I'll nominate the New York Dolls' two albums, NYD and Too Much Too Soon. But do they qualify? Is so, why? If not, why not?

God I fuckin hate lists sometimes! I say this you say that, Jesus!! But I know I fall for the crap too often as well. But damnit I gotta vent! These friggen top 10 or top 50 lists are frickin pointless! Just another thing to get people to argue, but we disguise it as healthy debate.
OK I'm done now. Continue your lists. I think another anger management counselor is looking for me.

Or it could be useful for, you know, having people discuss bands that they actually like and helping to inform those who are ignorant about some potentially enjoyable albums.

Yeah I know. Sometimes I just gotta rant. Especially when I see all these best/worst lists on TV or other media. I gets out of hand. I will admit this type of forum is conducive for debate.

I don't mean to derail but I had been wanting to see Ted Leo forever and I finally got to see him open up for Against Me, and I was completely underwhelmed ... and I think the man is great.

I wish I could've gotten to see this tour. I've only recently been getting into Against Me!
I saw him for free over the summer, and I thought he was pretty fun. He played a cover of the Misfits' "Hybrid Moments" which made me wanna start rocking out on my guitar as soon as I got home.

I think for whatever reason he canceled his tour dates may have been affecting him when he rolled through Chicago. He had tons of energy, but his set just seemed kinda flat. It could also have been this really lame-ass opening band that generated no excitement.
Against Me! is one of the greatest live shows I've seen, and if you get the chance to see them, do so.

That sucks. Do you remember who opened?
I'm really enjoying the crap out of Against Me!'s As the Eternal Cowboy, as well as all the acoustic stuff before. I assume they played a lot of stuff off of New Wave, right?

Wait a second, people actually consider Against me & Ted Leo as punk/garage bands? Really? Wow i'm flabbergasted. As someone who was a teenager in the early 80's I am dumbfounded anyone would consider this. It's a lost era boys & girls never to come back again. And I love Rise Against but they are not Punk or garage or whatever, it's been over for 25+ years.

Far From Left? Something like that ... I know they were British, but that's about all I remember.
Yeah, the show was basically New Wave, but Against Me was another band I have wanted to see FOREVER, so I didn't so much care (I also really like New Wave where it's really cool to hate on it). There was so much energy, and everyone was having a great time. It's also the only show I've been to where there was a defined "parents" section. HILARIOUS.

Nonsense. Musical genres only die when they cannot be heard. There have been a lot of bands keeping punk alive since those, oh so awesome 80s.

This not meant to be a "best of" list, so much as one trying to avoid the "usual suspects" charge. I'm emphasizing the low-fi end of the genre, i.e., albums that actually sound like they could be recreated in someone's garage.
Chicks rock:
-The Slits, In the Beginning There Was Rhythm
-Frightwig, Faster, Frightwig, Kill! Kill!
-Throwing Muses, House Tornado
-Sleater-Kinney, All Hands on the Bad One
I chose the least rocking-out of the Throwing Muses album, since it comes closest (in my ears) to what true feminist acoustic punk would sound like. The other three are straightforward, balls-to-the-wall rock and roll.
Classic Offensive Punk that doesn't devolve into Metal Over-emoting (Slipknot, I'm looking in your direction...)
-The Meatmen, We're the Meatmen and You Suck
-The Dwarves, Blood, Guts and Pussy
The Dwarves are really quite awful, but their album covers make up for it. The Meatmen on the other hand were wonderfully anti-PC and not too bad at the music-making.
Psychobilly:
-The Gun Club, Fire of Love
-The Cramps, Bad Music for Bad People
I found it curious that no one mentioned these two classic bands thus far, so I am.
Finally, there is a collection from the mid 80's which has apparently become legendary: Hell Comes to Your House. Track it down; it's a great record of what the pre-metal LA scene sounded like.
Oh, also let's not forget one of the current practitioners of the field:
-The Kills, Keep Your Mean Side.

The Dwarves! Those guys made me smile. I got to see them live back in 12th grade. They played for about 25 minutes and it ended with them getting into a fight with an audience member. Good times.

I need to add Vain's No Respect in there somewhere too.
Don't know how I forgot about Vain. So good.
Also, L.A. Gun's first album.
