I think he's more of a plagiarisation of Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde really...

He's also the end result of countless monster comics that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby wrote prior to the Fantastic Four, Fing Fang Foom, Xemmu, Gloom, Googam son of Goom etc. etc.

Take all that, slam it together with a superhero comic and out comes that Hulk, ready to smash.

I believe the story goes that he's a mix of Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein.

The former for being a "dark side" of sorts to Banner that Banner transforms into.

The latter for being a destructive, misunderstood member of society.
