I've known about this for some time now and to be honest theres no other more apt to andle a science fiction thriller with the scope and depth and of Ghost in the Shell. I know, I know. This is Hollywood and with that knowledge comes trepidation about how faithful an adatation this will be, But, guys, its completely out of our hands as mere fans. With the more that capable Speilberg at the helm we can expect a quality film that will be a great tribute the anime. Will it be a perfect translation from anime to silver screen? Very doubtful. But then agian its far too early to make any conlsusive statements.

No god no, why?!?!Why the horror? Isn't Spielberg one of the better directors out there? To my knowledge his reputation isn't tarnished like Uwe Boll's.

Are the Wachowski brothers still working?

While this could go wrong in any number of ways, at least it makes a lot more sense than remaking DBZ or Cowboy Bebop.

y'know, I didn't like "Ghost in the Shell" all that much.

short answer: "Good luck, maybe they'll improve on the original!:

long answer:

I didn't like the panning shots on "thinking heads". I have a tremendous amount of respect for the directorial skill of Mamoru Oshii--but the pacing in the original GitS bothered me. too much imbalance between the action and the talking scenes. the dub was also mind-numbingly bad.

moreover, it wasn't all that ambitious or ground-breaking in terms of concepts/conceits. yet another "a robot becomes self-aware" sort of flick. honestly, I think Steven Spielberg could IMPROVE on the original movie.

a lot of people ADORE GitS but I'm not one of them. for me it suffered from the same fundamental problem as the DBZ anime-- very poor visual pacing and lingering on shots for too damned long!

I understand why there were landscape panning shots and the basic "deep" symbolism of nearly every shot. but I sharply disagree with how the movie was handled.

compared to "Uresei Yatsure II: Beautiful Dreamer", the "Patlabor" movies, or even "Angel's Egg" I found that GitS just didn't measure up for me as a cinematic experience.

bad pacing, nearly humorless in its self-importance, and not all that thought-provoking either-- it was just a mediocre movie. not terrible, not nearly as great as people told me it was going to be.

Required scenes:

The Major shoots someone through a window while thermoptically camoflauged, then drops off the side of the building into the night.

The Major rips her own arms off in the process of opening something heavily locked.

What else we got? Those scenes have appeared in every single GitS series... if they don't show up in the live-action movie, then someone's not doing their job.

Seeing as how this Hollywood attempting another anime adaptaion you shouldn't get your hops up and you should expect poorly redone versions of the scenes you mentioned, if they're included in the film, that is..

It should be much better than Cowboy Bebop starring Keanu Reeves as Spike.

That wasn't a rumor?

As the movie, this could at least be a decent adaption of the movie. Spielberg at least knows how to make decent action movies, so a potential bomb could be avoided with a little luck.

If Spielberg ends up directing the film, maybe he can give the story the heart it desperately needs.

Well, the manga is different from the movies is different from the TV show. Hell, the first manga is different from the second. I enjoy all of them. Oshii put his stamp on Shirow's GitS. Then the makers of the TV show did theirs. So what's an American remake by Speilberg? Another version of GitS. I'm curious how it turns out.

Nothing I've read said it's false, but it's there is no information on it past August 1st of 2008.

Welcome to the movie waiting game. Even stuff that isn't in development hell takes a long time to gestate and actually go into production. Even then that doesn't mean it will get made. It all depends on what else the producersn and directors have on their slate. Pretty much, there is no way of knowing how this will happen or even if it will happen.
