Has anyone seen that episode of Superman Adventures called Apokolyps Now! In the second part Darkseid kills Dan Turpin to show the humans how powerful he is and that they could never stand up to him. In Final Crisis #4 we find out that Dan Turpin is Darkseid's host body! So now Turpin has succumbed to the Dark Side. So what is this connection between Darkseid and Turpin??? And why is Turpin so important. He's just a cop/detective?

In the cartoon they modeled Turpin on Jack Kirby as a homage. I think Morrison is going for the same "Kirby vs. Darkseid" angle.

Even in the late 1980's comics, Turpin was moreorless a visual analogy of Kirby there too.

Turpin was killed in "Apokolips...Now!" because they weren't allowed to kill the Kents. Turpin is used here because of his connection to the works of Jack Kirby in the 70's, especially the connection to the Fourth World. Dan Turpin has always been involved against the New Gods in one form or another, even during his regular stint in the Superman books, following "Man Of Steel". As a member of the SCU and the second in command, Dan used weapons from all walks of life. Including New God based technology. In the 1995 Adventures Of Superman annual, Turpin fought Kalibak, retelling the original fight and setting it in modern continuity. Turpin was also present in Superboy #24 and #25, when the Female Furies came to Hawaii looking for Knockout, in 1996. So the character has always had a connection and my guess is that when Superman shows up, Dan will try to fight back because of his friendship with Superman.

Dan "Terrible" Turpin's first appearance in NEW GODS (first series) No. 5 -- 1971 (http://www.supermanartists.comics.org/silverage/Turpin-NewGods05.JPG)
Post-Crisis, in the GUARDIANS OF METROPOLIS miniseries, it was revealed / retconned that derby-wearing Dan Turpin (http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=25006&zoom=4) in his youth had been derby-wearing Brooklyn (http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=6249&zoom=4), the American founding member of Simon and Kirby's international team of Boy Commandos!
Back in the Golden Age, Brooklyn wasn't afraid to give "would-be world conqueror" Adolph Hitler the bum's rush! (http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=70553&zoom=4) Maybe Turpin will do the same to Darkseid in the end.
(Wonder if Morrison is keeping this retcon in mind when writing FINAL CRISIS.)
