I left Smallville long time ago.
I preferred Lois & Clark, until that clone crap killed the story.

Why is he great?
Because he's Superman. There really isn't anything else that needs to be added.

Yes, Superman is great!!
"What sets Superman apart from all those who came before and after him, is that he is the personification of the most deeply rooted human belief there is: that there are gods in this world, and if we pray to them, they might help. The wonder of Superman is, that when we ask for HIS help in fighting something so big or dangerous that we poor humans can only fail, he shows up and helps. Instantly. On time. And everybody lives at the end of the story. He is god in a cape. The living answer to our prayers."

One thing superman can't satisfy though is the drive of modern people who
"Loves to see a hero fall, because it makes them feel better about themselves"
So I guess real-life people hate supes because he makes them seem inferior.

Fair call. Seasons 2, 3, 4 were tragic, however 5 and 6 were solid (though I didnt like the LuthOr/Zod vessel (being a tragic Zod fan) and I've since returned to the series in season 8. Doomsday has created that interest.
L&C was fantastic, though the lack of "action" in it was a huge let down. The show was based around love which just didnt cut it for me. Season 4 was pathetic as well, just couldnt get into 1. H.G Wells, and 2. Lord Nor (absolute rubbish).

I'm not a big fan, but I respect the idea of Superman, not only was he the first and only breakthrough super hero, he is the primary and definitive icon for justice and morality as well as the god of heroes. Clark is one of a kind, he's the most powerful being of all the superheroes and one of the most infleuncial, but he never brags about it and he never takes advantage, he's humble and kind and honorable and views people not as his servants but as equals and friends. Personally I'd prefer Spidey and Bats over Supes, but I like Superman because he's kinda like the american dad of superheroes, responsible and always very wise about everything.
As for the franchise, I only got into 3 Superman comics, because usually the cartoon brought me to Superman, you got your stroy which is probably the basic default for any fictional adventure about a moral human hero. Parents find kid, kid grows up with morals, and kid becomes a hero with problems coping and villains. Theres alot of tension between clark and his relationship with others. Lex Luthor sees him as a freak, Lois loves him but treats him like shit, he is best buds with Jimmy, and Supes meets other superheroes like Batman and Wonder Woman all of them being friends.
Without Superman, there'd be no stand point of heroics or values that so many heroes incorperate today, like Goku for example. I'm glad Superman is here because he's the man that started it all.

Being superman is what everyone expect to be. He is good, he beat bad guys saves innocents etc., and mostly he can fly anywhere and save anyone from evil and hence is great !!
