It's great to hear they're considering redesigning the database, hopefully this means more flexible search capabilities... beyond just two variables and a "sort" by name or date.

They're past the stage of "considering" it; the redesign is well underway. The new schema is basically complete. I think you'll be happy with the result, and if anyone reading this is familiar with SQL or Django development, the GCD tech team can always use a hand!

Thanks, I'll be looking forward to it... and I think better search functionality will definitely help with the site load as well.

BTW: I would have loved to help but my db experience is somewhat limited to mysql (and php) on a linux box. :)

Tell me about it. It looks like a parody of cheesy comic book art, and I'm guessing that ain't what anybody had in mind when they published this thing.

There are times (and I know this is not a recent cover) that I hear and see people rave about artists or artwork that's just plain godawful and I know how the kid felt when he saw the emperor parading down the boulevard in his birthday suit.

Rob Allen

Whoops; got it backwards - it was in the Elias list, but not the Golden. It's because he's credited as "Mike" Golden in the Goblin indexes and I searched for "Michael".

In another week or so, the GCD will be on its new host. The user interface will be pretty much the same, but reliability and speed should be much improved. The real rewrite of the site will then commence. They're using mySQL, Python and Django; anyone with knowledge and/or willingness to help should get in touch with the GCD Tech team.

When searching titles there is something that bugs me tho. They include the Essential TPBs in with the comic books. It really slows down a search when you have to plow thru the Essential reprints. Just wondering if anyone else is bothered by this.

They need some sort of more advanced filter so you can reject at the outset all those unwanted titles. It's murder when searching X-Men or Batman books. Also sometimes failure to put a hyphen or a comma will foil your search. And, I wish you could search by genre. That is a field they provide for in their indexing, but it is unsearchable. I wrote to GCD asking them to institute this several years ago, and they said it was in the works... but it never happened.

And yet I still love the Grand Old Database.

Good going.

I have never heard of this magazine.

Thanks ROK. I really lucked out on this one... when I looked at the images I thought "this line work looks so 'Golden Age' it must be an old horror cover." Perhaps an old House of Mystery cover, which would be consistent with Elias and from what I've gathered, Golden as well (seems he did a bit of work for the title in the 70s). But searching the GCD can be a nightmare sometimes, as was the case for Golden. After the last clue, I gave it one last shot and just ended up searching on Elias and going to the end of his listed credits... the fact that the title ended in the 80s and it wasn't a "big two book" were critical at this stage.

I didn't remember this Warren title either at first, but now that I've seen it it's strangely familiar... I might have even had this issue, although for the life of me I don't know what became of it.

Well played, ROK. The GCD seems to be back up for the nonce, and they credit the cover to Joe Simon (corrected from original attribution to Sol Brodsky).

I sometimes see multiples of these "unauthorized" I.W./Super reprints turn up in dealer boxes at cons. They must have received very spotty distribution though I suspect their print runs were relatively high.

I have run across these reprint title for years, but until recently nobody seemed to know just how many titles were published by Israel Waldman between 1958 and 1964. Wikipedia seems to have a pretty comprehensive list of them now:

Then I did a Story Title search for "stamp robbery". The search function worked great and now you don't have to plow thru every list from the beginning. You can jump to pages if you have some idea that the title or credit you are looking for would be near the middle or at the end of the list.

Jeez, I had no idea BATTLE actually made it into the '60s. Just barely.

I spent my time perusing the short-lived titles that I thought went defunct in the late '60s, such as Silver Surfer (1st series). I thought I had it, actually when I looked at the cover to #10. But then I noticed that the SS series actually ended in 1970. But check this out:

Yeah, my first port of call was Captain Marvel, the last issue of which was dated December, 1969, just squeezing in - but I recalled how tricky the Lone Ranger is (and probably needs to be...). Also, there was something of the Don Heck in the clews.

My second point of call was Marvel's Space-Born Superhero! Captain Marvel. I don't know whether to have a go at the GCD for this nonsense, or congratulate them for being even more pedantic than I.

Our own Lone Ranger, master of this fun and long-running game, as well as comix columnist extraordinaire, celebrated his 37th on October 8. Yes, and so did all those issues of Green Lantern and All-American Comics I've just looked at.

Hint for anyone else on the same track: the Kanigher-created semi-villainess in the Alan Scott GL stories wears striped tights and a different sort of glove.

I have suddenly had a vision of the Lone Ranger chuckling evilly to himself in a cave, with a cactus outlined 'gainst the moon outside. Tonto: 'Once more the fools fall for your cunning tricks, O master!' etc., etc.

This is Strange Suspense Stories #1 (1967) from Charlton. It features Jim Aparo's SF 9-pager "What Primitives These Earthmen Be!".

I flashed on ST 101 first. But then I got a strange Curt Swan vibe.

I love the cover too, but it should be noted that a great deal of Rocke's covers are from other people doing the layouts, mostly Dick Giordano and Steve Ditko.

Structurally, this one looks very much like Aparo, perhaps based on a panel form the interior story itself.

Claw the Unconquered # 9.

Nicely done - 300 points for ph!

I actually thought that tip of the logo might have people thinking 'Batman' of all things.

I did the Kirbyesque monster done by Giffen here.

There weren't all exciting. To be honest, some of them were quite dull.
