hey guys can anyone help me in determinig which batman and joker story arcs i should buy/follow..i'd really appreciate your help since im new to this

Batman Chronicles volume 1-6. It reprints the original stories from 1939 to 1943. about a dozen classic Joker stories in these volumes and you get to see the evolution of Batman as a character.

strange apparitions...? is that a Joker story?
and whats "detective"...do you mean detective comics?

"Detective" is the first TPB of Paul Dini's run on Detective Comics, collecting issues #821-826.

I would also like to add Gotham Central: Unresolved Targets as a great Joker story.

You may also be interested in Brian Azzarello's new Joker graphic novel that is coming out in a couple weeks.

I think there's a Joker story in there, "The Laughing Fish". Good story.

Though, it's apparently also reprinted in the Greatest Joker stories, so.... It's still a very good GN though.
