I give you 3 choices.
1) Reboot
2) Pretend 3 didn't exist
3) Go on from 3

Options 1 or 2. Choice 3 only works with a strong retcon: no murder of Cyclops, no dead Prof. X, no "Wolvie Sue", etc.

The big prob with a reboot will be the loss of jackman as wolverine he really is amazing in the role imo he is calm and friendly one minute but when danger threatens its like a sitwch is turned that turns him into an ice cold rage killer. Patrick stweart was also amazing but he did seem kind of old before the end.

I say 3, but with the return of Cyclops, putting things as close to where the comics are now. As for Jackman no matter if it's 1/2/3 he and Halle Berry won't do it. I'd love to but i doubt it.

Probably a reboot, so that it ends up falling into the "Cinematic Marvel Universe."
If they go with option 3, I wouldn't bring Cyclops back. Just introduce Havok instead. Cyclops' death leaves a perfect opening for it (Ie: "What the hell happened to my brother?")

is there gonna be an x-men 4? maybe they could focus on the second-tier characters and have a young x-men sort of film, or they could reboot it into something more like astonishing x-men.
Equally they could have an origin film with the forming of the x-men with a snowy ice-man.

Reboot with character changes as necessary. I like Jackman but, does every xmen movie have to have wolverine? He is a great character and I love that he has his own movie. I just think that xmen is about constant change and updating. So...do it. I say reboot with the original 5 and add during the movie and as needed. I'm tired of comic movies written with money as the driving force. Certain roles, Storm, were used as personal launchers for the actors. Halle Berry did a great job but, she practically re-wrote xmen 3 to allow her more money and screen time. When it becomes about the actor, and not the movie, I'm not interested. I'll watcha Halle Berry film when I want to see just her. I want an XMEN film for now.

I've always thought it might be nice to expand the franchise with a "Cyclops and Phoenix" spinoff where instead of dying they are transported to the future to raise Cable and fight Apocalypse. Didn't like that Cyke somehow was always written as a loser when Wolverine was in the same room so it might be nice to see Cyke cut loose in an apocalpytic future!

I don't think you could do an X-Men movie without Professor X or Cyclops, so I guess a reboot is in order.
Although, since Cyclops' death wasn't shown just implied, they could continue on by making up something with Sinister having saved him or resurrecting him. X-Men 4 could begin with the team in disarray under Storm and Wolverine's leadership.

Interesting idea. It could start with Emma finding Scotts body with his mind in psychic disarray... she fixes him up, bring him to the Mansion... and we could have a twist of the first two Astonishing teams!
Cyclops (found/resurrected)
Emma Frost (new)
Wolverine (existing)
Storm (existing)
Colossus (existing)
Kitty (existing)
Beast (existing)

Rebooting only a few years after a hugely successful movie isn't a good business decision.
I would move forward, with a new main villain (likely Apocalypse) and a new actress playing Storm. There's already a setup for Xavier's return, I wouldn't deal with him and Cylcops in the same story.

Reboot. Second option, ignore completely the 3rd one. Otherwise, meh.

I say move on and recast if necessary.
X-Men 3 while terrible didn't do that much damage to franchise. Cyclops was killed off camera so bringing him back wouldn't be too hard and Xavier was shown to come back.
They also don't need to bring back every character. They could build a movie around the best possible lineup of characters for that story.

Wait 10 years and reboot with the original 5 (Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, and Iceman) in the Marvel Movie Universe. Sadly, we then wouldn't have Patrick Stewart as Xavier. That's the only one I would be sad about losing cast wise.
And no Wolverine. Till maybe the 3rd one.
Ignore 3, im not sure why it was a movie.
I still give it points for the most expensive villian quip ever though.

There was no Cyclops body, so bringing him back is not too difficult. We saw Jean "die" at the end of 2 and bringing her back wasn't very difficult to accomplish.
Patrick Stewart is Prof. X. But Xavier is most often a hindrance to the narrative, not a compliment. Each movie, thus far, you have the writers specifically going out of their way to find how they can "incompacitate" Xavier before getting into the action.
The one scene he has even been a factor in was from X1 where Magneto, Sabretooth and Toad are in the standoff with the police and Xavier takes over Sabretooth and Toads minds.
That was it. The rest of the films have him getting eliminated pretty early on in the scripts. Lets free up some space in the first act and just have Xavier in a cameo role.
all I ask for is a return of Cyclops
no more Wolverine
no more Storm
some Sinister action
and a Havok-Cyke showdown.
You could reboot with Prof X waking up like "goddam that was a horrible dream....why was my brother Vinnie Jones?"
and proceed with O5

I think with Marvel doing their own movies now, a reboot is inevitable. Necessary even, if they intend to have mutants in their culluloid universe.
It's also a relatively safe property to fall back on, if they have a flop or two, and I don't think they can actually make a sequel to the existing trilogy, legally speaking.

They can make a sequel to the existing trilogy. They (Marvel) own the properties. I don't know if the rights for X-Men has reverted (or even will revert) back to Marvel anytime soon. Either way, Marvel is going to be more involved, I hope, in the franchises progress. Marvel cannot afford to simply write the first 3 films off either. They, and in particular Hugh Jackman, are the reason they are in the position that they are in. You can argue the Spiderman franchise as well.
X-Men can survive without rebooting, but they need to do a "2nd class" "All New X-Men" "New Mutants" type of soft reboot.
The Singer storyline was chopped to bits by the end of that 3rd movie and the importance and allegory has been overcooked.
I know some people want to reboot it and go with the original lineup but I feel that would flop.

But even after the license expires, Marvel will not own the rights to rights to Magneto as written by David Hayter, nor will they be able to use the costume designed by Louise Mingenbach. They want to use that, they better be prepared to pay extra.

Very very true. X-Men is probably the most plausible Marvel vehicle for resurrections, given their power levels.
Patrick Stewart is Prof. X. But Xavier is most often a hindrance to the narrative, not a compliment. Each movie, thus far, you have the writers specifically going out of their way to find how they can "incompacitate" Xavier before getting into the action.
Xavier's body switch could provide several ways to deal with that problem. Xavier could lose his powers, which would make for an interesting conflict. If he was no longer a mutant could the other X-Men still follow Xavier's lead? Would he feel out of place? Would he want to lead a normal life with Moira? That could set up a leadership conflict or it could give them an explanation to write him out of the next film entirely.

I would hope that Wolverine getting his own movies would free up the X-franchise to at least explore the possibility of a Wolverine-less film. Like Jackman and all but Wolverine has a habit of making writers forget that this is supposed to be a team dynamic, not a one-man show.
And maybe with Wolverine out of the picture Cyke could get a legitimate treatment.
