info on Crisis of Infinite Earths. I will continue the hunt for the ones I'm missing. I love the cover art on the Crisis series. Really detailed. Excellent covers.
The cool thing about WonderWoman and Hawkman is I can find them in collections now. That's probably what I'll do but I will grab single issues here and there when I can find them. And I found a ton of Amethyst at WizardWorld Chicago all those months ago, but I know I'm still missing some issues with her storyline. And I'm always finding more Teen Titans stuff. Sometimes, the hunt itself is the most fun ya know? I'm enjoying it since it's still newer to me.

You'll enjoy 48-51 a lot.In fact 51# Is a fun Issue to read!

I picked up Detective Comics #655, 656 and Incredible Hulk #315. They might not seem impressive, but they have a story behind them. I had these when I was younger, before all my old comics were damaged. :(
I'm thinking about slowly picking up all the comics in my childhood collection. I had modest runs (10 to 50 issues) of G.I. Joe, Incredible Hulk, Spectacular Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, Web of Spider-Man, and Wolverine. I'm sure I had a few others, but I can't remember right now. The one that still hurts the most was G.I. Joe ... I had issues 1-124.
Also picked up Reggie and Me #29-31. I'm thinking about getting all the Silver Age comics of this title. The task shouldn't be too hard since it's only issues 19-38. I'm already working on some other Silver Age runs, so I'll see how that works out.

I as a kid has Superman (vol2) 12#.The Lori Lemeris origin Issue by John Bryne.I had It as a kid and sadly In a fire I lost them and a bunch of older late 80's Superman Comics.
I would this year find It and thus capture a small part of my youth back!God...feels so good.

I have 160 to current of Uncanny X-Men. I started collecting around 250 or so. When I was a teenager, I had a part time job. Several weeks I spent my entire paycheck on back issues. A year ago or so Milehighcomics.com had an 80% off sale on many of the other issues that I didn't have going back to 160. I just can't make myself spend the money for the Bryne era issues. I remember my Mom would get pissed when I would ask her for gas money when I had a job!

The comic shop In Virginia had a 50% off sale of any comics over 5 bucks.Well I snagged what back Issues I could last year. But many of them In the 223-240 range were marked at $ 15.oo dollars an Issue and at half off It came to $ 7.50 a book.
I let them go and decided that a better deal would be around soon.6 Months later I found some cheap Uncanny Issues and I was a happy man. :)

As I get older, and poorer. I realized that I really only buy comics to read them, so now instead of spending $ 15 on a single back issue, I'll just spend that or a few bucks more on a TBP. I did manage to get most of the Byrne era stories from the old Classic X-Men title.

That happens. The most I have ever gave for a Back Issue and this was a X-Mas gift to myself was 20 bucks for Uncanny 142# In Mint Condition!I so wanted that for X-Mas and that was the most I have ever paid for a single Issue.
It'll most likely be the last time I ever do that as well.

Atari Force 1#This Is dated Jan. 1984 and was DC's attempt at doing Atari Video games comics.I heard raves about this and Issue 1# was goin for a buck so...I bought It.
Avengers West Coast 1#:Great story! The Avengers get a West Coast Team and Its a pretty awesome read.Hawkeye as the Leader was pretty good.
Adventure Comics 448# and 474#:I've read 474# and It geatures an old Plastic Man story by Marv Wolfman.448# Looks cool with that Aquaman cover.
Blue Devil 24#: I haven't read this yet.But I'm slowly becoming a Devil fan so..I'm happy I picked this up.
Squandren Supreme 1#: Picked this up due to the fact the late Mark Gruenwald wrote It.
Justice League of America 169#:I loved the cover of this and picked It up.Haven't read It yet....

I love the discount bins too, but my LCS doesn't really have cheaper bins, so I only get to look through them at shows. They are holding JSA 3, 5-7, 9-15 for me to buy one or two a week until I have the complete run (I picked up 4, 8, 16-19 on Friday) and I thought that was very nice.

This is the THIRD TIME IN A ROW they've sent me the wrong book.
I ordered Dork Tower #26 - "Dice Fidelity."
The first time, I got the 2003 "Clickey Special." I sent it back.
The second time, I got issue #25. I still have it, because I was growing annoyed.
This time... THEY SENT THE SAME DAMN CLICKEY SPECIAL I SENT BACK!!!

I picked up Wolverine #1 (1988) recently. I had a Wolverine run when I was younger, but it started from #8. I decided not to recreate that run, but instead only go up to #25. If anyone remembers that particular issue, Patch babysits his friend's son.
I could've picked up Wolverine #1 on eBay for relatively cheap, but I try not to buy comics online unless I'm desperate. My question to you is how much is this copy going for in your area (LCS or convention)?

How expensive is it to get a full run of a long running Marvel title? I usually dot around to enjoy the title and buy the Masterworks for old stuff.
I was hoping if I stick to buying new stuff every month I'd get a full run of something the long way but with the ammount of Relaunches I dunno if that will ever happen.

I'm close to a full run on Spiderman (vol.1).I need something like 15 Issues and that will complete that.I'm not In a hurry as I usually see other books I need & want.I need 20 something books to complete Green Lantern (vol.2) run.

I got some books at Half Price Books.
I got Demon Annual # 2 (1st hitman), Daredevil #254 (1st Typhoid Mary) and Silver Surfer #45 (Thanos toys around with Mephisto) for only a buck each.
I think their token comic guy has no clue what he's doing. I've found so many money books for $1 (Marvel GI Joe last issue, Hulk #28 - Bruce Jone's 1st Ish, Flash 197-200,) and they have Spawn's in their "collector's box" for $5 or $10 ea.
Bad for them, good for comic fans in the area :)

I actually got a run of Uncanny X-Men 223-228,235,244,321-324 all for a buck a piece off a guy at a Comic show here.Someone came back later and scored Issue 219# (cool Havok cover) as well as 231-235.I was pissed...I so wanted those Issues!
I also got a huge run of Avengers 251-272 for 75 cents to buck a piece.Guys was having a half priced sale at his shop. Its great when you see a key Issue thats not priced outta this world.I used to want Uncanny 256# so bad , but places I'd go would have It at 10 and 12 bucks.I got It for 2 dollars at a comic shop.

Although Crisis On Infinite Earths #1-12, History of the DC Universe #1-2 is the post script for the series. History of the DC Universe is written by Marv Wolfman & pencild by George Perez.

If you mean titles like Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, or Uncanny X-Men, then the cost to get the complete run will range in the thousands. I don't think I'll ever chase after complete runs of these titles, because I can't afford to get the copies in the grades I want.
You still can get a rull run of a title that doesn't do a lot of relaunches. DC and Vertigo titles have decent runs. Marvel has a quite a few medium-sized series that are completely attainable and won't break your wallet. MK Daredevil, Web of Spider-Man, Wolverine (1988) are just a few that come to my mind. Besides some money all it takes is a little time, effort, patience.

I should really go back to filling in my runs. Within the last year I picked up new titles to read and haven't been working on completing my proposed titles. Having a full run is one of the sweetest parts about comic collecting.

As well as some of the older series that were eventually cancelled like New Mutants and X-Factor. X-Force runs are also very easy to get. Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man issues are also not that difficult to find. Now are Web of Spider-Man issues. I've been slowly collecting those out of the 25 cent and 50 cent bins at shows.
But me personally, I'm still fighting to get my full (Uncanny) X-Men run (like many people seem to want, Uncanny). I was having a hard time getting below #143, because I wanted to fill in all of the issues above it, which I was missing about 5 of. But this year, with multiple conventions, I decided to just go out and start buying up any issues I could find for a reasonable amount. So now, I only have 116 issues left to go. And I have them all printed out on a nice sheet of paper showing which issues I still need. Right now, I have every issue from 142 and up. One thing though is that as long as the copies are readable, I'm not that anal on condition. If I can find a nice version, good. But I'm not passing up a good issue because the cover looks a little worn. That just shows love for the issue.
The issues left for me to get are:
1-19, 21-30, 32, 33, 35-42, 44, 45, 48-56, 58, 59, 61-76, 78, 80-84, 88, 89, 91, 93-110, 112-114, 116-121, 123, 125, 127-131, 133-135, 137, and 141.
Next year, I plan to bring that down even further.

I have 142# as a starting point of some kind. And I've plugged In various Issues over time.I sense getting a full run of Uncanny X-Men will take me a very long time....sad to say.But good luck Ronald on finding those 116 Issues you need.

Speaking of Uncanny, I'm working on two smaller runs: #108-143 and #245-280. I'm taking my time since I want it in NM condition and I'm really anal about what defects I allow. For instance, I can't stand creases on the spine. They are my sworn enemy; those things make my OCD explode.

Is It any shock that In the 1980's "The Avengers" kicked ass?Man...Its a shame that things went to hell In a handbasket when Roger Stern left.
I love me some Stern Avengers, I just got 201, 203, 204, and 278-281. That gives me 201 to 281. I'd love to get some of the Avengers in the 100s, but they get a little too pricey.

I'll keep looking...trust me.If I'm In a comic book store or an antique shop...If they have cheap Avengers back Issues...thier mine.
I recently bought Avengers #185, 187 & Black Orchid #2-3. I also bought the X-Men Special Edition #1 for the new Chris Claremont & Dave Cockrum backstory that features Kitty's belated surprise 14th birthday party. Claremont is sneaky in putting in the new Shi'ar enhanced Danger Room along with the new Mansion's layout.

Ostrander may get blasted for making Firestorm a Fire Elemential, but his work In 62-63 was good I think.Stein's dying and Is possibly going Insane....

Action Comics 489#:This had a "Whitman" logo over the DC Symbol.I haven't read It.It was cheap and I thought It was pretty neat.
G.I Joe 50#: I saw this for 2 bucks and It called to me.Its a good read and It features Serpenter and how Cobra Commander feels threatned by him.Plus they fight the Joes In a small town.
Legion of Superheroes 262#:I loved the cover. "Its the only way you'll Surive Legionaires--You must Kill everyone on this planet!"
Secret Origins 7#: Features the origin of everyones favorite G.L: Guy Gardner baby!!
Thanks for the offer Founder. If ya find It..I'll see what I can do. ;)

A back issue I picked up recently is Incredible Hulk #367. This issue was the conclusion of a four-issue storyline where an incredibly weakened Hulk has a few hours to save himself from a virus. It's cool because the story arc has a countdown timer showing how much time the Hulk has left until he dies.

You can't go wrong with back issues of G.I. Joe. My favorite stories always revolved around the Cobra officers. Cobra Commander, Destro, Serpentor, Zartan, and other villains were way more interesting than the Joes (except Snake Eyes, of course). If I recall correctly, issues after #120 or so got a little corny.

Just got my hands on a Daredevil #181. Although I'm far from a excellent grader, I would say the copy is about strict VF/NM. Looking at the value in the Overstreet guide, I thought picking up the book for less than $10 USD was a great steal. But then I see the issue going on eBay for relatively cheap.
I'm glad I got the book. This is my first DD issue I ever got from one of his regular series, and the only other DD story I ever read was Daredevil: Yellow. I hear nothing but praises for Frank Miller's DD, so this story should be really good.

The Might Thor 448# & 450#: Ugh....I just got these because Spiderman was In 1 Issue. And 450# was a special double-sized Issue. But these sucked.
Secret Origins 14#: Fantastic read. It has the back Issue story of the "Sucide Squad." Its a good read where we learn how the Squad existed from the 40's In many forms.
Superman 3# (Vol.2): "O'Deadly Darksied". The cover looks fantastic. Bryne seemed so on with these.
What If ? 40# (Vol.2): Haven't read It yet but this Is a What If where Storm remained a Thief.
Flash 71#: Great cover. Haven't read yet. Vs an old rogue , Dr. Alchemy.
Detective Comics 650# :This has an ood cover with Batman & Robin chained to a rock with a Knight and Dragon. Its a pretty wierd cover.
Legion of Superheroes 2# (Vol.2) :This Is from 1984 and features the series Geffin and Levitz worked on. I gotta say Its a great read. I'm slowly finding cheap back Issues of the LOSH.

Got my hands on a pristine copy of Wolverine #10 where Wolverine and Sabretooth duke it out in the Canadian mountains.
This issue is one of my favorite comics of all time. I love it beyond words! I still have a tattered copy from my childhood that I read more times than I could count. I don't care if the story was retconned or made obsolete by a later storyline. I still believe this is how the relationship between Sabretooth and Wolverine should be, where Sabretooth is a stronger version of Wolverine.

Ok, just got back from my LOC and scored a big haul.
He's restocking after his sale still and just filled a long box of Green Lanterns. About a long box worth. About 1/2 from the Mike Grell era to Crisis and the rest from the current series.
I commented that if the sale was still going on that it would be real tempting to pick up a run like this. I couldn't have read more than 1/2 of these back when they came out.
He gave me a better than sale price.
I had to.

The Brave & the Bold 194# : This features the Flash & Batman vs Rainbow Rider and some loser villain. His name escapes me. Seems they go to a shrink who preaches to them that they can Beat ..., Flash & Batman. They lose and the vil shrink gets away. Nice fun read. Light hearted Batman adventure.
New Years Evil: The Rogues : This Is from those New Years evil specials awhile back. They Introduced Cog In these. Well In this the Rogues go to a temple which James Jesse (Reformed Trickster) lures them to. Neron shows up and Its not that good I think.
You like the old Captain Boomerang this Is for you.
Thor 351# : Haven't read but Thor looks pissed and ready to kick some ass In this Issue.
Team Titans 1# (Kilowat Origin story ): Part of the Titans cross-over Total Choas. So/so story.
Legion of Substitute Heroes Special 1985: Great funny story! Giffen Is at his fun peek with this. Matter Eater Lad Is less than happy that he calls these guys In to help with something. Funny read.
Legion of Superheroes 274# : Features a great cover where Ultra Boy's supposed Death. As he shows up. Great cover.
Legion of Superheroes 52# (Vol.4) : Features an Inner look at Timber Wolf. His history and charactor. We see him as he looks back at Important moments where he screwed things up. Nice sentimential Issue people.

I haven't bought many back issues lately, for several reasons: lack of money, lack of good local back issue selections, and I have complete sets or runs of a great many titles already. Over the past year, I've bought a few sets from ebay:
Blaze of Glory #1-4: Several Marvel western heroes die, interesting story and cool art by Leo Manco
X-Men: The Hidden Years (complete set): Cool retro feel by Byrne, some decent stories in the run.
Marvel: The Lost Generation (complete set): It's Byrne art, which I like, but I simply had a hard time caring about all these unknown characters.
Thunderbolts (#1-81, several annuals and specials): Started off very strong, but began going downhill a bit toward the end, and really nosedived with the Ultimate Fighting stuff. Why the heck didn't they just make that a new title? It had nothing at all to do with the "real" Thunderbolts. And even if sales on Thunderbolts was lagging, did they honestly think THAT would make them pick up? Still, the set was easily worth the average 60 cents an issue I paid.
And that is all the back issues I've bought since last Wondercon, where I got a huge haul of stuff, FAR too much to mention here.
Thanks for the Info and fixin my blunder.
Chris Claremont makes a literal reference to Dr. Strange #8 when Dormammu had kidnapped Gaia in order to corporally manifest on the Earthly plane in Uncanny X-Men #222 by the powerful Adversary going by the Nazi alias (The Dr. Strange storyline occurs in Dr. Strange #7-9). I picked up three back issues so far this new year.
Uncanny X-Men #24 - This is my first issue from the original X-Men title. It's really tattered with many creases but still very cool. It's funny how older comics always have more words in them than newer comics. I always feel like I'm getting my money's worth.
Uncanny X-Men #125 - A beautiful looking copy that appears better than its stated VF condition. I've never read this issue and I'm not going to anytime soon because because I don't have any of the immediate surrounding issues.
Uncanny X-Men #137 - A reader copy of a comic I already have. Displayed on the wall behind the dealer, the comic cried out to me and told me to find it a home. How could I pass this issue up? It's the death of Phoenix!

I definitely agree with you about the lack of money and back issue selections. :(
I love looking at or hearing about others' complete sets or long runs. There's a deep enjoyment in digging through a comic box and flipping through comic after comic of a single title. I've only been reading and collecting comics again since 2001 (mostly fresh off the stand Modern), so I can't claim anything spectacular ... yet. :)

You know that's all part of a conspiracy?
Back then they went "You know what, someday people will be paying lots of money for these comics, we'd better make sure they get their money's worth, so writer, put lots of words and artist, you make sure to put lots of panels"

Master of Kung Fu: Nearly complete set of 17-125, only missing #18
New Teen Titans: 1-58, vol 2 1-104, new series 1-present.
That's only the longest runs... I have over 20,000 comics in all. As you can see, I have most sets complete back to the silver age or early bronze age. Unfortunately, my local shops tend to only carry the newer stuff, leaving conventions as the best place for me to find back issues. I use ebay for cheaper stuff I don't mind the condition on too much, but valuable books I want to see, hold, and look through before I buy. I went to Japan for 2 years (1996-98), so that put a big 2 year gap in all my collections. Most of them I've been able to fill in since then, but other titles I found I'd lost interest in, and didn't bother to restart/fill in when I got back.

I tend to find some back Issues In Antique shops for cheap. Some stuff Is marked up Incredibly high. Like the X-Men run from 100-140 or the Teen Titans stuff. Like vol.1 from the 70's goes for 10 to 20 bucks an Issue here.
But I usually find a good back Issue for a buck or 2. Plus theres Flea Markets and I found a good couple Issues of Fantastic Four and Brave & the Bold 200# back last summer!

Great set of comics you have there, Samurai! Do you ever find yourself buying TPBs of comics you already have?

I understand the sarcasm, but I can't really tell if you're just joking or specifically poking fun at me.
The copy of X-Men #24 I bought was less than $10 USD, not too bad I think. After being amused by the old advertisements and reading both the actual story and the letters page, I really don't feel like I've been shortchanged or anything. :)

The Grand High Priest of Howard the Duck only pokes fun at the Kidney Lady and then only with a 10 foot wooden pole.

Not very often, though I occassionally have if I were missing some of the issues that are reprinted in the TPB and have had a hard time finding a copy.
$10 is a great deal, assuming the grade is not too low. I enjoy seeing the old ads and such... I think my favorite is a golden age issue of Sensation Comics starring Wonder Woman. It was printed during WW2, and the bottom of every page has a different pro-war slogan, such as "Turn in your scrap to beat the Jap!" It really highlights the different thinking of the time, and all the things people did at home to help the war effort.

Archie at Riverdale High #66 - I don't care what anyone says, I like Archie comics. And since the little girls who bought them off the stands didn't always take care of them, there's some difficulty in finding them in a condition I'm completely satisfied with. I'm guessing it's nearly impossible to acquire a NM run of older Archie comics by buying back issues.
Predator: Bad Blood #1-3 out of 4 - I don't know how the hell I missed #4. I could swear I picked it out of the box. If you're wondering, Predator is way cooler than aliens. I have yet to read the series so I can't say if it's good or not.
If my back issues look weak what can I say, I picked these issues out of discount boxes. :)

Okay, I ECW asked me to post about the set of old FF's I got today, so here they are.
Fantastic Four 51, 55-58
Issue 51 is, of course, the classic "This Man, This Monster!" Possibly the best single-issue story Lee and Kirby produced on this comic. Wallowing in self-pity following the departure of Galactus and the Silver Surfer, the Thing wanders the rain-soaked streets of New York. His journey will lead him to a man filled with hate, and a bizarre plot that will decide the fate of the FF. Featuring the first appearance of the Negative Zone, this issue is an amazing tale of heroism, fate, and choice.
In 55, the Surfer returns after exploring the earth to the only human who has ever shown him kindness, Alicia Masters. And when the Thing walks in, well, that's when the fight starts, a fight that lasts the entire issue, and goes down as one of the biggest slobberknockers ever produced by the House of Ideas.
56 features the return of Klaw and the Black Panther, introduce just four months ago in 52. Not the highlight of the run, but still chock-full of Silver Age goodness.
57 and 58 are part of the three-part epic wherein Dr. Doom steals the Surfer's Power Cosmic and sets out to conquer the Earth. With the FF powerless to stop him, how will the world survive? Still remembered as one of the best Doom stories ever.
And running through all of these issues is the subplot of the Inhumans, trapped in Attilan behind an impenetrable force field. Will Johnny ever see his lady-love Crystal again? Sadly, true believers would have to wait until issue 59 for the answer.

Legion of Superheroes 50# ( Vol.4) : Extra sized Issue as Matter Eater Lad gets married , Cosmic Boy buries some Legionaires and others quit or get Hospitalized. Its seems like such a sad time In Legion history before the big mid 90's reboot.
Detective Comics 648# : Is the 2nd part of the classic Spoiler/Cluemaster storyline that started In 647#. I have all the Issues around 647# now It seems . One day...you shall be mine.
So Its time people. Post your Back Issue buys and finds here! :)

Todays Back Issue haul saw me grab an Issue I never believed I would find. Plus how It may..tie Into Identity Crisis In a way.
Tempus Fugitive: Section 1# & Section 3# : Haven't read these yet. But damn...the covers look nice and they were cheap. 25 cents a piece. How could I saw no ?
Superman: The 10 Cent Adventure: Grabbed this for 10 cents.
Legion of Superheroes 0# : Where It all began back In the 90's. Nice re-Introduction by Mark Waid and McGraw. Wow...2 relaunches of the same franchise by Waid. Who woulda thunk It ?
Legion of Superheroes 46# : Mordru has pretty much revived the dead of the LSH and the new guys battle against them. In the end the Legion stop the spell at the cost of a few members.
Legionaires 16# : The Time stream Is going haywire as the Legion loses records of a Valor ever being part of thier team. More choas happens as events start to change. This Is the Issue before the "End of an Era " would begin. Saturn Girl , Cosmic Boy and Live Wire trip back to the past and Is said to be lost In time! Wow...
Incredible Hulk 425# : This see's the Fall of the Pathethon . Nice story as " smart Hulk" at the time tries to help everyone make It out alive. Betty gets caught In an energy blast and lays knocked out as Bruce Hulks out In anger and turns Into a savage Bruce Banner!
Captain Marvel 1# Vol. 4 ( 36# old series) : A key back Issue I needed as Genis loses his mind over the failure to save a young woman who was destined to save the entire cosmos. He flips out as poor Rick Is left In the negative zone.
Batman & The Outsiders 1# : This Is It baby! The Issue Batman decides to quit the JLA and walk over them not helping him save Lucious Fox In the middle of a warzone. This has been a back Issue I've hunted and looked for ..for awhile now.
It and Brave & the Bold 200# always In the back of my mind to get. Nice to see It happen huh ?
So what Is your: Back Issue find lately ?

Been meanin to post these back Issues I've gotten the past week. So here goes:
Stars Wars 22# : This Is the Marvel series. I have Issues 2,18, and 44 As well.
Captain America 275# : This features Captain America fightin and his secret ID gettin exposed to his gf. Nice cover.
Avengers 230# : In this Issue Hank Pym finally gets vindication for the plot of Egghead. He leaves the mansion and Is cleared finally. Hawkeye kills Egghead and Is also cleared.
This Is further proof that Roger Stern's greatness on Avengers will never be denied.
Legionaires 14#: so/so Issue. This Is months before the big revamp In 1994. The LOSH face down some Mayor of a planet named Paris.
Excalibur 71#: Part of the Fatal Attractions story-arc that saw Colossas turn and join the Acolytes. Good Issue as Kitty feels ashamed at betraying him and how far she felt that time had taken her from the X-Men. Good Issue...
Justice League Taskforce 1# : In this wierd 1st Issue we see the team being put togethor as a strike force to handle a situation near Africa before It blows up. The Martian Manhunter recruits Gypsy , Flash and Aquaman. As a huge suprise Nightwing shows up and gets a cold shoulder from Aquaman ! Thats pretty wierd seein that.
Hell even the Martian Manhunter complains that Nightwing Is too reckless at times. Wow...
Infinity Inc Annual 1# : Haven't read yet. But the cover looks pretty Intriquing. It has Obsidion and Jade talkin about thier mom. It also Is a Crisis cross-over type Issue.
Well thats my Back Issues for the last week or 2...whats yours ? ;)

Its been awhile since I've updated my " Back Issue " finds. So heres the latest rundown the past month In what I've gotten.
Tales Of The Legion of Superheroes 325# : This Is the last monthly Legion tale In the old 80's book before It became straight reprints. Nice story but as you can tell...change was on Its way and It wouldn't be helping the LOSH.
Legion of Superheroes 56# : Nice read as the " adult " Legion uncover who has been supplying the Khunds.
Legion of Superheroes 100# ( vol.4) : This was a huge celebration Issue. The Legion had been stranded In the 20th Century and faced Computo to get home. Plus It featured the return of Paul Levitz as he wrote a story alongside Walt Simonson. Nice Issue
Legionaires Annual 1# This was an Elseworlds tale Involving a type of Futuristic Knights. It had a forbbidden affair and the art looks like someone we know.
The Legion 13# : This plot sort of trailed off from when Brainac 5 faced down Computo . In this Brainac 5 has to deal with his creation wanting to kill him and the Legion.
The Legion 25# : This Involved Superboy showing up and meeting the Legion. Plus It was a celebration of how Live Wire gave his life to save his Team In the Legion Lost mini-series. Plus we see that even though Matter-Eater Lad went Insane , the Team still considers him a hero when people ask why he Isn't honored.
This also featured Garth returning to life. Nice cover as well.
X-Men 6# (Vol.2) : Features fantastic art by Jim Lee. What a great cover and Sabertooth.
Superman Annual 4# : This was part of the Eclipso cross-over that ran thru the DC Annuals and books In 1992. Great read as Lois Lane gets possessed.
What If 60# This Is about the X-Men's Wedding Album. Featuring Scott & Jean's marriage In a ton of " What If " scenes.
Valor 19#-21# : Great Issues as Adult Valor learns that he's gonna have to go back Into the stasis where he had to stay 1,000 years. Plus he has to fill In old battles his young self didn't get to fight.
In the end this Is the setup for Zero Hour.
Justice League 108#: Wow.....now I know why Morrison was tapped to revamp the JLA. Horrible title and what happened to Power Girl was completely forgotten thank god. Only Nuklon and Obsidion were good In this as Blue Devil was changed .
No wonder the plug was pulled 5 Issues later.
Weapon X 1# : Great 1st Issue. I enjoyed It and may search down other cheap Weapon X Issues.
Well thats my recent "Back Issue " finds at the moment. Anyone else got anything lately ?

Its another few weeks and more back Issue fun. Heres a list of some back Issues and what I think.
Dazzler 40# Featuring a wacky teamup I never would have Imagined. This Is from 1985 and has the Beyonder and Dazzler facing down amped up bikers. Also features O.Z Chase and his crazy dog!
Booster Gold 1# The hero for the media age has arrived. Booster Gold Is pretty funny as he handles his Hollywood career and what not. Poor Skeets....we barely knew ya.
Legion of Superheroes Annual 2# : Features the " Legend of Valor ". This Is the story where Valor Is featured seeding planets. Great story.
Legion of Superheroes 300# : This one has It all baby. Huge extra sized book as the Legion celebrates and a member gets blinked from this reality. Nice story....and alternate realities.
Avengers 369# : This Is the last arc of the " Bloodties" cross-over. Story's not so good.
Kamandi: At Earth's End 1# 0f (6): aVertigo mini-series from the 90's. Featuring Kamandi In some wierd Earth story. Issue Is so/so.
Well thats It people for now. Hope ya check some of these out. ;)

This is my favorite Legion story ever. It's beautifully written and drawn, and takes on an additional layer of meaning if you read it as a refutation of the Adult Legion stories.
Also, along with Justice League of America #200 and Superman #400, this issue is the model for what an anniversary issue should be.

Its been awhile since I've updated my latest Back Issue finds. So after nearly a month away...heres some I have gotten.
Avengers 229# : I needed this to finish the Egghead/Hank Pym story-arc that saw Eggheads death. The Avengers are shocked to learn that Pym was kidnapped ( or helped as some think ! ) In a packed Court Room. Egghead would admit he caused all of the problems that made Pym a fugitive.
Avengers 252# : Stern writes a classic as slowly Vison Is building towards taking over the Earth as a grand solution to bring peace. Hercules faces a tough battle as well.
G.I Joe 21# : The famous " Silent Issue ". I actually have 2 copies of It and this latest one Is slightly more worn than the Issue I have. Still a classic Is hard to turn down.
Cloak & Dagger 1# : This Is the start of thier series. I picked It up because It was a cheap 1# to grab. Nice read as Cloak punishes those vile " Flesh Peddlers !! "
Excalibur 73# : Nice cover...haven't read It yet.
Alpah Flight 6# (Vol.1) : It has a fantastic cover. The white " Snowblind " cover. I haven't read It eithor.
Fantastic Four 385# : Part 7# of a god awful " Starblast " cross-over. No Idea why I picked It up. Odds are I'll be lost from page 1.
Captain America 339# : Its a " Fall of the Mutants" Tie-In Issue. Haven't read It yet.
Thats It for now people. Thanks.

Todays back Issue finds are what I got for my Birthday as I looked around. They were cheap and easy to find...so happy reading.
Outsiders 6# (Vol.2) : This was a early 90's relaunch with Eradicator and the orginal team. It didn't last long.
Checkmate 8# & 21# : With Maxwell Lord running this Organization now , Its a shock back Issues of this Isn't moving asap. So I picked them up.
L.E.G.I.O.N 61# : Great cover. I wanted this Issue and hope to find 62# to see the death of Lady Quark.
Justice League Taskforce 9# : Haven't read yet. Nice cover.
New Titans 121# : This features the near end of Wolfman's run on the book. Even putting Green Lantern , Impulse and Supergirl on the team did nothing to help ...sad to say.
Justice League America 63# : Guy Gardner quits the JLA! Say It Isn't so !!
Vigilante 1# : With rumors of a new series set to happen soon I picked this up to read.
Action Comics 662# : Clark reveals his secret ID to Lois In a shocker. This was setting up events after thier engangment. Nice cover...
And thats It. Happy reading guys and thanks for wishing me a Happy Birthday as well. Means a lot. ;) :)

This weeks selections were picked up at your local Flea Market.
Action Comics 600#: In this extra sized Issue , Superman kisses Wonder Woman and It features a story about Lois Lane.
Captain America 323# (Vol.1) : This was a fun Issue and the cover Is the classic ones Marvel did In the mid 80's with all thier charactors around In a frame style. Also It had Johnny Walker's emergance as Super Patriot and Cap Is under pressure by the US Government after he kills a Terrorist.
Nice ...
Star Wars 83# : This Is Marvel and has a nice cover of Lando diving thru gunfire. Haven't read yet.
Justice League America 40# : The end of Giffen's arc with Despero saw the League fractured . Ted was pissed at Booster and Scott Free was killed It seemed. If anyone see's why IC works and how heroes don't get along they need to pick this up.
Batman's angry about his failure and Superman suggest that the JLA needs more firepower In case someone dies. Batman Is less than happy to hear this and the 2 leave on bad terms.
End result...best back Issue I have this week.
So happy reading and heres hoping some of you have new back issues to talk about. ;)

As usual even I am shocked at times that I can find a key Back Issue. In fact I call yesterdays cheap back Issue finds gold. Yesterday I went to a wierd fair mixed with Wrestling (missed It all by 5pm) , Toughman contests,Karoake, beer drinking all mixed In with a Flea Market. Its there I found some good Issues.
Heres a list:
Legion of Superheroes 61# (Vol.3): Its the end of the 1st Legion Era. The team meets up with thier time deplaced SW6 counterpounts on a barron world where the Time Trapper tells them they must make a decison on the fate of the World there.
Each of them must become one and fade away and like heroes do the LSH march Into thier fate. Its the end of 30+ years of Legion history and the last " End of an Era " back Issue I needed. Good-bye Legion....
Legionaires 53# : On a happier note this features Mon'El and how the Universe see's him as a GOD. The Knunds are plannin somethin big time and go to Daxam to try and get that Planet to break away from the UP. Mon'El shows up and ends It.
Hawkman 13 (Vol.4) # : In this Geoff Johns back Issue , he reveals who killed Kendra's parents. Mad and angry Kendra wants to kill the rogue cop and make him suffer !
Action Comics 598# : Ok OMAC Fans can you guess what this features ? DING DING.....Its the 1st appearance of Checkmate. I found It as well. Haven't read yet.
SPECIAL CHEAP FIND: Modern Comics : Captain Atom 84# : At 1st I thought this featured Ted Kord's 1st appearnce...but I'm off an Issue. DAMN!! But It features the new Captain Atom. So I found a cheap Issue for a buck and got this. Its slightly worn some but otherwise In good condition. ;)

In my seemingly never-ending quest to complete my Mike Mignola collection, I traded in a bunch of old comics that I knew would sell but wasn't really following any more.
Most of these were below cover price, and about a third were in the 50 cent bin! :D
Aquaman #6
Batman Adventures #25
Starman #42 - 45
Quasar #15
Metropol #9
Superman #18, 23, and annual #6
Jenny Finn #1
Adv of Superman Anual #6
Batman #426 - 429
Hellraiser #13
Detective comics #583
X Factor #55 & Annual #6
X Force #8
Zombie World #2
X Men Classic #68 (completing Mike's cover run on that title)
Critical Mass #1
Batman/Judge Dredd : Vendetta in Gotham
Punisher #6
Solar #24
Lobo : Unamerican Gladiators #3 & 4 (finishing that up as well)
Batman #452 - 454
Action Comics Annual #6 (what's up with all of the #6 annuals?!)
Dark Horse Comics #2
and
Gen 13 #13c, which features Hellboy but no Mignola
Pretty good haul if ya ask me!

Doom Patrol 40# : This Is the run by Grant Morrison who pretty much carried the Doom Patrol to huge wierd highs. I haven't read It yet , but the cover Is just...wild.
West Coast Avengers 57#-58#: In this , Wanda continues to lose her mind and join with her father . Its a great Issue and sadly 58# doesn't continue the arc as Fabian N does a fill In Issue.
Justice League America 80# : In this Booster Gold gets new armor from Blue Beetle. It featured a lot of change and was shockingly good. I enjoyed the Issue as 2 alien political prisioners land on Earth and Wonder Woman and Captain Atom differ on what they should do.
Superman's Girlfriend :Lois Lane 137# : This I found cheap and Its from 1974. Its also In great condition which shocked me. I haven't read It yet...but It has a nice cover.
Blue Beetle 2# ( DC) : I really wanted Issue 1#. I looked and found Issues 6- 24 In various order. I have Issue 24 already and wanted 1#. Instead the closest I got was Issue 2#
Blue Devil 30# : Featuring a roll call of Rogues. Grodd,Captain Cold,Golden Glider and Pied Piper as well as others! Haven't read but sounds ..Interesting.
Daredevil 262# : Part of the Inferno cross-over. Looks In good shape. And has a good cover.
Sucide Squad 2# : This Is the Ostarnder series. Again I tried to find a 1# , but could only find a 2# . Dang me....lol.

Okay, here's a weird one. I just got back from the San Diego Comic-Con and for the first time ever, really, I had time AND money to do actual shopping. One of the items on my wish list was a run of the old Detective Comics, both Archie Goodwin's -- 437-443 -- and then Len Wein's arc that followed, the "Bat-Murderer!" five-parter that ran from #444 to #448.
Now, I did really well on this trip. I scored #438 and #440 of the Goodwins (already had #439 and #443) and almost all of the Weins, #445 through #448. Parts two through five of the story, in other words. And all very reasonably priced -- I think the highest I paid was $5 and most of them were $3 or less. I just want them to read, so I don't really care about condition as long as they're intact.
But here's the weird part. I did see part one of Wein's story a couple of times -- #444 -- in roughly similar condition to the others, but never for less than $20. Most times it was over $25. It was nutty. See, it's the Archie Goodwin run on Detective that's supposed to be rare and valuable. There's absolutely nothing special about Detective #444 except it was Julius Schwartz' first issue back after Goodwin left, the backup story was no longer Manhunter but instead a pretty standard Elongated Man story, and though it was one of the "100 pages for 60 cents" issues, so were some of the others in that same run and I was getting them for $3 and $5.
So what was the deal with #444? I dunno. But I decided I could live without it for a while longer.
Here it is, for those who were wondering:

Superboy & the Legion of Superheroes 239# : This Is a giant Issue for 60 cents. Its slight worn but In otherwise good condition.
DC Comics 25# : Superman and Phantom Stranger teamup to save the life og Jon Ross! Great cover but sadly nicked on the upper corners.
Worlds Finest 248# : This features another classic....cover. In this 80 page giant , Superman accuses Bruce Wayne of killing Batman! Wow....also smallnicks on edges of the cover.
DC Secret Origins 38# : This features the origin of Green Arrow and Speedy. I liked the origins personally. This ones partly by Mike Grell as well If anyones Interested.
X-Men 61# (Vol.2) : Haven't read yet. It filled a hole In my collection.
Booster Gold 6# , 8#: I'm shocked no ones really going after the Booster Gold Issues yet. Because Booster Is gonna play an Important role this year as Dido said. His Origin In Issue 6# was pretty cool. And facing the LSH In 8# made me wanna find 9#.
Turok:Dinosaur Hunter 1# : It had a pretty cover. That whole foil look and all. I don't usually buy much other than Marvel/DC but jesus..this thing looked awesome. Nice.... :)
New Mutants 32# : Haven't read yet. Bought It for the cover.
G.I.Joe 30#-34#: This came In a cheap 2 dollar pack and I decided to pick em up. Nice covers thus far .
And thats It for now. Happy reading guys. ;)

Heh..Its not cheating. E-Bay Is the new version of the classic Flea Markets. The places where you see a run of Defenders for 50 cents a piece. Or a run of old comics for a buck a piece.
The Hunt Is the best. I wanted that West Coast Avengers arc where Wanda went nuts and I had to comb thru some old Issues to find It. So I can understand why you won't though. Hunting Is pretty cool.

Well Its time I gave a run down of some good classic back Issues I have snagged recently. So here we go...
Wonder Woman 71#-74# : This features the Bill Loebs classic where Diana gets a job at a fast food place. It also features battles with a kid who taps into computers and a sub-plot featuring the White Magician.
Untold Legend of the Batman 3# : I have Issue one of this mini-series from the 80's, Features a Pre-Crisis look at Batman's history and all. Nice...
Adventure Comics 401# & 490# : Issue 401# features Supergirl and the book's cover is the only problem. I had to tape and fix some of cover which was the only bad part.
490# Is in fine shape and I like how DC tried letting readers create new villains and heroes.
Avengers 44# ( 459#) : Features a great Thor cover.
The Legion of Superheroes 296# : Great cover as Sun Boy holds a fallen Legionaire!
Vigilante 22# : This features a great story where Adrian Chase Is wanting to leave his Vigilante past behind him. Chase however discovers that someone is using his old costume to kill and hunt down bad guys. ( I'm thinking Chase is suffering from a nervous breakdown and is doing this in some way...)
Nice Issue.
Kamandi : The Last Boy on Earth 15# : Old 70's comic In great shape. The cover has the funniest damn thing I've seen on a comic:
APES IN CONTROL OF WASHINGTON , DC ?
WHAT WILL THEY DO WITH THE WATERGATE SECRETS ?
G.I Joe 58# : Great cover as we see the New Cobra Commander!
DC Comics Presents 36# : Nice cover as Superman faces off with Starman ( Prince Gayven).
Marvel Universe 1# : Its a double-sized profiles of everyone from the Marvel Universe Abomination to Batroc !
Booster Gold 2#,9#,22# : Booster faces the Legion and saves Ronald Reagan. Then In 22# , he sadly can't save his twin sister and the blow hurts him. As Booster says.." I am truely alone now."
DC Focus 1# : From 1987 which is DC hyping Millennuim ( that horrible company cross-over) to its fulliest. There they hype all the books and why Titans wouldn't be taking part in this.

I know I said way back that I'd post some of what I got for helping sort out that comic shop. Well, that's a long list and I haven't time for that yet.
But here's some of the stuff I've been reading since WWC
Giant Sized Spider-Man #1 w/Dracula
Giant Sized Chillers #1 - W/Dracula
Giant Sized Dracula #3 - w/Dracula
I think I've got all the Giant appearances now.
Tomb of Dracula #2 - found it in a $2 dollar box (wee), wish I could find a 10 like that.
Green Lantern 100 - Hal, Green Arrow, Airwave and Black Canary. Denny O'Neal and Mike Grell and two complete stories.
I also picked up most of a run of Batman Family. That was a fun book, a little hokey, but there's an issue just after it turns into a dollar book with Jim Starlin, Denny O'Neil, Michael Golden and P. Craig Russel work in it. Just about perfect.
Found a Swamp Thing #165, now I just need 2 more issues to have it all.
My Gurnee show is tomorrow. My first goal there is make enough to pay for at least part of my rebuilt drain out to the sewer. Still should be able to find some cool stuff, there's a few new dealers coming in. Now if I had full time work again I could really go to town.

Been prowling eBay again myself, as it happens. Some big scores the last couple of days...
Pre-Crisis, early 80's Superboy. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6554315949&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1) I always thought this was a really under-rated series, it kind of fell between the cracks what with Crisis and then the old Superboy TV show. Cary Bates wrote some really clever scripts and Kurt Schaffenberger did some nice old-school art here too. I never was all that into Superman but I always enjoyed Superboy. I found some of the cool 70's issues too, with Frank Robbins writing and Bob Brown and Wally Wood on the art.
70's Batman books (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6554579298&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1) I'm always a sucker for, and the price was right here too. These will actually replace a few I bought off the newsstand and read to pieces when I was a kid.
But the big score of the month for me was this Deadman lot of issues. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6554679451&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1) All I was after was the Baxter reprint books with the Adams stories, but this had not only those but all sorts of other cool stuff too. All for six dollars. I am a happy man today.

Todays small list of back Issues....
Wonder Woman ( vol.1) 300# : I have been eyeing this one awhile. Everytime I hit this antique shop I would look but the price tag was too much. I kept hoping the guy would have a big sale. And hoping....and finally...he did. He slashed prives by half there.
It features a story by Dan Jurgans and host of other creators. Edited by Marv Wolfman the series has Wonder Woman facing a villain from the dream world. The Pre-Crisis Sandman shows up and wants Wonder Woman but her heart lies with one man.
She meets up with her Earth 2 counter part who has aged and married...Steve Trevor. Its there Diana decides its time to marry her Steve Trevor finally. She kills her Diana Prince secret ID and then as the issue wraps and Trevor admits he may have feeling for Diana Prince she decides to bring back her secret id again....
Booster Gold 25# : Booster Gold's final issue as he thinks about leaving this time period. Gold runs into Rip Hunter who tells him he can't get a machine up and running that fast and the Justice League....learns a very important secret about Booster Gold.
Its revealed that Booster must survive because he's the next step in human evolution . That he was destined to come to our time period to do that. This happened during Millenimum so....sorry if it sounds stupied.
The end result was that Dan Jurgans revealed at the end of this that DC told him he could have tried revamping the series and trying a drastic change to make Booster Gold stay a series. But Jurgans said he didn't have the time for it and after 3 years felt it was time to wrap the series.

I met mortari at his show in Gurnee, IL. He's a nice guy and had plenty of cool DVDs available. Here are some back-issues I picked up at the show:
Archie's Girls, Betty and Veronica #59. A visually stunning mid-grade 10-center. It's flat with no spine roll or major creases. As usual, the art is great ... especially Veronica.
6 assorted Marvel G.I. Joe. A little OT, but the seller had a really organized and clean set-up. I wish more comic dealers and sellers followed his example.
13 assorted Defenders from #20-50. I'm working on an inexpensive, low-grade Defenders run from #20-60. After this pick-up I'm about half-way finished, I have all of the 30s and 40s issues now.

Nice Issue. One day Greg It will be yours. I looked for Brave & the Bold 200# for 2 or 3 years and I finally landed It at a Flea Market In great condition.
I have a vague recollection of reading this waaaay back when, when it first came out. As I recall, Batman was framed when the gun went off even though he didn't pull the trigger and the cops went on a manhunt for him. As I recall, it was pretty darn good.
As I may be moving soon, I have the monumental task of going through my comics to see if I can sell/get rid of some of them pre-move. Unfortunately, my collection is in an absolute disarray, partially due to moving a lot over the last 10 years and partially because of laziness/procrastination.
In any event, I'll be going through this stuff over the next several weeks, so if anyone is looking for Marvels in the late 70s through mid-90s, let me know via PM and I'll keep you in mind as I'm digging.

Todays back issue finds!
DC Comics Presents 55# : This features the original Airwave and Superman teaming up. The cover looks good and I like seein Superman follow a guy rollerskating on power lines.
Legion of Superheroes 298#: A great issue in Legeion history as the Legion rushes to stop Duplicate Boy from beatin Colossal Boy down for taking Shrinking Violet from him. Also its features something Nikita will like. It features a preview of Amethyst 1# .
Booster Gold 14# & 20# : In 14 , Booster travels to the future and finds out his mom is dead. And his sister is missing. He and his gf get arrested by the science police now and plans are to exacute him. Rip Hunter also stars in this.
In 20# you get a great cover by Dan Jurgens where you see Booster blinded by the Rainbow Rider. He's stealing pieces of art and Booster finally has to overcome his blindness to talk Rider into saving the art.
DC Secret Origins 40# : Featuring the origin of Gorilla City and Detective Chimp. Nice origin stories . To bad part of DC's origin would be changed now.

Wow. I've come to the conclusion that I have a lot of comics. I spent the better part of last night going through umpteen boxes of comics, just to see what's in there. Tons and tons of stuff, much too much to list here. Like I said, however, if anyone has specific comics they're looking for, let me know. So far, I've been going through a lot of comics from the late 80s to the present. A lot of Marvel, some DC, some Image, some Dark Horse and a smattering of other independents.
It's slow going, but it's mainly because every 20 or so comics, I'll run across something and say, "Hey, I don't even remember buying this!" or, sadly, "Why on Earth did I buy this?"

Here's an eBay score that's not mine, but Julie's. You have to understand, my bride is an ardent Peanuts fan. When we are in San Diego, she spends a great deal of time at the Schulz Museum booth, our home is filled with Charlie Brown and Snoopy stuff, and at a little convention here in town she found this:
http://www.comics.org/graphics/covers/1602/400/1602_4_3.jpg
These are really rare because I believe they are the only times that Schulz allowed anyone other than TV animators to draw actual original stories using his Peanuts characters. They aren't by Schulz, they're all by a guy named Dale Hale, according to the GCD. This particular Gold Key series reprinted stuff that appeared in Four-Color Comics, a Dell/Western/Gold Key enterprise that featured original stories featuring newspaper strip characters. There were two actual U.S. Peanuts newsstand comic book series, one an original series from Dell that spun off Four-Color in 1960, and the other a series of reprint books that came out in 1963 under the Gold Key imprint. This one is from the Gold Key reprint series.
Anyway, all that's the preamble. The point is that yesterday she scored #8 of the Dell version, which doesn't even have a scan available on the GCD. I should probably take it to the printshop one of these days and upload one. She paid $10 for #8, which is pretty good considering that it's FLAWLESS except for a little yellowing, and the guy at the convention charged $18 for the reprint Gold Key one she got earlier, and IT had a little tear on the cover.
She also scored one of the few non-Peanuts Schulz efforts,
"What Was Bugging Ol' Pharoah?" (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=773&item=5992607773#ebayphotohosting) for a ridiculously low price.
So she had a big weekend. Me, I'm still reading through the last haul.

Todays fun Back Issue finds:
Doom Patrol 18# ( Vol.2) : Solid issue as this version of the Doom Patrol closes out as the boring Kuppenburg run would end with the buriel of a team mate and the disclosure that Scott Fischer had leukemi. ( Whatever happened to Scott by the way ? :)
Any at the end even the current writer admits that no one liked the Doom Patrol and that Grant Morrison was coming on to revitlize the Franchise and it was gettin new paper quality and works.
Brave & the Bold 181 # : Batman teams up with Hawk & Dove in the Tale : " Time , See What's Become of Me."
Hawk is angry because him and Dove are no longer close. And the 2 disagreed so much they have trouble being brothers. Hawk's powers are going bad and he accidently causes a man to fall from a building as Batman arrives.
Don ( Dove) is still the peaceful brother who uses his powers to help people. In the end Hank is caught by the drug dealer and his & Don's powers are stripped due to them not accepting each others ideals. Nice tale....
Freedom Fighters 9# : This one features a cool cover as some patriotic hero tells a group of young kids that the Freedom Fighters are : Enemies of America!! No...Not Uncle Sam!!!
Warlord 67# : Mike Grell did this cover and its fantastic. In fact I think its something Bollard used as a template for his classic Wonder Woman cover in WW 72# . The cover looks almost like it in a sense.
Power Man & Iron Fist 121# : In this Secret Wars cross-over issue , Beyonder starts talkin jive ! Yeah , no foolin ! He hangs out with Cage as the 2 eat at a diner. There Beyonder decides to fit in he should be black. Its so freakin funny as he starts doin jive talkin to everyone!
In the end Shield wants to blow up the Beyonders new HQ in Antartica where Beyonder has over 3 Billion people on TV so he can spy on them. Iron Fist doesn't see much wrong with this but The Falcon finds it to be too " Big Brother". Nice back issue.

Hey, believe it or not, they just arrived today -- I made the earlier post from work, and when I got home, there they were on the stoop.
Turns out they're in pretty good shape. I mean, they're 'reader' copies, but the guy made them sound like they'd been left out in the rain. Covers are a little frayed at the corners, and really that's it. And I hadn't really figured on several of the CLASSIC Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams stories that were in here: "Ghost of the Killer Skies," "Vow From The Grave"... I mean, damn. I mostly went after this lot for the 25-cent issues, 414, 417, those ones. I figured, at this flea-market, dollar-bin pricing how could I lose? But this really is a nice score. Even Julie, who doesn't pay that much attention to this sort of thing, was impressed.

Greg saved me the trouble of bringin this thread back and lookin for it. Nice haul as usual Greg. I have a few Infinity Inc issues as well.
Heres my haul this week:
DC Comics Presents 15# ( Whitman tag covers issue number on cover:) : The Atom and Superman team up as Superman learns Ray Palmer can't reduce his size. Jean Loring appears and guess what....she doesn't kill anyone! What a gyp!
Action Comics 571# , 573# , 601# : In 571# , Superman faces a scientist who has stole some chemical from a spector of alien robots. To save thier planet they need it back. This features one hell of an awesome cover by Brian Bollard! Track it down guys..its pretty cool for bein in 1985!
In 573# , Superman learns that J.Wilbur Wolfingham has sold Earth to a interstellor realitor. Yep..he sold Earth to an alien realitor. Its so aburdly funny you have to laugh as at the end Superman helps con the alien in selling Earth back so they can restore all the people.
In more serious comics.....601# features the start of Action Comics Weekly. It has the tragic death of John Stewart's wife Katmu . Sad....
Doom Patrol 1# ( Vol.2) : The Doom Patrol are back! And thier lookin for the Chief. This issue starts the 2nd series which became acclaimed once Grant Morrison revamped it.
Manhunter 13 # ( Vol.2) : This features Mark Shaw as Manhunter. In this Shaw is tryin to make a few bucks doin his bounty huntin gig. He scans the wanted posters and decides to go after Catman at a society gig. Nice read.
Manhunter 1# : This puppy reprints the 8 page stories that appeared in Detective comics in the 1970's. It feaures Paul Kirk as Manhunter and his battle to stop the Council. In the end it has a special issue featurin Batman.
Book comes with Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson introduction to the book. And how it won so many awards back then.
Thor 432# : This features the 350th appearance of Thor in the book. It sounds wonky considering the number but its double-sized n all.

You mean the Manhunter deluxe reprint from the 80's, or the gold metallic paperback from three or four years ago? Either one is nice, but the gold one has a new wordless story by Simonson that Archie Goodwin plotted before he passed away.
I've got a short-list of stuff I'm always looking for at a good price... if you have been following this thread you know what's on it, probably. 70's Batman, pre-Crisis Superboy, any of the 100-page DC Super-Spectacular books, and Savage Sword of Conan, but only if Roy Thomas wrote it. The Conan Saga reprints are fine with me too. So this score (http://cgi.ebay.com/Marvel-Comics-The-Savage-Sword-of-Conan-Magazine-6_W0QQitemZ6561309931QQcategoryZ3971QQcmdZViewItem QQisPrinterFriendlyZ1QQpvZ1) made me pretty happy, even with its rapacious shipping fee. (Normally guys who jack the shipping way up annoy me, but this was such a deal I decided to forgive him.) It's not ALL Roy Thomas, but it is a fair amount, and I think the later ones are from the Chuck Dixon run which wasn't bad either.
This actually gives me two copies of Savage Tales #3, (the conclusion to the original "Red Nails," among other things) so I probably will let one go. Normally when I have dupes they go to my students or trick-or-treaters on Halloween, but this one I think I will trade or sell. Julie thinks we should sell old books we're getting rid of on eBay to offset our back issue habit and I tend to agree. At least the high-end stuff like this.

Blue Devil 16# : This issue see's the Vanquisher ( a new hero created) abduct Marla and think he has some love. Lucky for Blue Devil he regains his mind.
Blue Beetle 7# : Great issue with The Question.
Manhunter 18# & 21# : This is the issue that see's the Government get involved. Along with Dumas ( he plays a big role currently). Mark Shaw goes to Japan as he is forced to do battle against Dumas again. This new Dumas is improved and in 21# he dons Shaw's face. Which is errie for whats happened now.
Flash 92# This features the debut of the current Kid Flash. Yep...Bart Allen , aka Impulse makes his debut here. I was shocked I found it since I gave up hope of ever finding it years earlier.

Incredible Hulk #261, 269, 284, 315
I picked these up for a quarter each in a discount box. I would've bought more, but I bought a pack of smokes right before I wandered into the comic shop. I'll try to pick up several dollars worth of books sometime this week. Hopefully, I'll read some of these issue to my nephew. He's starting to show an interest in both comic characters and reading.
Incredible Hulk #315, written and drawn by John Byrne, has some sentimental value to me. I once bought this issue (as a back-issue) when I was in elementary school.

Captain America 261# & 281# : In 261 , Cap learns that someone is using his former Idenity of the Nomad in California. So he goes there as thier shooting a film of his life story.
In 281# , the Bucky Barnes of the 1950's shows up as Cap is shocked to see him. Ther he tells whats happened thus far to everyone and the Captain America of the 1950's.
Heres a secret...Cap 281# reveals the idenity of this Bucky and its........JACK MONROE. Yep...old sorry Jack shows up and tells his life story and how he's suffered from takin some of the super soldier serum.
Legion of Superheroes Annual 3# : This is part of that horrible Bloodlines cross-over in the early 1990's. This issue helped bring Timber Wolf back to the 30th Century and introduced one of the funniest damn charactors in Bloodlines. Jamm " The Surfin " Man is his name and he has the ability to do mind control.
In a funny storyline he mostly has the LSH listen to him and the female members drop thier clothes. Its freakin silly but I wonder whatever happened to Jamm ?
Superman 397: The return of the Kryptonite man! Ohhh hell yeah. I haven't read it fully but nice Issue.
Detective Comics 524# : Great cover for this. This features the 2nd part of a story that would go on to introduce us to everyones favorite Croc like Villain for Batman. Killer Croc makes his 1st ever appearance in this tale.

Well. We have had to pull back on our back-issue hunting because we needed to be able to fly to Atlanta for Darkblade's wedding... but I DID score almost the entire 29-issue run of the Marvel version of Tarzan from the 70's, with only the two annuals and issue #21 missing, for $16. A quick search on eBay turned up the two annuals for 99 cents.
Now, THAT was a series that took a nosedive. The first half of the run, with Roy Thomas scripting and John Buscema drawing, was a thing of beauty; Buscema was born to draw this kind of macho jungle adventure and clearly he thought so too -- the early issues, he was inking his own stuff and my GAWD it was gorgeous. As if Hal Foster was drawing Steve Canyon. Like so:
http://www.comics.org/graphics/covers/2408/400/2408_4_01.jpg
And Thomas was doing some of his best scripting ever, mostly adapting Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar but also managing to incorporate lots of other Burroughs works in there, making the whole thing a huge sprawling 11-issue epic.
Sadly, the good times didn't last. Thomas and Buscema left and Dave Kraft turned in some really convoluted stories, and Sal Buscema did an okay art job but was crippled by terrible inking. Then Bill Mantlo took over the scripting and did a little better than Kraft, but not MUCH better, and the book kind of stuttered to a stop. Pity.
Still, the Roy Thomas/John Buscema stuff is brilliant. I'd recommend those to anyone. The rest is just... generic Marvel 70's action. Not BAD, but... meh. But I'm tickled to have it all anyway.
Now I'm on the prowl for Marvel's John Carter of Mars that was coming out at the same time.

Well. We have finally started to come out from under the cloud of illness and financial stress that characterized the last four or five weeks around here. And my lovely bride told me to go ahead and score some loot on eBay for my birthday... so I dropped about twenty bucks on this nice little run of Savage Sword, (http://cgi.ebay.com/20-Marvel-Conan-Magazines_W0QQitemZ6579703918QQcategoryZ35773QQcmd ZViewItemQQisPrinterFriendlyZ1QQpvZ1), and this three-fer (http://cgi.ebay.com/BATMAN-JUSTICE-LEAGUE-OF-AMERICA-COMIC-BOOK-LOT_W0QQitemZ6580471601QQcategoryZ33808QQcmdZViewI temQQisPrinterFriendlyZ1QQpvZ1) of JLA, Batman, and Brave & Bold. If the Justice League is the one I think it is, a story of Amazo stealing half the powers of the League, I'll be especially delighted, because that was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. The time would be about right -- Wein & Dillin, early 70's. But I love those 100-pagers anyway. And the Batman/Shadow book is one I've been prowling for, for at least six or eight years. I snagged the sequel at a convention here in the 90's but I never see the first one for under $20, which is too much for me. So getting it for under a buck made me positively giddy.
Although truthfully just getting to surf eBay with a few bucks to spend made me happy. I am blessed with a wife who understands me.

So Julie had to work today and left me the car. I had a few dollars. I was indexing my books yesterday and going over the Want List Book; this is a sort of advanced version of the one I made up for my wife at her request for SDCC a few months ago. It turned out to be such a wonderfully convenient thing that I kept upgrading and adding to it, and finally took it to the printshop and bound it. ...Why, yes, I AM a big nerd.
Anyway. Today I'm sitting around with nothing to do, tidying up the bedroom, and I find this coupon from Arcane Comics that Julie saved from some show we were at, with a map to the place and 50% off back issues. It's a ways north of us, up in Ballard, but hey, I have the car. And a little spending money. And free time. And I've been indexing so I have been reminded of all the different gaps in the collection.
Well, now. I just gassed up the car for Julie and dropped another $40 on her insulin test strips so I'm feeling virtuous. I figure, I'll just buzz up to Ballard and see what he's got, see if I can't stop up a few gaps.... for half-price, BWAHAHA!
Turns out... not much. One 70's Detective I was mildly interested in, a couple of Brave & Bolds, and an Infinity Inc. And when the proprietor regretfully informed me the coupon had expired -- oops; I'd been so busy trying to decipher the map that I forgot to check to see if the deal was still good-- I promptly revised the shopping list downward. Otherwise I'd have cleaned him out of all five.
I ended up just spending six dollars and getting these two:
http://comics.org/graphics/covers/1098/400/1098_4_122.jpg
The story's pretty goofy, as Haney's usually were, but I love the Jim Aparo art, especially from this era when he was inking and lettering too. I am after all the Aparo B&B's and have most of them, but this one had eluded me for a while.
And this:
http://comics.org/graphics/covers/2833/400/2833_4_47.jpg
I have been working on replacing my Infinity, Inc. run from the 80's for a while now; thankfully, I had most of it before Infinite Crisis/Power Girl hysteria hit eBay. But this one I didn't have. As Millennium crossovers go it's pretty good. Actually I think that may have been one of those DC mini's where almost all the crossover/tie-in stories were better than the big series they were tying into.
Anyway. Six bucks, an expired coupon, and a nice drive to a neighborhood we never get to. Not bad for an otherwise dull Saturday.

My best back issue find was at a car boot sale. I found a box with random comic books in it. As I was flicking through I noticed that there were loads of Spider-Man 2099 issues in there. So naturally I grabbed them as quickly as I could and put them to one side scouring the rest of the box. I managed to pick up issues #2 to #43 except #39. And all I payed for them was £3.50!! BARGAIN!! I did however pop into my local comic shop about two weeks ago in search of issue #1 and #39 and the rest that I needed to complete my series. I found issue #39 in the 25p box!! What a score! So I'm now searching for #43 onwards and #1! Still couldn't believe my luck! And the best part was they were in quite good condition as well!

I have a few Infinity Inc issues. I got issue 50# and the annual. But this looks good Greg.

Speaking of back issues, Cronin asked me to talk about them as a regular contributor to his Comics Should Be Good website, so you'll probably find me gloating over the latest finds over there on Fridays. Like here. (http://goodcomics.blogspot.com/2005/12/friday-in-black-and-white.html)

I'll fish them out if I can find them. The Annual 1# has Jade and Todd meeting thier mom and Alan Scott marries. Its a shock..I can't remember a X-Mas layaway but remember an old comic from the 1980's I haven't read in a long....long time.

I haven't gotten to it yet.
Move back from dorm for winter break, work, organize my long box and a few others to get to.
I heard that it was a great story so had to see if the comic shop had it. Luckily it had 3 in the back issue room.
But one comic it doesn't have that I want it Thor #385. I hear the Thor-Hulk fight in it is a good one so I have been trying to get it for monthes but haven't found it.

Christmas Sale and Party at the local comic shop yesterday.
Only spend a couple of bucks.
The Uncensored Mouse #1 - Eternity Comics, B&W reprints of the first Mickey Mouse Newspaper Strips.
Kolchak, Tales of the NightStalker #2 - Moonstone comics. I want to start collecting this, but the 3.50 cover price is scary.
Green Hornet 1-14, Now Comics - I had these and sold these back when I had my comic shop. I may have to keep this set. I still have most of the mini series from this run, I just need to find vol. 2

I still can't quite believe I got it this cheap, especially after waxing so rhapsodic about these on the weblog the other day. 24 dollars for seventeen books from a favorite series of mine, Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, that normally averages between 8-13 dollars PER ISSUE on the back-issue market online. Even with shipping it's still well under two dollars a book. I watched it like a hawk for most of the day, swooped in during the last twenty minutes and GOT IT. Issue #'s 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, and 21.
Somewhere some other collector hates my guts. But I don't care. Because I WON! HAHAHAHA!

It often gets mistaken for #1, which it's not -- it was a one-shot special.
I'm still gloating. The entire run of this book (http://comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=2161) is my current hunt now, and I already had four of them -- #1, #24, #26, and #30. This score takes me well over the half-way point, but I think this is going to be a one-time thing. Normally I do a search and the book usually shows up as single issues priced around $11 each. That's out of bounds; for eBay our rule is no more than $2 a book, and in lots of three or more. That keeps shipping low, the hunt remains a challenge, and also keeps me out of trouble with my bride.
The other run I am on the hunt for is Planet of the Apes, (http://comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=2185) but that's even more expensive. They're a lot harder to find than the Conan books were, or even Deadly Hands books. So hunting for these should keep me entertained for a while.

My GAWD but I'm having a great week.
The last of my recent Conan Saga/Savage Sword wins arrived in the mail today, and also this one that I forgot to mention earlier...
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d15/GregHatcher/starfawn.jpg
The late Byron Preiss, who published so much sheer goodness over the last thirty years, was one of those guys in the 70's who was really, really trying to expand comics as a form. Two of my favorite projects of his were Weird Heroes, (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1286/468/1600/Weird%20Heroes.jpg) trying to revive illustrated pulp fiction with a modern spin, and "Fiction Illustrated," trying to do new things with comics. I bought the entire run of Weird Heroes as it was coming out, in the 70's, but Fiction Illustrated is a hell of a lot harder to track down. The first two were about the size of an Archie digest, with really teeny-tiny print and on not-very-good paper. So for volumes three and four Preiss did something crazy -- in addition to the digest-size books he also printed them as 10x13 trade paperbacks, charged $4.95 for them (about triple what a paperback book was going for then) and called them -- wait for it -- "graphic novels." I had the third (http://www.comicon.com/pulse/images/chandler.jpg) and fourth (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6588313362&indexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting) in this series in the big deluxe format, and lost them in a move years ago. I periodically search eBay for them, it's one of my ongoing hunts -- but the first and second in the series, I never was able to track down at all. Until I scored #2, "Starfawn," for 2.99 a few weeks ago and it arrived in the mail today. I started looking for this almost thirty years ago. Finally here. Haven't read it yet but I can tell you the art by Stephen Fabian is GORGEOUS. It's criminal this was published at the size it was on this crappy paper. Some smart publisher should see if it could be re-issued, since, despite what Will Eisner and Steranko were arguing about, really THIS predates both of them as 'first graphic novel.' Nobody but Preiss should be getting credit for that. Not only did he invent the form but I'm pretty sure he invented the expression, too.
Anyway. It's here and I'm happy.

Its been awhile but heres my latest back issue finds. Here ya go....
Power Girl #1 of ( 4) : This features Karen Starr as PG went by then. It was out soon after Crisis and it was expanding on the Secret Origins #11 issue that had PG's origin as Arion's daughter sent into the future.
Its been since retconned and all. But its a good read as we see her heading up her own company and facing a threat from the past.
Action Comics Weekly #636 : This features a fantastic cover of the late Phantom Lady. Yep...the dearly departed PL who died in Identity Crisis.
Jonah Hex #41: This is a great cover as Hex is walking up on 2 fugitives. The woman tells her man to shoot Hex.
Nightmask #1 : This is the New Universe , Jim Shooter created. Its a great read as the hero can sleep and get thru dreams of people. He even nails the person resposnible for his parents deaths.
Red Tornado #2 & #3 : This mini-series is by Kurt Busiek in the mid 80's. A good read where Red near turns against humanity due to the work of Construct. It features a new origin as well for Red Tornado.

I don't really care about grade -- I just want them to read -- but still, you just don't see that low of a price on these, it worked out (with shipping) to be about sixty cents a book.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d15/GregHatcher/KungFuWin.jpg
Lots of the regular color run too. I have been curious about Shang-Chi's book ever since someone told me it tied into James Bond as well as Fu Manchu, which gets me right in my OCD Wold-Newton (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=101017)-loving soul, so I'm looking forward to seeing these books as well. Couple of nice little scores this week This one was another one on eBay -- 99 cents for these three:
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d15/GregHatcher/GoldKeyWin.jpg
The Tarzan's the one I really wanted, though the TZ books look like fun and I will probably enjoy them. What's interesting about this is that it's Tarzan #206, which was the LAST Gold Key issue. #207 was when the title switched over to DC. The lot shown above arrived today, too, which was a huge hunk of Joe Kubert Tarzan goodness starting with #209. So I'm kind of working my way back.
In other back-issue news, Sunday I was getting really fed up with all the various brouhahas going on around here and the way I kept getting snarled up in them, so my lovely bride suggested we go for a drive. We ended up in Snohomish, (http://www.cityofsnohomish.com/)one of those little rustic towns that pepper the Northwest between us and Canada. Snohomish is full of antique dealers and we were just wandering around when we saw, in this one shop, a bunch of old Marvel magazines from the black-and-white heyday. This is, of course, my current thing. I had most of what was there -- Conan, mostly -- but there were a couple that made me sit up straight. One I bought, the other I passed on, regretfully. Guy was pricing the stuff too high.
The one I bought was Bizarre Adventures #27, (http://comics.org/details.lasso?id=35481) the one about the X-Men. Because this one you just never see, anywhere, ever. Guy had it at six and discounted it to four. I decided what the hell, it's on the high side of reasonable, I'll never see it again, and paid it. It's pretty good; the non-Claremont stuff is the best, oddly enough. There's a fun little Iceman story drawn by George Perez that I liked a lot.
The one I passed on was something I'd never heard of or seen before. Now, my favorite comic-book superhero series of all time was Manhunter by Goodwin and Simonson. I was thrilled when DC collected it in the 80's as part of their deluxe Baxter reprint line, and even MORE delighted when the nice trade paperback with the new story came out in 1999.
I had thought the 80's book was the first time it was collected, but I was wrong. There was an earlier trade paperback. And it didn't really look like it came from DC. I've since done a little digging and it was apparently published in 1979 through an outfit called Excalibur, run by Roger Slifer. It has not only the introduction Goodwin wrote that's been reprinted in the other collections, but also an afterword, where Goodwin acknowledged the debt "Cathedral Perilous" owed to Will Eisner, and these pieces were illustrated by photos of Walt Simonson's original design sketches for Manhunter. The book was in black-and-white with a color cover, a nice squarebound paperback that originally went for $8.95. The guy wanted fifteen for it, which was over the allowance we'd given ourselves for the day, so I let it go. Seemed silly when I already have the one with the gold cover. But those extras would have been nice; not fifteen dollars' worth of nice, but still, nice.

Huh. I've been nosing around on the web, thinking that if I could find that Manhunter book for cheap (Like, under $5) I'd grab it; but as far as I can tell the only person that actually has seen this book other than me and, presumably, the people that worked on it, is Larry Young from Ait/PlanetLar. And he's not letting HIS go.
Must've had a print run of, like, 200. Comics are harder but it usually only takes me an hour or so to find out who's got a used book I'm interested in. But nobody has it; none of the used-book searches I use can turn up anything other than the 1999 and 1984 editions.
Now it's a challenge.
Yes, it's a disease. Pity me.

Each thing leads to the next, it feels like. I got interested in the original Shang-Chi after reading his adventures in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, and also I had picked up the new Max mini from a couple of years ago and liked that. Besides that, Shang-Chi figures as a minor player in Win Eckert's new Wold Newton collection of essays (http://pjfarmer.com/bimages/myths.jpg) that I just finished (great fun in a geeky continuty-freak way -- recommended!) and I hadn't realized before how neatly MOKF dovetails with that whole shared universe, something I've been interested in since the 6th grade. So I added the color comics run to my list of Things To Hunt For, and I've nailed a nice couple of wins the last couple of weeks. That festival of funnybooks up there you see in that panoramic view set me back $4.01. Even with shipping it's still less than forty cents a book. And no duplicates to any I already have.
It's ridiculous how happy this makes me. I'm such a cheap date.

I'm such a cheap date.
congrats, this is one of my favorite series', and i'm particularly partial to the mordillo arc and the issues surrounding it 30-40. the gulacy arc in this stretch is beautiful as always and the james bond like stories were great. enjoy!

There was a card show near work today so I hit it and found a few back issue buys. My persuit of Avengers from 200 to 500 continues ! :p
Avengers #203,# 208 , #210 ,#381-382: Haven't got to read these yet. But these slide into the missing slots in my Avengers back issue collection.
Captain Marvel #62 ( Vol.1) : Has a great cover as Stellerax attacks ! Nice way to have the price and letterhead :)
Web of Spiderman #12 : This one has a great cover as Mary-Jane is opening the door to Peter's apartment talking as Peter has the black costume and is outside the window as a guy with a gun waits on MJ to enter the apartment. Really stylistic I think.
Secret Origins #4 : The origin of...( drumroll....) FIRESTORM ! :D

Powerman & Iron Fist #48,#88,#94 & #118: Found these back issues at a store. I really like #48 being the near start of the Power Man and Iron Fist teamup series.
The Brave & the Bold #157: This is a cool looking cover. Kamandi has came from the Future to teamup with Batman ! Ohhh hell yeah. :)
Doom Patrol #3-#4 : This features the late 80's Doom Patrol. I have issues 1 & 2 so now I have a small run of 1-4 now.
Hex #17: Is the horrible series that took Jonah Hex into the future with the LSH lol.
American Flagg #23: Nice story by Chaykin as Flagg goes to Britian on some kinda deal by Plex. He gets noticed by some people as Mark Thrust and its all fun. Nice paper and all for a comic in 1985 !

This sounds so bad that it is awesome. Kinda like Miller/MacFarlane Spawn/Batman...:D
