Seriously. If you are a fan of Street Fighter, you absolutely must get this title. Today, tomorrow, sometime in the foreseeable future, GET THIS TITLE. Here are some thoughts and spoilers:
Every single scene and moment in this issue was just spot on. The beginning was a real treat for the long time readers of the series, as Ryu confronts all of the Street Fighters he has encountered so far, such as Sagat, Adon, Balrog, Dhalsim, and Gen, as well as relives some pretty powerful moments, like Gouken's death at the hands of Akuma. I liked the contemplative aspect of this scene, as Ryu asks himself some very deep and contemplative questions, the main one being what he has learned through all of these fights. Evil Ryu's fight with Ken was absolutely perfect and loved the premiere of the Shoryu Reppa. Furthermore, even in the midst of such a powerful scene, there was a little bit of humor. Loved the fact that Ryu was somewhat inept in the usage of a cell phone.
The Cammy scene was fantastic. Not only was it a homage to Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, but I definitely found Cammy's snapping of the neck of the U.S. official to be quite relevant to recent events in U.S. politics. Nice to see that Vega is making his moves against Cammy as well.
I felt that Chun-Li training with Yun and Yang was very heart-warming. Indeed, I think we're starting to see the motherly aspects of Chun-Li come out. Practicing with Yun and Yang on the Wing Chun dummies, advising how the two could improve their techniques, I really like how UDON has been consistent in their portrayal of the Chinese fighters. There's a real sense of family amongst them all.
Bison's dream sequence foreshadows some nice developments and hints perhaps of a future appearance by a character who may not be so dead afterall.
Totally freaked out when Bison showed the might of his psycho power by destroying Easter Island. This was a great scene and it goes to show the true might and power of Shadoloo. Indeed, I really appreciate that UDON is giving a lot of depth to Shadoloo by showing that they are truly this destructive and awesome evil organization who cannot and should not be taken lightly.
The HOLY CRAP scene of this entire issue, however, definitely had to be the last two pages. Indeed, turns out that the tournament's preliminary matches will be held in three locations, each overseen by a Shadoloo Warlord. Sagat will host the Chinese branch in Hong Kong, Vega will host Japanese branch in Osaka, and Balrog will host the U.S. branch in....wait for it...
METRO CITY!!!!!!!!!! This reveal is made only sweeter when the last page is a splash page showing a certain Metro City staple being hauled off to jail for fighting. That's right kids, CODY will be making an appearance in this tournament!!!
Loved the back up story. Shed a lot of light one of the new SFIV characters Abel who appears to have a certain connection with...wait for it again...
CHARLIE NASH!!!
As you can see this issue was monumentality fantastic. Artwork was dynamic and exciting and the writing was stellar. UDON is just writing a fun and compelling story that not only delves deeply into the Street Fighter mythos but takes these basic components and builds upon them. Please, PLEASE, pick up this comic book. Trust me, you will not regret it.
