A new month...

Ultimate Fantastic Four v8: Devils - A decent Moleman story (with some lovely Frazer Irving art in the flashbacks) and a decent time travel story. Nothing special, but definitely an improvement on Mike Carey's previous volume.

Ultimate Fantastic Four v9: Silver Surfer - Again, not bad but nothing special.

Shadowpact v2: Cursed - Meh - This book just began to get interesting in the last two issues, but it's too little too late.

Batman (Morrison) v1: Batman and Son - This is more like it! Why there are people out their claiming the (boring IMO) Paul Dini stories are brilliant and this is terrible, I'll never understand. Morrison's knocked out a great couple of stories here and I'm definitely interested in where this run is going. I wasn't so fond of the prose story, but then I'm generally not that into prose stories - which is why I read comics.

For me...I have picked up Invincible Iron Man...War Machine (agent of shield)...Mighty Avengers...Thor (with all his one shots)...Secret Invasion (very dissappointing) and New Universal (one shots)

Dropped: Moon Knight...Ghost Rider...New Avengers...Hulk (although I am considering picking up Incredible Hercules).

Plus, if available in TPB I would like to pick up Marvel's classic series...The Iliad and the Oddesey.

In my new box I just got in, I read:

Nova 17 - Awesome!
Avengers Initiative - Very cool. 1 more ish to go in this arc.
Battle Witches #1 - Awesome! Can't wait to read more Ennis war stuff!
SI Thor #3 - Not bad. I enjoyed this, and the art was good.

1985 #6 was good. The whole series was good, but I have no idea how it's supposed to tie in to the Millarworld stuff(Wolvie, FF). Also, the statue inspired images got really tiring after a while.

THOR: Truth of History was kinda cool. Great art, and a textbook romp of Thor goodness through history

SI X-Men #3 was ok. So.... that's where they're taking this, huh? interesting.....

Astonishing X-Men #27 - This issue was very good. I went from dropping this book to being interested in where Ellis is taking this book. Did I miss anything with the Ghost Boxes mini-series?
Mighty Avengers #19 - Ugh, this was bad. Probably the first time that I can remember not liking a Bendis written book.
Ultimate Spider-Man #127 - Loved the layouts and storytelling over the last quarter of the book. How creepy was that last page?
Superman New Krypton Special - Enjoyable and interested in seeing where this story goes even though I am only reading Action Comics and Supergirl at this point.
Amazing Spider-Man Secret Invasion - Overall, I think that I enjoyed this mini-series more than I thought I would. The artist (Santucci?) is a find. Love to see him on another book.
Ulimate Origins #5 - Uh oh. This was one of those mini-series that ended by being a lead in to another event. Hated it when DC did it with the Infinite Crisis lead-ins and don't think that I liked it here. Will be reading Ultimatum though...
Amazing Spider-Man #574 - An interesting issue.
Fear Agent #24 - Even with the erratic shipping schedule these days, this book is all kinds of awesome! Even the back-up was really good this time around. Can't recommend this book enough to folks who aren't reading it.
Captain Britain & MI13 #6 - The art from Leonard Kirk was really solid. Love Captain Midlands. Loving the Blade/Spitfire interaction. Never really expected to enjoy this book as much as I am!
Captain America #43 - Wow- I thought that Luke Ross was going to bring a little different art style to the book but it look exactly like everything that came before. Is this the Frank D'armata effect? Still a Top 5 book in my mind.

You are one of the few who would be able to find statue images in the art. I know that Ron from iFanboy absolutely loved this book. I'm interested in eventually reading this book. Did you feel like you were reading a Marvel book from the '80s?

Well, they are in like every issue and they are so batlent. Look at the cover to #6:

http://www.marvel.com/comics/onsale/covers/1008/1985006_cov-cat.jpg

Bowen's HULK (bronze version, but same pose):

Bowen's Black Knight (notice, same photo fromt the stock image! Didn't even buy it and turn it around):

http://bowendesigns.com/images/sculptures/legacy/Black%20Knight%20bust.jpg

The Iron Man and Cap images are also IM #126 and Cap from Avengers #4, which are not only classic images but are also Bowen and Sideshow statues. And this isn't even analyzing the inside of the comics or the other covers.

I thought it was ok. No, it doesn't read like it's a book from 1985, it's more "real life" than that. I didn't really get into it until #3, but the end was a bit of a letdown with a fun twist.

I can never decide if I like Morrison or not. He's written stuff I love (e.g. Mystery Play, JLA) and he's written stuff I...well, not hate, but didn't love (e.g. New X-Men, Flash). My (quite surprising) love for All-Star Superman has convinced me to catch up on his Batman run, so I know whether or not I want to order R.I.P.
Batman: Batman and Son HC--While I did enjoy it the first time I read it, I really did enjoy it even more on this second pass. I really like the idea behind the Joker issue, but I found it an interminable slog to get through. Back to the brighter side, this is Andy Kubert's best work. I have never had anything but near-ambivalence to his work before, and this blows me away.
Next: Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul!

Aetheric Mechanics GN-- I didn't even really read the solicitation copy for this. It was an inexpensive Ellis book, so I ordered it without a second thought. From the first splash page, I knew this was a book for me. The instant I realized it was an homage to Sherlock Holmes, my face split into a giant grin. I know some people will grouse over the ending, but I really liked this alot. Plus, the artwork is something else.

Empowered vol. 4 GN-- Adam Warren is setting himself up for one helluva fall, because once again he outdoes the previous volume. And even more Demonwolf scenes, so I am all kinds of hysterical laughter and smiling like a goofball. Definitely Most Deserving of Wider Recognition and not in a mean way.

Birds of Prey: Metropolis or Dust TP--Liked the art; was pretty let down by the story. Not going to be the highlight of McKeever's resume. Sadly, I can see me donating this one to the library a year from now, when I need the space.

Ultimate Spider-Man #127--Hella scary! Seriously.

Batman (Morrison) v1: Batman and Son - I wasn't so fond of the prose story, but then I'm generally not that into prose stories - which is why I read comics.
I think it's more because it was pretty bad prose.

Man... Morrison's stuff sounds cooler and cooler by the minute. Isn't it gonna tie into FC at the end of it? :(

I read PHANTOM EAGLE the other day, a HC from MAX abotu WW1 fighter pilots. Not my fave from Ennis, but the Chaykin art was cool!

• ADAM LEGEND OF BLUE MARVEL #1 - This was damn good. Can't wait to read more of this.
• AVENGERS INITIATIVE SPECIAL - Love the last page!
• CABLE #8 - Where has this book been? It's getting tense! EEK!
• DAREDEVIL & CAPTAIN AMERICA DEAD ON ARRIVAL - Loved the art here. And they revived an old DD villain!
• FRANKLIN RICHARDS SONS OF GENIUSES - classic Franklin
• INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #7 - Great solo ish. Love the cover too.
• IRON MAN END - Not bad, but not what I expected.
• MS MARVEL SPECIAL STORYTELLER - Very cool! Ties in with past issues of the book and was a great story by itself.
• PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL ANNUAL #1 - A little weird. Not my fave art.
• ULTIMATUM #1 - A decent beginning. It all makes sense, except Gwen was just there on the train with Pete and MJ? HUH???
• VENOM DARK ORIGIN #4 - Wow. We finally see what happened to MJ pre ASM 300.
• WOLVERINE CHOP SHOP - Good enough plot, but it didn't take it anywhere that interesting. And it read way to quickly. I buy all these Wolvie 1-shots, and this isn't the one I'd recommend.
• X-MEN MANIFEST DESTINY #3 - Didn't read this yet... because I forgot to buy #2!
• X-MEN / SPIDER-MAN #1 - Very cool! Art was key, story was funny and interesting, and the last page was a shocker!

I've also read:

- SUPERMAN: KRYPTONITE - Pretty cool. Sale's are was a tad different, but I liked it. There are some way cool Superman moments here, but there really isn't a huge battle at the end like I was hoping for.

- JOKER HC - Fairly brutal stuff man. Loved it though! The art is unreal. This would make a good X-mas gift I bet!

This week I have mostly been reading:

War Stories v2 - I think I possibly slightly prefered this volume to the previous one. And it's about the only historically based book where I actually bother to read the notes at the back. Very good stuff! Good art throughout too.

Daredevil: Battlin' Jack Murdock - I found this surprisingly enjoyable. I wasn't impressed with Young Avengers/Runaways or Iron Man: Big in Japan (from the same writer) but this was much better. nice art too from Carmine Di Giandomenico who I'm unfamiliar with.

Ghost Rider: Trail of Tears - According to the back cover, a prequel to The Road to Damnation, but as far as I could tell it's actually completely unconnected. Good art, but possibly a bit lacking in the storytelling as I was confused here and there which isn't a problem I usually have with Ennis's work. Overall it felt a bit lacking as a story.

Ghost Rider: The Road to Damnation - This one succeeded more in what it tried to be than Trail of Tears did, but it tried to be much less. Basically one of those over the top violent Ennis books that he churns out in his sleep.

[B]• VENOM DARK ORIGIN #4 - Wow. We finally see what happened to MJ pre ASM 300.

I don't remember this at all and most of my ASM issues are in boxes at my parent's place in Georgia. Care to remind me what I have forgotten?

Also, was the point of the first 10 pages to show us the origin of the symbiote? If so, this explanation didn't do much for me.

Waaaaaaaay back in ASM 300, Venom's 1st full app., it opens with Peter coming home to MJ freaking out that Pete is in the B&W costume. She totally loses it because she says she came home and something that she thought was Peter scared the crap outta her. MJ is huddled, crying in a corner when Pete finds her.

Turns out, it was Venom's doing and Peter - back in the red & blues FOR GOOD goes to kick Venom's @$$. That costume stayed buried until the recent Back In Black arc.

I don't think the point was to show it's "origin" but more to show what it had done for other creatures before it got to Eddie. I think he says at one point something to the effect of, "So you help weaker creatures survive? Well, then I'm all for it." Although, I'll admit that I like the point that sequence was a bit 'eh...." for me too.

Thanks - I knew Mr. Spider-Man would be able to toggle my memory! I do remember this now. I was already planning to do this when I returned to the ATL for Christmas but I think that it is time to pull my Michelinie/McFarlane ASM issues out of storage and give them a re-read!

Oh - I just read DRAIN by CB Cebulski at lunch. A fun read about a lesbian, ninja vampire hell bent on revenge. The art was a bit "fuzzy" at times, but overall was beautiful. Lots of bloody action and it's all set up for a sequel. If so, I'm in! :)

Finally finished "The Astonishing Wolf-Man" Volume 1. Wow, that got serious at the end there. Whoa. I like it, but now I NEED to know what's happening next. Talk about a gut punch. Oh, that Kirkman is a crafty fellow.

Now I'm re-reading "StormWatch" Volume 1, the original batch of Warren Ellis/Tom Raney issues. This might make a Pipeline soon.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 (35) - Beautiful art from Mike McKone, but really should I expect anything else? Overall, I enjoyed the story even if the reveal of Jackpot's identity was a bit of let down.
Amazing Spider-Man #575 ~ 576 - The first 4~5 pages of the first issue were hilarious. Nice art from Bachalo and a fun story from Joe Kelly. Can't wait for his next batch of issues.
Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #3 - Well, I think that we have found the next artist for this book, if Immonen ever decides to leave. This was an excellent issue...can't wait to see Mysterio (who has always been one of my favorite Spidey villains) appear in this book again!
Final Crisis Rage of the Red Lanterns - Not real sure why this is a FC tie-in. Seemed like it would have worked better as the next issue of GL. Shane Davis is a find - would love to see his art on a DC book that I read (which are dwindling day by day) again.
Savage Dragon #139 - How bad is it that I claim to be a Kirkmaniac and I didn't even realize that the old blue and yellow Invincible costume has some black in it? Really looking forward to the showdown with Solar Man!!
Astounding Wolf-Man #9 - Is it me or has Kirkman ramped up the gore in all of his books recently? Is he trying to follow through on his manifesto by proving that indy creator owned books should geared towards adults?

G.I. Joe #0 - $1.00 price point? SOLD! Chuck Dixon writing Joe? SOLD! Larry Hama writing an Origins book? SOLD! Christos Gage writing anything Joe related? SOLD! That still doesn't mean that I will be getting the book as I have always had an aversion the price point of IDW books.
The Corps! #0 - Rick Remender writing a G.I. Joe toy knock-off book was intriguing. The price, art and story intrigued me enough that I am going to give the first issue a try when it ships.

The whole thing is painted, and I think at times to show action (think swordfighting) to accentuate the action of the sword it's fuzzy. Either from photoshop or it was painted that way. I'm thinking it was done through computers. The sides of the panels would have that effect and the center of the image would be clear. The first 4 issues were very dark and it was more of a problem there, but the last 2 issues were MUCH better.

If you see this tpb on the shelf give it a flip through. It's still cool!

ASTONISHING WOLF-MAN - I read this a few months ago and dug it too! Remember, Kirkman fell waaaaaay behind on this one at first. It was shipping as a bi-monthly too! Then the 1st tpb was only going to be 5 issues, and the cancelled that and re-solicited it to be 7 issues (I think). And how cool is the payoff for THAT! I think it worked better in the long run. And now the book is back on track and "hopefully" on time in 2009!

A bit of a productive week....

Spider-Man: Blue - Hmm.. the second of the Loeb/Sale 'colour' books I've read and the second that's a love letter to an old dead flame. Not bad, but pretty inconsequential, and I thought Sale's art wasn't up to the standard of his work on Batman and Daredevil.

The Flying Friar - Rich Johnston's unofficial Superman Elseworlds book. Decent enough.

Heroes v1 (bathroom book) - Beautifully put together with great chapter headers by Tim Sale. I was a bit disappointed that the blurb on the back cover saying that the book contained Tim Sale's work for the series wasn't actually true. It had that comic cover with Hiro standing in New York and lots of other mocked up comic covers that as far as I'm aware were never in the telly series at all, but no sign of any of the other pictures he did. I want my picture of Hiro holding a sword up to a dinosaur dammit! Overall I thought the Matrix books did a better job by having stories that just happened to be set in the same world rather than trying to fit stuff in about the main characters. They did address that a bit in the second half of the book.

The Astounding Wolf-Man v1 - This book shows potential. I'm still not fully sure where it's going, but Kirkman (with the exception of Captain America) has never let me down so I'm on board for now.

Batman and the Monster Men - This was good. I was a little underwhelmed by Trinity, but this was much better.

Sgt. Rock: Between Hell and a Hard Place - Not bad story. Great art from Joe Kubert

You Can't Get There from Here - A nearly silent story from Jason. Decent stuff.

Dan:

I agree with you on Spidey: Blue. I think after that one I decided to stop buying those stories in issue format.

I greatly enjoyed Batman & then Monster Men! I even got the follow up!

If I'm remembering correctly, I also liked that Sgt. Rock story, but the ending was a bit weird.

I just finished up PARASYTE, the manga, vol. 1 this week and started on #2. This is really fun and creepy stuff! This kid's got this thing that took over his right hand, and there are similar creatures all over the world biting people's head off. So weird, but full of drama too. Vol 5 of this just came out so I thought I'd actually start to read it.

Ultimatum #1 - I am going to reserve judgement until I get a couple of more issues under my belt.
The Walking Dead #54 - Hmm, is the reveal for the roamers the ramblings of a crazy man or the actual explanation? I can't wait to get the next issue to find out!
Wolverine #69 - Another good issue. McNiven's art has never looked better - I really love the style he is using here. Next issue should be good. I wonder if the mention of Reed & Sue Richards will somehow tie this run together with Millar's FF stuff?
B.P.R.D. - The Warning #5 - Wow - not what I was expecting. Guess all of the action climaxed in the previous issue. Looks like we get more Lobster Johnson stuff next mini-series so that should be good.
Iron Man: Director of SHIELD #34 - Guess this is a preview of the ongoing War Machine series? When did Rhodey become half-man, half-machine? Guess it is time to visit Wikipedia.
Invincible #55 - More gore from Kirkman! Why am I so sensitive to this now? Can't wait for this to come out monthly in 2009!
Dynamo 5 #18 - Love this book. Not sure I know who the blue haired chick is at the end of the book. Do I need to re-read earlier issues?
Amazing Spider-Man #577~578 - Didn't think much of the Punisher issue. Paolo Rivera's art was a good bridge to Marcos Martin...who brings it again! So does Mark Waid. Who knew that JJJ had a father and that he was still alive? Raise your hands? Is this a ret-con?
Fantastic Four #561 - Even with the slipping shipping schedule, I am enjoying each issue that Millar/Hitch put out.

I'm not. I didn't find it very compelling. It felt like random disaster. And it seems like every major death was a girl. I realize they might not all stay dead, but Sue Storm, Dazzler, and the Wasp all are given 'deaths' with their loved ones being upset. Boo! (so far)

I've been dying to crack open some of the trades that I have gotten over the past couple of months (hello, Scalped Vol. 3 & Proof Vol. 1) so I have made a concerted effort this holiday weekend to knock down my monthly reading pile:

Anna Mercury #4 - This book is finally starting to come together for me and I think that a re-read will be in order once it is completed. The artist, can't remember his name right now, is a find and I would love to see what he does next.
Nightwing #150 - Probably my favorite issue of this series in a long time. It is a shame that it is being canceled as I think Tomasi has a good handle on the Dick Grayson character. Don Kramer has also turned out to be a really good artist for this book.
Gemini #3 - Three issues in and I am still greatly enjoying the story even though the art is still not my cup of tea.
Ms. Marvel #32 - After some lackluster SI tie-in issues, I read this one and was intrigued by this Carol Danvers back story. Paolo Siquiera's art works well on this book for me, wouldn't mind if he was the regular artist.
Ms. Marvel Storyteller - Loved Camuncoli's art on this special so much that I am thinking about picking up the X-Inferno (or whatever it is called) mini-series that he is doing. It was that good!
New Avengers #46 - Best (to me at least) SI tie-in yet! For me, the Hood storyline is one of the most interesting that Bendis has been building up.
Nova #19 - Another book that hasn't really had a bad issue since I started reading it monthly. Can't wait to get the next issue in my box next week.

It's the last day of November so I might as well make one last post to this thread:

Action Comics #871 - Part 4 of the New Krypton storyline. Didn't get parts 2 & 3 and felt like I missed something. May need to read all books to get the complete storyline if it improves. The art from Pete Woods looked a bit sketchier/rushed/unfinished than normal which was a bit distracting to me.
Supergirl #35 - Had planned on dropping this book at the end of the New Krypton storyline but those last 2 pages may have convinced me to keep reading. Jamal Igle is probably the perfect artist for this book right now.
Proof Vol. 1 TPB - AWESOME! Can't recommend this book highly enough. Loved the art, loved the opening arc. I see that we are getting The Walking Dead/Criminal treatment with the collected edition as there were no covers or chapter breaks in this book. I think that the next trade ships soon but I may have to track down the monthly issues before then.

Books from the previous week:

Gauze #1 (Arcana) - by Tramis, Hamann, Eve, Casebeer. Nice little creepy book about serial killings. A new horror comic with a decent idea.

The Punisher Max #64 (Marvel) - by Hurwitz, Campbell, Loughridge, Johnson. I don't know what's up with the writers, but sharks, again? Silliness is creeping in.

Moon knight #24 (Marvel) - by Benson, Texeira, Saltares, Brown, Suydam. Okay, but the element of his ship in such an urban environment takes me right out of the story. This is supposed to be New York.

Terra #1 & 2 (DC) - by Gray, Palmiotti, Conner, Mounts. I don't know how I missed this. Amanda is on art chores, she does not need help, btw. Let her do her thing and all will be well.

This past week:

Batman #681 (DC) - by Morrison, Daniel, Florea, Major. This was good, but I'm confused again. And everyone was right when they said Joker would eventually get his.

Proof #14 (Image) - by Gracian, Rossmo, Guzowski, Larsen, Aryan, Kitty. backup by Snow, Tindall. Like this one. The clean art was good, the beginning story is good. I just wish there was more focus on that than some of the other stuff.

The Umbrella Academy, Dallas #1 (Dark Horse Comics) - by Way, Ba, Stewart. Nice. Another great issue by these creators. Esp. comparing the price of this week's issues, this one cannot be beat.

Body Bags: One Shot, Cover C (Image) - by Pearson, Stewart. Expensive but worth it. Incredible story and art from Pearson at his best. This is what I like to see from him, not that contained Penguin stuff.

Teen Titans #65 (DC) - by McKeever, Barrows, Jose, Reis. I liked it. It was good. I found Bombshell particularly amusing.</p>

Ferryman #3 (Wildstorm) - by Andreyko, Wayshak, Eltaeb. Very, very good. The art creates a world of it's own and the story is not so typical.

Flash Gordon #3 (Ardden Entertainment) - by Deneen, Green. Though I do find some of the choice of colors annoying, as it makes some of the art hard to follow, I wonder if it's by choice to give the characters more of a visual cue for the readers. This story has a lot of potential.
