View Full Version : A news trend that bothers the heck of me...

I've gotten to the point that I rarely ever turn on my tv. My PC is where I work and where I rest. When I want news, I go to a news website almost always. It seems like lately, every time I see an issue I want to read about, I am forced to watch a video. I don't mind it so much when it contains clips from a speech or special gathering. But it seems to me that just to get basic headlines anymore, I've got to watch some anchor spell it out to me. Of course that also means that I have to watch a 15-second commercial. Heck, if I wanted that I'd watch television.

I don't have 4 minutes to watch a news anchor give me what a series of bullet points could give me much faster. But with cnn.com and some others, I have to click the link, find the "text only" version (which often isn't even available) then make another click to get what I want.

Anyone have any recommendations for a good news website that is all text-based? I will stick it in my favorites and wash my hands of the webcasts.

You might be better off hitting NYTimes.com or another of the print media sites -- if you're looking at cnn.com, etc. you have to figure that they're shilling for their broadcast channels, since that's where their main revenue stream is.

Google News. Just find the official newspaper sites/wire service sites that ran a story on the issue you're interested in.

I hate all the videos too. My last job allowed for a fair amount of browsing, but the computers all had sound disabled. It seemed like 75% of the time the story I wanted to read about was a video.

I find bbc to be pretty good for international news.
