View Full Version : Mark Guggenheim Young X-Men Interview
The Last Generation of X-Men: (http://comics.ign.com/articles/923/923685p1.html) Interesting choice of title.
I'm ready for a new way of creating suspense other than "someone's going to die!"

I wish we would move on from the first 5 mediocre issues and stop referring and questioning about them in every issue.
That being said, I always feel weird when people say things like, "I thought it would be a runaway success."
I must be a big fan of modesty

Guggenheim's candor about the impressions on his first arc is refreshing. Usually it seems like the creators get really defensive or just avoid answering stuff like that entirely. I'm getting a better feeling about this book, but I'll still be treading a bit carefully for just a little longer. I still very much prefer the New X-Men cast, so only adding Anole's kind of a letdown (as much as I like the character, he alone isn't quite enough to convince me to pick this book up again without some better reviews moving forward).

His regret over the first arc and candor regarding his mistakes makes me want to give this book another try. We'll see how it goes. I do enjoy his Dust though.

Guggenheim seems to always do good interviews, but this one was great. He really says it like it is. He knows there were mistakes but he's commited to making it better.
Preview art looks good. I think Rafa Sandoval might be the best artist this book has had.

Nice work by the IGN interviewer, calling Ink "Tattoo."
I'm enjoying the book and interested in Ink and Greymalkin, but I still wish those two spots could have been filled by existing kids that needed more fleshing out and time in the spotlight....

Sandoval looks SOOOOOO good on this book! I love his art, and it looks like The Hellfire Cult is moving in on Ink... question is, why!??!
I'm actually very interested and excited to hear that Guggenheim can accept his flaws in order to move beyond them.

Probably b/c, like many others, they don't know that he isn't a mutant.

It sounds like Guggenheim is a busy man, also. He even mentioned not staying on the book for a good amount of time, didn't he? Well....he was quite charming and gracious about the first arc....yet it had to have taken its toll on him. Despite my feelings about the first arc, i always tried to avoid being vicious. This second arc holds promise!
i also agree about Ink....despite him being more likable, i just am not getting into his story. Greymalkin, yes! i'd rather see a young mutant that i already enjoy in Ink's place. Ah well...i am still willing to give him a chance.

Guggenheim may leave the book due to his busy schedule?
I'm tempted to say that if it comes to that just cancel the book and give up on this generation of young mutants.

I'm tempted to say that if it comes to that just cancel the book and give up on this generation of young mutants.I'd prefer them to just blow up the current roster and re-integrate more of the New squad back in (along with some of the background kids like Loa or Trance). If that requires another relaunch and/or title change, so be it, but I want my Hellion, Nezhno, heck even Surge (gotta have someone to hate on other than Ink) back.

Giving up on this crew, ala Gen X, shouldn't be on the table. There are plenty of the kids who i'd rather not see focused on... but there are many like Hellion, Elixir, Surge, Rockslide, Prodigy and Mercury who SHOULD be getting more time than they have.
I say we vote Pixie back to her supporting role and put some deserving NXM back to the front lines.
While i haven't been exactly psyched about Young X-Men at any point in its run so far, at least Santo, Dust, and Vic are getting some love by being in the main cast of a book.

First off I did not read the first five issues, but I have really enjoyed the 6th and 7th issues. I also think it is possibly true that I will enjoy the first five issues now that I know what was really going on. All I had read about the story when it first was coming out was that Cyclops was asking the students to kill the New Mutants, something he would never do.
With the current issues I am very happy that Dani and Berto are helping out (even though I really wanted to see Magma) and that we are at least seeing Santo, Vic, and Sooyara somewhere. I like many would prefer to see any of the old characters instead of Ink, especially Prodigy, Match and Bling! (who could serve just as well as an antagonist).
To be honest though it does not sound much like Guggenheim will be on the book much longer, so we will probably see a completely different roster if Marvel did decide to continue with this title.

As a supporter of this book since the beginning, I think I am owed a Wind Dancer appearance, Guggenheim!

Well if Guggenheim had to leave, which I wouldn't get too worked up about yet, I think Cebulski would be the ideal person to take over. He's been regularly involved in the X-Office since Messiah Complex and primarily has written/will write New X-Men/New Mutants characters so he seems prefect to step in.
Surge, Moonstar, Magik, Mercury, and whoever appears in X-Infernus. Seems like the prefect guy to me.

Well.....i found that statement by Guggenheim to be..well not angry...but a bit disgruntled.
The title has been put through the ringer, everyone.
If the comic keeps growing as it is, i want Guggenheim to stay on it. i want the cast to stay relatively the same. If that means Ink..so be it. i am tired of the youth comic always being the one that has to go through all the upheaval. While change and mutability has often serviced the X-Men well, i really think that the youth title could use a bit of consistency for awhile.

I want Guggs to stay!!!!!!!!!!!
Really, I'm just waiting for the art situation to get better. I wasn't too big on Paquette, I adore Olivier's Greymalkin, and the upcoming artist has a great Anole, but no one's really getting them on point for me yet! I really want some kinetic artists. I'd really love to see Clayton Henry draw some of the students other than the Hellions (with whom he did a great job on).
I miss him EVEN THOUGH HE WAS TOTALLY WRONG FOR 'X-MEN' THAT ONE TIME.

The title was put through the wringer because it was BAD.
I'm tired of the youth books going through upheaval when they're good, when they're not so much I don't mind it. If the youth title is going to get some consistency I'd rather it be when the book is consistently good instead of consistently mediocre.

I'm still kind of skeptical on this series but the sense of honesty I got from reading this is refreshing... I may just start reading based on that

*sighs* I've tried to like this book, I wnat to like this book, but I just can't. Which is personally disappointing, as now Anole's in it. My second fave X-character after X-23. I don't seem to be able to enjoy the book, mostly as I don't care for any of the other characters (perhaps Rockslide a little...) or the storylines...
I wish he'd used the NXM kids and not these. There was no need to add two other characters when there was plenty he could have used already: Hellion, Mercury, Surge, Elixir, Pixie, Match, Loa, Trance, Indra, etc.

Well now that bitter business of the first arc has been spat out, and we've gotten a nice Anole-flavoured mouthwash with a hint of Donald Pierce-Dust interaction genius, I would be pretty annoyed if Guggenheim packed up and left.
I do wish it would have Surge. Needs more action-ladies (so glad Blindfold isn't being Sarah Connored any more). And I don't get why everyone adores Greymalkin. I prefer Ink, cuz. And that's not a statement of Ink-adoration.
But really, now, if not perfect, this book is really refreshing and, well, fun to read!
EDIT: Could do with more Johansson, however.

i think people, in general, prefer Greymalkin because his mystery has more appeal.....Cypher references...opaque eyes...being hundreds of years old...where he came from...etc etc. He was also kinda unconventionally cute in the last issue :).
Ink is a thug with attempted anti-hero traits. His word usage ("cuz") grates on many as well. i feel he has been written better in the last two issues.
Nonetheless..much of it comes down to this: One character has gradually been introduced to the reader, bit by bit. The other was shoved down our throats like a spicy tamale. That often doesn't work, especially in a comic that was the result of a tough transition for many readers.

See this guy, this guy gets it ,both Trance and Rockslide have:
Cool powers
'splosions and Astral Projection
A clique role
The jerk and The gossip.
That all that I could think up on the spot but you, you get the point.

Neither new character is particularly interesting to me, but at least Greymalkin doesn't annoy me quite like Ink (tho, I assume, if Ink wasn't there, my ire would probably switch to Greymalkin by default). I just hope Greymalkin gets more interesting moving forward, or else he's going on my blacklist.
Oh, and I hope they elucidate his powers some more. I mean, super strength in the dark? totally lame. I hope that's not all (and if it is, the squad had better not find itself miraculously getting thrown into a dark hole every mission so that Greymalkin's powers suddenly become incredibly useful); this team needs some ranged fighters (there are no energy casters on the actual junior team, only 'Berto).

At the moment I prefer Ink. I did prefer Greymalkin at first but the revelations from issue 6 make him seem much less interesting to me at the moment, while Ink went from annoying be pretty well developed.
Also has anyone else noticed that Guggenheim isn't relying on his verbal ticks as much? Really found those grating.
