This thread is dedicated to the amazing 4 issue run where storm was a GLADIATOR.
I shall post pictures. discuss them. discuss the arena. Discuss lesbianism and tentacles and bondage.

Hmm, i know it was unlikely that they would talk about this subject during this storyline, but since this was the first meeting Callisto and Storm had since X-men (second series)79, why did Callisto didn't asked about Marrow?
That really bugs me till today, Callisto dissapeared after making Sarah stay with the X-men beliving she would be in good hands with Storm around. But when they meet again it seems as if Marrow never existed (well i think she actualy doesn't in Chris Claremonts idea of female X-men). Callisto also never asked any of the X-men about her during Excalibur (third series). But when they both appear again together during the X-Cell arc of X-factor she is all maternal again.
Sorry to interrupt the flow of Claremontistic fetishes here, but i just wanted to say how much this reunion of Storm and Callisto made me wonder what happend to Sarah during the six month gap that even Callisto doesn't ask about her?

callisto obviously had more pressing concerns at the time, as evidenced by the tentacles.

I have this abomination of a trade, and by the goddess it is aweful. I mean pure unadultrated filth. This is one of the sole reasons why I would love to bash CC in the head with a baseball bat, every day 7 days a week. I wouldn't even need payment. Thinking of this trade alone fills me with enough anger to beat the **** even while half starved to death.
Callisto looked like Nick Fury with tentacles.
Storm, oh god... the pain... the shear fugliness.By the goddess, I can't begin to describe how aweful it was to read her in this thing. Bondage, Lesbianism, hell I could condemn her on her fashion sense alone. Argh! I wan't to tear her into pieces for impersonating the real Storm. My Storm..

I remember being so excited to read this. Claremont had been talking about it for so long and it had been delayed a lot. It was supposed to be released as a graphic novel but ended up being shoehorned into the X-treme series. I like Claremont. I thought his third Uncanny run had some great moments, but this... what was he thinking? Why doesn't he just write some indie porn comic and be done with it. I thought this guy respected Storm. How can the one wrtier who gets Storm and makes her so awesome is also the one who can write her in the worst way unmatched by any other writer? I know a lot of people like to mock this and joke about it in good fun, but for me it's justso bad I just can't bring myself to do that. He can do better than this.

So you condemn this story because of lesbian overtones? Awww, homophobia, how adorable! (That's sarcasm. Felt I shoul;d explain that as I doubt your I.Q goes to double digits)
Seriously. It's not a great story. BUT: If you're hating it just because it features lesbian/S&M themes than frankly you're a bigot who should take thier verminous opinions elsewhere. (Maybe to the bottom of a really deep lake)

No, I honestly like it. Sure, it's CC clunky™ but it's easily as daring as anything ever done with the X-books, and maybe even at Marvel in general. Bruction's tame by comparison.
And the art's great. Srsly.
Has to be one the worst stories I've ever read. The art was terrible and the story just didn't keep me intrested at all. Just bored the crap out of me, plus the story was insanely stupid.

Arena was a very interesting book. It certainly wasn't pulling any punches and I really like the direction Claremont was aiming at for Storm. He'd done her as goddess, as rebel, as leader, as a child. This was Storm as a wild woman, which is just a true a quality as any other. My only wish is that the army of mutants Storm had at her command was awknowledged by the wider X/Marvel-verse. Did they all lose their powers? Did Storm follow up on that at all? Its like everyone acts like this story never happened.

OK, I just re-read.
I really like the art! Does Storm still have the tattoos that she got in these issues? I don't think I've seen them since.
I'd say the only black mark against CC in these issues is that he doesn't really write Strong Guy too well.
There are parts of this comic which are strange and transgressive, but it was intellectually engaging. CC was really playing on the fact that there was a significant percentage of mutants in the general population, which has obviously now been lost from the X books.
Not for everyone, but definately one of the best examples of that sort of thing, if you like that sort of thing.

My main problem with Arena (besides the fact that the art actually physically hurt my eyes) was that that whole 'gladiator-fights-with-the-lead-characters-secretly-wanting-to-die-for-applause' thing wasn't exactly new. Marvel had done this to death. CC himself had used, re-used and re-re-used the exact theme and plot elements several times over already, with several other characters. So when after all the announcement, Storm: The Arena finally came out in X-Treme, all I could think was: 'This AGAIN???'
-The Beauty and the Beast mini-series by Ann Nocenti
-New Mutants (Possessed Karma runs the arena.) by CC
-Muir Island Saga by CC
-Storm: The Arena by CC
(-And later again in Contest of Champions II, again by CC)
All with the "They're CHEERING me! I know I should hate this but they're CHEERING me!!"
And at least in those other stories, the plot was more important than the costumes.

It helped advance the careers of Kirk Douglas, Charleton Heston, and Russell Crowe, so there is something to be said for is.
Mind you, I don't recall there being a scene in Ridley Scott's Gladiator where the tranny emperor gloated, and then in Elysia, Russell Crowe went hot-tubbing with a butch lesbian with tentacles for arms in a hentai-inspired scene.

First of all, this Storm is grade-A hottie.
Second of all, how is Storm's sexual preferences a form of disrespect to the character? The woman can like what she wants, she doesn't have to adhere to some invisible wall of "bump ugly ethics" to be a strong, awesome character. bravo! I loved reading these panels, frankly.
