I just read it and really liked it. Although, some things I felt was a little unbelievable, even in a comic book world. I guess *spoilers.*

Like when Batman and Robin come out of the sewer and half of Gotham is evacuated without them knowing.... how long were they down there? How easy is it to evacuate Gotham?

But overall, it was a good read. Does the Deacon ever come back?

The Cult is great; a forgotten gem; I respect people at batfans if they have read it. But IGN gave it its due props though in its 25 greatest Batman GN list.

I didn't find anything unbelievable by standard comic fare.

Deacon did not come back. I believe he's been referenced briefly though. Not sure I'd want him back; unless maybe it was Starlin.

Yeah, that's a fantastic gem that pushed me to seek out and read Starlin's entire run. Some of my favorite Batman artwork as well.

It also featured a rare moment when Jason Todd was likeable and useful.

Yeah, Jim Starlin's run was mostly pretty poor, but The Cult was good.

Yeah, i completely agree with this. I wasn't aware there was any redeeming stories with him in it but this is actually one of the first stories I've read where i actually felt Robin needed to be in the story as opposed to the writers just throwing him in there. Who knew Jason Todd ever did anything worthwhile besides dying?

Starlin's run certainly deserves to be right there on the shelf with my other great Batman works. Particularly the Cult. It was that good.

Jason's other glorious moment was in Alan Moore's classic "For The Man Who Has Everything" storyline, in which Jason was instrumental in saving Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman from Mongul.

But the thing is, in both "The Cult" and "For The Man...," Jason was portrayed almost as if he were Dick Grayson's Robin. He wasn't characteristically Jason Todd in either story.

I agree. I like the characterization building up with Jason before his death. The Starlin "dumpster killer" storyline deserves to be collected somewhere.

Wouldn't it be a trip if at the end of RIP, we find out that the Black Glove is none other than Deacon Blackfire?

I'd be stupefied if that were the case, honestly. Blackfire "broke" Batman *years* before Bane accomplished it.

Exactly!

Nice way to bring everything back full circle.

The Cult is an amazing story, easily one of my favourite Batman stories. I'm surprised that this has become a forgotten tale.

The Cult is rarely mentioned these days. I remember Amanda Waller mentioning it in a confrontation with Batman in the 80's Suicide Squad series.

You guys are mean! Jason had a number of neat moments. Even Post-Crisis carjacker Jason.

I don't remember Cult very well anymore, but I know I liked it when I read it. I pretty much loved every Bat story Jim Starlin wrote.

This is one of my favorite Batman stories from the past 20 years, but it was only recently that I found out that Starlin and Wrightson wanted to do a sequel. DC said no and so the two turned the idea into a Punisher four-parter called Punisher: POV.

There's a line in The Cult in which Bruce Wayne admits to Robin that the idea that he became the Batman to avenge his parents deaths was a lie. "I really did it to overcome the fear". Apparently, the fall into the Bat-Cave Bruce Wayne experienced when he was six traumatized him enough to instill a fear of bats into his mind. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this idea was taken from The Cult and woven into Batman Begins.
