Mark Evanier (http://www.newsfromme.com/archives/2008_10_23.html#016080) reports the passing of longtime comics fan Tom Fagan, best known to us as the father of and primary force behind the annual Rutland, Vermont, Halloween Parade. It was, of course, in this capacity, that he appeared in 1970s issues of The Avengers, Batman, Freedom Fighters, Justice League of America, Thor, et al. I don't know about the rest of you but as a teen/young adult, I'd have sold my soul to be in Rutland on October 31. God bless, Mr. Fagan, and rest in peace.

I didn't realize that he was that old. Yeah, he's about the only "character" that appeared in both Marvel and DC comics back in the 70s. At first I thought he was fictional...
Rich Morrissey (sp?), Jerry Bails, Tom Fagan... lots of the old time fans are gone.

Yep. Though at least Morrissey has shown up, after a fashion, in the latest issues of the LOSH as a tribute from Jim Shooter.

Back in 1971 or so, the memorable Batman story, "Night of the Reaper" brought Tom Fagan to four-color-life. I remember thinking while I was reading it how cool it was that this apparently responsible, middle-aged (at least by my standards then) guy could be so open and enthusiastic about still loving comics. It gave me hope then that I wouldn't just grow out of a love I'd nurtured since I was a little kid.
Definitely read the Rutland Herald's obit Mark Evanier has linked to on his site. Tom Fagan doesn't disappoint!
My story is exactly the same.
Just like the rest of us, I’d read those various Rutland stories and all I could think about was how badly I wanted to be invited to Tom Fagan’s party.
Never met the man, but never the less, Fagan is one of the people who brought me into fandom, just by letting me know that fandom existed in the first place.
My sympathies to his family and friends, a respectful rest in peace to Tom, and most of all if there is an afterlife, I hope he’s at the best costume party in heaven.
