View Full Version : What If You Could Guess the Classic Cover?
Lone Ranger
10-29-2008, 02:47 PM
We are back with a brand new edition after passing the 500 cover threshold with Essential Guess the Classic Cover.
By my count, we've now down 1,650 cover in 5 years.
To refresh your memory:
The basic rules are as follows:
1. I will post a portion of a Classic Cover as a clue
2. If you know the answer - please state the title and issue number
3. I will post a larger portion after a while (10-15 views)
4. Partial guesses/answers to help others along are just fine.
5. I assign points depending on how many clue were provided.
6. Hints will be given to help move things along (or perhaps frustrate them!)
If you answer a cover with only one clue revealed, you are awarded 400 points. A two-clue answer will get you 300 points and so on.
Please feel free to talk about how you went about solving the cover, if you own a copy, any memories you have of the book etc….
The discussion is what makes this game fun.
Enough of the legalese - let's get started.

You know, that one hurt because it's a cover I should know quite well (it was one of the five comics that we had in the class library when I was in 5th grade).
Somehow I thought it looked like Buscema instead of Buckler and looked in all the wrong places. (It's funny how we all first thought "son of Satan", even though Hellstrom's trident is flat and wide)!

LR, have you used that cover before? It seems really familar in that I almost instantly recognized it when I saw it. Perhaps back when you were doing the puzzle cover game. I feel like I've seen the girl with the rhino section before somewhere else.
And as a side note, I really like doing these classic covers but I rarely guess them before someone else does. But they are fun to do.

BTW, I'd like to vent about something the GCD is doing which I think is stupid. On their cover credits for this issue, and others from this time frame, they give pencil credit to Alan Kupperberg for the heads on the the left side of the cover. He did not draw those. He made stats of the heads from the stories and then pasted them on the cover.

I agree with the venting. And from a pure 3rd-normal-form of database-data-entry-ing, they should put this in a note area, and source the artwork that was copied. I.E. page xx, panel x of comic xxx. That way, if there is discrepancy for the source work creator(s), it gets resolved in one place ---> the source!

I'll pass along these comments to the GCD. Fixing the Kupperberg credits can probably be done, but third-normal-form will probably have to wait until the move to the new database - which will happen after the move to a new hosting service and the rewrite of the current site, which is underway.

Preliminary results from the GCD's investigation of the Kupperberg heads: Alan K has described in an interview that he did indeed draw the Batman head on the cover of Detective 420, and another on the following issue. The one from #420 was inked by Neal Adams, and #421 by Dick Giordano. One or both of those heads were used in stat form by DC many times. Alan says nothing about the other characters' heads.

So had Daredevil #19 remained unsolved until I got home tonight, I was going to post some total obscure and worthless additional hints to sorta augment Kimo's clues, but mainly just to tease.
Something like "MMMSer #so-and-so posted a letter in this issue" Since it's a 1966 Marvelous Marvel Masterpiece I figure I stand a pretty good chance of it being true.
Hmmmm....
Now that I think about, my trivial-spidey-senses are tingling away like crazy. BRB.
*dashes up the stairs to his very messy comical book room in hopes of finding this Mighty Marvel Masterpiece*
*several minutes later*
Sorry that took so long. MAN! That room is such a mess right now.
Ah, here we go... Daredevil Comics #19. Cover date AUG 66, on the newstands, (and in this case for this particular comic, the very special comic book stand in Mrs. Smiths' Corner Grocery Store on 12th and College) the first week of June, 1966.
This was my very first ever issue of DD. As I've mentioned before, June 1966 was the month of Marvel comic book collecting epiphanies for me, as I decided to take very seriously the purchasing of all Marvel Super-Hero comics, every month from now on and going forward forever. Reality turned out to be something significantly smaller than that, but still, that was where my 11-about-to-turn-12 heart was way back then.
So yea its no small wonder that when I glanced at the first clue, it was instant light bulbs flashing and yelling "Nailed it!" to my computer screen at work yesterday.
*flips to letters page*
And bingo! Thanks to Eddie Birchmore of Pembroke, Mass. 02359, my bizzaro clue would have been truthfully and fully usable. I could'a posted:
"MMMSer #22278 had a letter printed in this comic."
Could'a but can't.
One of our premiere, elite and slightly manga-biased players spoiled the fun.

Thanks. GCD is where I found it. But I was wrong about the numbering, I didn't notice that they carried over the numbering from Ziff-Davis, so it is actually #3. So Michi and ROK actually had the numbering right. If LR wants to be precise, the points can go to one of them.

Here's the interview excerpt where Alan Kupperberg tells Daniel Best about them:
"Neal Adams was pencilling a cover for Detective Comics [#420, Feb. 1972]. And those books had the heads of the featured characters of the title running down the left side of the cover of those twenty five cent books. Neal was drawing the cover and when he stepped away from his board, I just penciled in a Batman head on the side of the cover where there would have otherwise been a stock shot pasted in later, during production. Neal inked it when he inked the cover. So they used it. They picked up that head and used it on a lot of stuff. On Justice League covers, on Batman covers, on Detective Comics covers. The first issue it was on was Detective Comics #420. The next issue, #421, Neal pencilled another Batman cover and I did the same thing again. But this one was inked by Dick Giordano. So you can see the difference two issues in a row. I’m pretty sure this Batman head appeared on other covers too."

Nice call, MWG! I was sidetracked into spending time on the GCD looking at Myron Fass publications (which turned out to be a rather charming diversion, actually) just on the basis of that weird "WEIRD" lettering style in Clue #1, even though it was clearly overlayed on a photo background. Still, part of the charm of this game lies in the various sidetracks and byways one is lured into exploring.

Yeah, I knew I knew it from somewhere... the first clew put me straight on to Gil Kane in the super soaraway 'seventies, but I was all over comics such as Where Monsters Dwell.
The GCD credits it to Kane and Sinnott. While I do see Kane elements, it doesn't jump out at me as an obvious Kane cover. Maybe he just submitted a sketch.
How odd. As stated supra, I was onto ol' Sugar Lips from clew 1.
And having poked the GCD, I would point to:
the design of the monster
the muscles on Sinbad's left leg
the girl (she previously appeared on a Creatures on the Loose cover or two, IIRR)
the cracks in the masonry
I will say it's an odd inking job - the shading to the side of the stone steps (below Sinbad's left leg) looks like the work of someone from the Phillipines to me, perhaps Rudy Nebres. But the faces of the two humans are Marvel house style a la Sinnott.
Actually, the more I look at this the more it looks like it was severely reworked from the Kane basis - he would have had Sinbad in buccaneer boots.
And what's the deal with Sinbad's butt?
It is clad in a pair of trousers slightly tighter than those worn by the famous mariner in the corner box.

If you are referring to the one or two clues a day, I will have to support LR on this. I think by slowing things down, it gives more people a chance to see each clue. I think the circle of players who have solved covers has expanded with the slower pace of the game.

If you're referring to the sluggishness at the GCD - I feel your pain. I often need covers and info from there for this game and various blog posts.
I've actually started going to Comic Book Database from time to time (or Atlas Tales and Mike's Amazing when the Big Two are involved).
As for my speed (and I don't think that's what you're talking about - but since ROK raised it) - this game is moving fairly for two reasons. The first is that I try to allow people a chance to view - I know that we're all over the world and having varying degrees of computer access. You'd be surprised by how long it can take for an image to be viewed 10 times.
The other issue is my time - it's much more scarce than it used to be. Folks who remember my pre-fatherhood days knew that a new clue could pop up at any time. With my internet access pretty much limited to my office - they'll show up 9:00 to 5:00 EST, Monday through Friday. That's the best I can do at this stage, and it seems to work. I find that the Classic Comics regular are not the 24/7 crowd that inhabit other message boards.
To be honest, I've also been dedicating more time and energy to my own blog, and pimping myself out to Comics Should Be Good has also taken some time away - but hopefully everyone is still relatively happy with the way things are going.

Yes, indeed. Just to clarify things to you and ROK, I've not a bad thing to say to all your selfless work on this great game and contributions elsewhere on CBR. And as you would know I'm a huge fan of your blog. Put as much or as little time into the Guess the Classic Cover contest as you feel is appropriate Scott.
My comments were all in a the spirit of a mirthful frustration over the slowness of the GCD as of these past few weeks. Kind of a love/hate relationship, but very much mostly love toward the Grand Old database.
I mostly use Mikes Amazing World when I think we are dealing with DC. I often use Atlas Tales for, well... suspicions of things Atlas.
Mile High is nice, but I like the layout of more covers per page you get on the GCD. Also the lack of clutter is nice. And it provides access to my weakness of wanting to "see" inside the cover (i.e. those all those important credits!)
Unfortunately, for the lesser known Golden and Silver Age and especially non-Big Two covers Mile High is just too incomplete.
GCD remains the sine qua non for information on and browsing of comics most obscure classics.
I love the GCD... but we all know how frustrating it is.
Sorry, for any misunderstanding of my silly comments.

Good one JK. And I'm kicking myself because I happen to have this comic sitting amid a stack of about 25 random classic comics not 10 feet away from my computer. I was just admiring that cover a few days ago, and getting some good entertainment out of the Elongated Man backup story. That was a fun series that for quite awhile ran in the back of Tec.

Not as much as I am kicking myself.
On the first clew I thought 'Infantino Detective cover from the swingin' 'sixties' and launched myself at the internet. Then cruised straight past the thumbnail, pausing to think 'oh, yes, I've got that one - the Joker's HQ is called the Ha-Hacienda; I remember wondering what this odd word 'Hacienda' was when I was 13 years old.'
As they say on the web:

Tell me about it.
I went through the entirety of Forbidden Worldsand Adventures Into the Unknown and was, moreover, poised for Midnight Mystery and Gasp! until I checked back in and saw a hint which sent me off on the Jaguar's track.
Bizarrely, Forbidden Worlds seems to be full of covers featuring the colour green and miniature people.
