Normally I would rather read a war comic that focuses on infantry action, or maybe tanks. But that cover to G.I. Combat #80 is great. It plunges the reader directly into a very intense moment, with a sense of speed, danger, and violence. I can almost hear the sound that bullets made when they pierced the glass of that canopy.

About the "Best Classic Comic Covers" listings:

The "Best Classic Comic Covers" threads are intended to create an annual list of the best classic comic covers from the super hero, horror, si-fi, war, and western genres, as chosen by you, the CBR members.

General rules/guidelines (provisional):

(1) Candidate covers must be at least ten years old at the time of the listing.
(2) Each of the losing candidates will be ineligible for re-listing the following year, the winning candidate will be ineligible for re-listing for the four years following a win.
(3) Listings for each genre will consist of no more than eight candidate covers, initially chosen at random, and an alternate or "Other" option.
(4) Votes for "Other" or alternate titles will not be counted in the current year, but will be used as a basis for the next years listing (if you vote for an alternate, make sure you "write in" your choice in the form of a thread reply).

The above rules/guidelines are provisional. Suggestions as to changes and additions are welcomed and encouraged.

I saw this one many years ago and have always thought of it as a classic. The stare by the two soldiers and dog into the horror of what was about to transpire before them. Title "The End of the Marines". Cover by Jerry Grandenitti. Very much a classic.

I voted for G.I. Combat #83. It just felt so personal. A lot of the more iconic ones seemed a little distance... some even struck me as a little posed, but this one captured a tension that I really liked. Very simple, but utterly striking

G.I. Combat #80 came in second. As Shellhead said, it really captured that action and a feeling of a moment in time. Very very striking indeed.
Plus, the muted colours and the textures, expecially on the helmet, are just lovely.
