Not bad so far.
I know that Gates is new to writing comics and I'm hoping that things pick up a little more as he gets settled.

Supergirl doesn't matter.
Why not?
I mean such a bold statement deserves specificity.

No, they just expanded on what they did in Action Comics # 869 but they gave an explanation for her erratic behavior mood swings, the crystals growing out her when damaged and her memory issues.
Spoiler:
Kryptonite poisoning

PLOT:
Supergirl's life as Kryptonian-human relations are strained even further! The turmoil forces Supergirl to make a terrible decision: does she stand with the Kryptonians, the people she's longed to be reunited with, or with the humans, the race she's sworn to protect? On top of that, one of her greatest foes is reactivated with a burning hatred for anyone from Krypton – Rao help us all!
REVIEW:
"Action" #871 gave us the conclusion of the Superman/Supergirl/New Krypton vs. Doomsday fight from the previous issue of "Superman", and provide focuses on other things that will and have to be brought back and talked about as this story continues: Zod's soldiers and the hopes of freeing Zod, Luthor, Lane and Brainiac, and finally who is Nightwing and Flamebird? This is a Superman event, and it really feels like one, no question. Now it is on "Supergirl" this time, and her POV on what's been going on between those she loves and those she protects. Let's check out "Supergirl" #35!
The latest entry in "New Krypton" goes from the story itself and Superman's side, now onto Supergirl's POV and her situation. First things first, maybe what Sterling decided, or just an example of Geoff Johns' being the main guy in charge, this issue didn't feel like just a Supergirl issue that just happened to be touching on the "New Krypton" event. As more proof that "Supergirl" was more being inline with the other Superman books, and this event at large, this felt like part 5 of the event. There was a strong link between this and the last issue, just like "Action" and "Superman", that wasn't like a big change between writers and artists. Just something I wanted to say...again.
The scene that was previewed days before the release of this issue was the beginning with Kara's mother, Alura, dismissing Kara's secret identity, even breaking her glasses, and suggesting for the safety she should go back to Kandor. Scenes like that could be seen in two different ways: from the POV of mothers, and the POV of daughters. Conflicts between mothers and daughters have been discussed, seen, and brought up since the beginning of time (those who lived during the '70s will remember the book "My Mother/My Self: The Daughter's Search for Identity" by Nancy Friday), so this was no exception since Kara's mother is new to Earth and there would be a conflict, if not conflicts, between what Kara knows and what Alura is concerned of and everything she has yet to know about. This also being added onto a bigger conflict that is "New Krypton". More scenes between Kara and Alura similar are expected as this event continues.
But perhaps the biggest and important aspect, from this issue was something I figured Geoff had his finger on: the explanation behind Kara's changing and altering origin. We all know the problem: first her origin was the simple one of her going to Earth to protect Kal-El, then it was thought that she was actually sent to kill Kal-El, and then it just went back and forth in more ways than a few. Here, I think we got that cleared up. Kara's origin IS the one where she was sent to protect Kal-El, and revealed in "Brainiac", she left when Brainiac saw and took Kandor as his latest bottled city. So why was this confusing? Two words: kryptonite poisoning. Her rocket was embedded in that kryptonite meteor that was going to threaten Earth if you remember from the "Public Enemies" arc from "Superman/Batman". Her exposure made her memories change, and her body altered, such as bleeding at times when kryptonians shouldn't have been hurt, and of course the changing origins. That was the explanation, and you know what? I like this one.
Overall, this issue goes from Superman's, and the world's POV, and now goes to Supergirl and her story and side of things. Mother/daughter troubles are most likely going to happen once again, as the story continues to move forward, even to the upcoming dark areas. The biggest thing from this issue was the explanation to Kara's changing origins and problems we as readers have had on the character for so long. What the problem was happened to be a nice way of explaining and still keeping the problems for this diagnosis, and nothing like retcons where they would say it didn't happen, or ignore it. So all that was fine. Plus, we get our first introduction to the character of Superwoman. Who she is happens to still be a mystery, but many of us figure she is Kara's old friend, and the fact that her introduction took place on New Krypton seems to lead toward that theory as the correct answer.
RATING: Yay
Next Issue: "Superman" #682! The unrest between the Kryptonians and humankind rapidly spin out of control. Superman knows it's only a matter of time before widespread violence breaks out between the two cultures. But deep in the heart of the U.S. military, a deadly new Squad K is being organized. Its mission: clean up the "Kryptonian problem" before it gets out of hand!

That makes absolutely no sense. Given how many times Superman has been exposed to kryptonite, you'd think he would be growing crystals out of his body too. Really this sounds like another silly fanboy retcon to explain away the backstory established by the previous writers, but not suprising considering the source, a writer that managed to write one of the worst GL stories since Hal's Return.

Beat me to it.
This was the first issue of Supergirl I'd bought since Loeb left for Marvel...I don't see myself picking the series up beyond New Krypton, but it's good to see her confusing and ambiguous origin finally cleared up....if only marvel could do the same for the Sentry....or you know, kill him.

How could she suffer kryptonite exposure if she was shielded and protected by that ship. And Superman may not have been exposed for such a long duration, but he has received large doses of K-radiation from Metallo, Kryptonite Man, Titano, Conduit and god knows how many other lunatics in his Rogues Gallery.

You can only sheild a ship from known radiation. They didn't know what Kryptonite was, it wasn't created until krypton exploded and even then they didn't know what to do.

Didn't you see that crack in the window that alien thing made on her ship when it tried to attack her and was wrestling with her father? The radiation probably got in there slowly over time.
