Does anyone have any thoughts they would like to share about the anime or manga?

Only that, going by what I've heard about EL, I'm staying the hell away from both.
I'm sure it's not bad, but it definitely doesn't sound like my kind of thing.

The anime seems like something you would appreciate(excessive violence and gore aside, it does have a good, intricate plot). It at least has a happy ending.
The manga---well, you've heard of or read a series called Saikano, right?

You just sold me on the anime and I just placed an order on Amazon.
I don't usually read manga so I haven't heard of it. I know this is shallow of me but I just can't get into black and white comics. I've tried many times over the years but just can't do it.

Isn't it awefully dark over-all, though?
I mean, I can handle violence and gore, but only when it happens to people or things that deserve it.

Heard of. Most likely won't read.

I love dark tales if they are short which Elfen is. In longer shows I would hate it for being too depressing.

It has some bright moments that offsets the gloom somewhat. God bless Nyuu, Nana and little Mayuu(who you'd swear was a relative of Shinobu's). Then there's the touching--abeit twisted--romance between the male and female lead.

Weeeeell, all I can is that there *are* people whom die that *do* deserve it, and leave it that(too bad that molesting bastard of a step-father avoided the wanton slaughters; how I loathed him).

I feel the same way about manga. If manga was colored, I'd probably collect it with the same gutso that I collected Marvel and DC comics in the early-to-mid 90s... because it is well-written (I own a couple volumes of Bleach, and I've read a bit of Ranma, Negima!, and Love Hina! - manga storylines do tend to be a bit richer than their accompanying anime storylines, with maybe a few exceptions).
As for Elfen Lied... it's lack of a genuine "fighting protagonist" in a highly violent/gorey anime made it hard, if not impossible, for me to get into. My feelings are the other side of the coin that Ghost brought up - I can't get into brutal violence unless there's somebody in the fight that I feel is worth rooting for. I don't mind if it's two largely likeable characters (say... Kazuma and Ryuho in S-Cry-ed) kicking each other's butts, but if it's two non-comedic monsters... I just can't get into it.
On the other hand, Elfen Lied's "slice of life" content (which is close to 50% of it, from what I've seen and heard) is pretty good. I almost kept watching Elfen Lied for this alone.

Elfen Lied is guts, fanservice and mix of comedy harem with science fiction madness. It's not notorious for its OTTness but it's not "yeah awesome!" level. I like it though.
Saikano kills it to death IMHO.
