View Full Version : STORM WEEK: Why do you love Storm?

Pretty straightforward, I think. What is it about Storm that makes you love her? If you only like her, what about her do you like? If you neither love nor like her, don't post in here. This thread is not for you, unless you're trying to like her.

Anyway, I love Storm for a variety of reasons, and I'll tell you all about them.

First of all, I love her look. It's what drew me too her initially. She's one of the most recognizable characters in comics simply because of that white hair, and I absolutely love it. I love that she has these cool exotic features--including the prominent widow's peak, blue feline eyes, killer bone structure, and of course the white hair--and I love that she's so damn tall. I love it. She's this fierce Amazonian/drag queen-chic diva who just pops right off the page. She's a visual treat.

Second, I love her significance. She's the most prominent non-white hero in comics, and she really blazed a trail back in the day. At a time when male characters were still being portrayed as generally more competent, powerful, and authoritative than the female characters, Storm burst on the scene as someone who more than held her own with her male peers and was often the one saving them. This went a step further when she became leader of the X-Men. She's an important character for women and minorities.

Third, I love her powers. They're just great fun and full of so many wonderful possibilities.

Fourth, I love her weaknesses. I love that this woman can face the end of the universe without fear or hesitation, but she gets nervous in an elevator. I love that she must remain in control of her emotions at all times, or she could do damage to the world around her. I love that she grew up as a solitary individual with nobody to count on but herself. I love that the combination of those things resulted in her often having difficulty connecting with her own humanity. I know many people cite the whole "goddess" thing as a reason to dislike Storm, but it should be one of the reasons to like her. I think it's easier to understand when comparing her to Jean. Where Jean is a human struggling with being a goddess, Storm is a goddess struggling with being human. I think Jean's struggle is easier to connect with because she starts in a more human place, but Storm's struggle has often been about getting to that more human place. I like that.

Fifth, I love her contradictions and dichotomies. She is both royalty and street urchin, nurturer and warrior, goddess and human, giver and thief, and an orphan surrounded by family. She's the first one you'll want to trust and the last one you'll want to piss off. She can be raw and edgy or classic and refined.

Finally, I love her strength, which I've already touched on. From the beginning, Storm has been an example of self-empowerment, independence, charity, and adaptability. Much like Wonder Woman, she is meant to represent something better and fairer than the raw deal female characters have often gotten from male creators. She is a symbol of female strength and female kindness. She is often put in stories where she is the subject of objectification and/or attempted domination, and each time, she makes damn sure her would-be masters regret ever looking at her. She is not a victim, and she's not a damsel. She's a knight in shining armor, and she's a damn force of nature.

And that's why I love Storm.

She looked hot when Marc Silvestri drew her. And JR jr drainwg her in her punk phase, sometimes dressed her in ripped pantyhose with some really short skirt, which turned me on, when I was a child. ♥

I love Storm, in the first place because she considers all life to be sacred and she's made it her charge to protect it. It's as though she always aims to be the best a superhero can be, and she inspires her teammates to do the same. She always sees the bigger picture when they're fighting supervillains. I also very much like how she cares for her plants.

A trivial thing really, but I love the way she speaks. It sounds very majestic. "I shall have to, shan't I?" "X-Men! We've been set upon!" and my personal favourite "Goddess cast Malice into the eternal abyss, that Marauder has done her work well". That's a very elegant way of cursing someone, if I ever saw one.

I think Jean's struggle is easier to connect with because she starts in a more human place, but Storm's struggle has often been about getting to that more human place. I like that.I second this paragraph (well, pretty much the entire post, really, but especially this paragraph), I think it's cool how she has a personal weakness -claustrophobia- where most superheroes (especially these days) don't have any significant specific weak spots. It also helps that her weakness is psychological in nature, and not something of the type Kryptonite or something.

As Hi-Fi said, "what's not to love."

I think the least of all reasons, for me, is her powers. Sure, they're awesome, but that doesn't do it for me. I prefer it when characters have powers more down-to-earth. I'm a huge fan of her powerless days.

Other than that, I love her caring but tough personality, her wisdom and intelligence, and her distinctive and gorgeous look. I think that wraps it up in a nutshell. She's about the only X-Man that comes close to Kitty in my Top [whatever] list.

Chris,

I echo a lot of your rationale for loving Storm.

But I would like to add a few more.

1. I love her because of her spirituality and ability to see the world in a million different ways. It's not defined but it is the most important aspect of her life. It determines her ability to heal and to be the character she is now. It's the guidepost, guide, sustainer and empowerment that guides her to get up everyday. She's not preachy, just honest and hold nothing back in worship of the goddess. I also love the fact that she sees the world as patterns of energy and has such powerful spiritual strength to hold eternity in her mind with no ill effects. I love that she easily speaks to gods and they either want her to join them (ie Loki) or see divinity in her and are in awe of her (ie the Triune.) I love that.

2. I love her sense of humor, everyone says she doesn't have one. But the truth is that she is extremely sarcastic, and really intelligent with her jokes. She's playful, like a cat but also really dangerous as well.

3. Besides her spirituality I love her intelligence nearly as much. The woman is brilliant. When Professor X needed her to speak to different world leaders or senators or a for a political event Storm was the first person he called. When she started the XSE she showed intelligence, a long term vision and the will to make that happen. But what really showed her intelligence was an event that happened years ago. The X-men had been caught by Magneto and Nanny had redressed their mentality and physicality to infant level. because of her mental and physical developments she freed the team. I also love how complex she is which you already wrote about in your post.

4. She's not simple. She's not merely a street urchin, a thief, a goddess, a princess, a queen, a mutant activist, an African, an American, a descendant of the first race of humanity. she is connected to the life force of the universe and she is so powerful.

5. I love how powerful she is. Despite every time someone has tried to victimize her she was never a victim. She not only stood up for herself but taught every man that wanted to hurt her that she was not a plaything. Whether it was killing the man that tried to rape her or banishing Kahn to the Void or frying Dracula with lightning bolt Storm don't take no mess. I love seeing her use her powers to play or fight. I love that she is so powerful and she still possesses that childlike wonder for the world.

6. Ororo is beautiful, her name means beauty. She is that in spades. She is visually stunning. But that's not all that makes her beautiful. She faces her fears about people and claustrophobia. She even overcomes them. I love how she overcame her claustrophobia or that she continues to weakens it's hold on her. She is always trying to learn from her mistakes and not repeat the same ones over and over again.

7. She loves to dance and go clubbing. That's hot.

That's enough for now.

I love her because she is Woman unbound - she radiates a force and power which few other fictional beings do and I don't just mean the storms, though they play a part in it. Storm is, in my mind, the true unstoppable force in the X-men whether it be in violence, sex, spirituality, physique, ecology or love ... she is power. She speaks and all must listen. She is Woman.

I also love the mythic touch of Storm, she is living legend and this adds a more than human touch to Storm so that she feels like she is something more than a gaudy random in latex with fancy powers.

I love that Storm has such an unquestionable queer reading - Storm's sexual liberation feels oddly empowering even if, looking back, CC threw a heck of a lot of racial fetishisation into it. It did feel important to me when I was younger, though the why of it was never so understandable to me back then.

I also love the fact that we can freely look back in humour upon Storm's treatment by CC without despising the character. There's just somethin' about Ororo.

I love her because she embodies the essence of a true hero. The adage, "With great power comes great responsibility," has become to a lot of modern writers a a nostalgic catch phrase that no longer applies. Storm carries the standard of the ideal. Her moral compass as well as Superman, Captain America (Steve Rodgers)and other iconic comic figures will always endure. Even in the face of some Euro thought, ::looks at Ellis, Millar, and Morrison--whom have replaced this kind of idealistic obligation with narcissistic power displays. "The mantra--I don't believe in the concept of the classic superhero comes to mind"

IMNSHO--Some heroes are created to inspire, they are a fantasized realization of the noblest hope that lay dormant in all who seek justice. ::sips some more Obama juice:

I love Storm because shes a total impossibility look wise. Yet she comes off totally natural. She makes you look beyond her appearance (skin color ect ect) while everyone else kind of doesn't even try. It's hard to explain, sometimes shes just funny. When she speaks you always get this feeling its going to be something really long winded or over stated and it works for her. Almost everytime she speaks it like poetry. Her speeches are like sex, they can be soft slow and sweet, or they can come at your hard fast and furious, heck they ring true from the front or the back sometimes its like both I imagine.

Storm is a powerful creation. If anyone has read Alan Moore's Promethea, you are firmiliar with the concept of a being existing outside of normal reality, only to be channeled by artists and writers from time to time. This is the frame of mind I see Storm in. She has a presence all her own, beyond the comics, beyond the cartoons, beyond the films, the videogames, the theme park rides and toys and so on. Storm appears through those mediums, but those mediums can never fully express or fully contain her.

Just like the elements she commands: rain may come and stay a while, but it will go on its way and have its own adventures, and then, some other day, it may rain again, but this rain is a new rain, different from the one before, but also the same. To me, Storm brings a primordial energy back to the surface of global consciousness: the high priestess, the Empress, the Goddess. She is Ma'at: truth, justice and balance. She is Hathor: mother, nurturer, fierce protectress, wild woman and seductress. She is Oya: the fiery whirlwind of change, demanding your attention and respect lest she chop off your head. She is Yemaya: beautiful, rich provider, the boundless sea.

I think this is why some love her and others hate her. She embodies so much of what has been denied in the modern world. As a powerful, independant African woman, her very presence defies the European male-centric status quo. Whereas most people are concerned with artificial technologies and commodities, she is one with the earth, with the seas, with the sky, and the heavens beyond. And where many find comfort in the blocked off confines of steel and concrete buildings, she finds stagnation and repression.

She is as free as the winds, but dependable as the sun. Deep as the abyss but effortless as the rainbow. She would smite her enemies with extreme prejudice in one moment and then water her plants with a gentle shower. And all the while she sees no contradiction. That's the best part. She encompasses all effortlessly. Just as a goddess should.

Get ready for long speech, because I've got a lot to say about Storm.

The first thing that attracted me to Storm was her bizarre and ravishing features. I was around 7 years old when I first saw her on the X-Men Animated Series cartoon back in '92. All I could keep saying to myself was, "Who is that woman?!" They didn't have much detail in the cartoon such as her feline eyes or extravagant bone structure. But she was still breathtaking, and ever since then I've always found her intriguing.

Her powers have always been amazing to me. Thunderstorms and weather phenomenon are things that interested me ever since I was a child. While other kids were frightened by thunderstorms and tornado warnings and massive rainstorms, I was the one who may have been frightened, but also extremely curious and in awe of it all. So when I met Storm, a woman whose powers are beautiful and terrifying all at the same time, I couldn't help but be instantly hooked on her powers. Not to mention the amount of precision she has with her mutant power. I don't care much for the raw power of it all, but the precision and accuracy she has makes her even more deadly.

There's also a lot more that I love about her, but I'm so worn out from school and lack of sleep that I just can't find the energy to write anymore.

This is exactly how I felt on seeing her for the very first time in UXM 175...and it was love at first sight...Ororo is the sole reason I started collecting comics...I kid you not...as I read further and became more acquainted with the depth and complexity of her character (all of which has already been said) I fell truly, deeply and madly (yes, I am an SG fan).

I keep trying to find eloquent words to express my feelings about Storm but I think that this best sums it up.

I love Ororo like a deep dish meatlovers pizza with extra cheese , mushrooms and black and green olives.

I love Storm like she's grandma's sunday dinner: Collard greens w/smoke turkey wings, home-made mac and cheese w/lots of cheese, fried chicken, cornbread, potato salad, rice and sweet tea.

I love Ororo like Captain Morgan's Coconut Rum and pineapple juice.

I love Ororo like when I come home after a long day and find two cold beers in the fridge.

I love Ororo like a slice of Red Velvet cake with pecans on top and a cold glass of milk.

I love Ororo like when I wake up in the middle of the night with that peculiar feeling and roll over to feel her right beside me ready and willing.

I love Storm because she's been to Hell and back, and has the scars to prove it. Ororo has changed and grown and we readers actually got to see it happen to her. Ororo has had more character growth than most comic characters ever dream of. Her changes and spiritual growth is a core reason Storm remains an all-time favorite character of mine.
