My friend Fred recently called me to tell me that his grandma and grandpa were cleaning out their attic so that it didn't have to be done "when the time comes," and apparently came across a copy of the Philadelphia Record (a newspaper) from 1945. In it, an intact "Spirit Section." It is from Sunday December 16, 1945 and is the story of Derry Mortlock. Now, my friend said I could simply have this if I just wrote a thank you note to his grandma, since he knows I really like The Spirit. I did, and now the comic is in my possession. It has a few notes written on it (as comics from the day commonly have), but is otherwise still in readable condition! Here's a pic.

To me, this thing is priceless, but my girlfriend keeps bugging me to "get it appraised." I have no idea how much anyone would even want to pay a dollar for it, but it's more of a once in a lifetime find for me. Anyone's thoughts?

Spirit Sections are great! Looks to be worth $10-20.

These sorts of things are woefully undervalued. I, myself, was lucky enough to come across an ebay auction of 12 clipped Batman comics from 1940s newspapers. It includes the first eleven chapters of Joker's first appearance in newspapers. Imagine -- the first time non-comic book readers ever heard of the Joker. I believe the starting bid on the auction was $19, and no one else bid. It's currently framed and on my wall.

These priceless finds should be worth hundreds, but they're just not. For some reason, there's practically no demand, which is fine with me. I don't think either of us is ever planning on selling our finds, anyway.
