The complete 66-issue run of The X-Men is available in two different reprint formats: in six volumes of Marvel Masterworks (hardcover, full color, retails around $50 @)) and in three volumes of Essential Classic X-Men (softcover, black and white, retails around $15 @). You can order either series online, usually at a decent discount.
Also, although they're out of print now you might be able to find a set of the "40 Years of X-Men" DVD collection, which features scans of every issue of the book through #461 (including letters pages and ads).
Happy hunting!

They've reprinted them numerous times. Masterworks, Essentials, Omnibus, etc.
If you want the whole shebang and you don't mind reading comics on a computer screen, there's a CD-ROM set that has the first 500 or so issues on it. Personally I don't like reading on a computer screen, and if you don't there's plenty of other options.
Now when you say you're looking for the "first series of x-men/uncanny x-men", do you mean you want the very first issues (the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby issues with Prof. X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast, and Angel)? Or the rebooted title which started with Giant Size X-Men #1/X-Men #94 and introduced Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, Banshee, Colossus, etc (done by Chris Claremont/Dave Cockrum/John Byrne)?
Reprints of those early issues are a bit more scarce. Besides the CD, you have 2 options. Marvel Masterworks, which are $50 hardcovers reprinting about 11 issues apiece in color. There are 6 volumes of X-Men Masterworks that reprint the 66 issues that comprise the original run of X-Men comics. The other option (and the one that I highlt recommend) is the Marvel Essentials, which are $17, black and white books that reprint 20-30 issues apiece. There are two volumes of Essential Classic X-Men that reprint the first 54 issues of the aforementioned 66 issues.
If you're looking for the rebooted X-Men title (which most people are), you have 3 options. The Masterworks books, of which there are thus far 5 volumes reprinting X-Men #94-140. The Essentials, which there are thus far 8 volumes reprinting from X-Men #94-243 (again by far the best value, and they give you so much for your dollar - but again B&W). Your final option is the Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1, a giant oversized, color book reprinting Giant Size X-Men #1, X-Men #94-131, and Annual 3 for $100.
There you have it. I think you'll find most people will recommend you the Essentials books even though they're in black and white and reprinted on a newspaper-type paper. For $17 for 500 pages they're easily one of the best deals your gonna find in a comic shop.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask. And here's an excellent website telling you what tpb collections collect what issues:

EDIT: Beat to it!

Let's not forget the fourth option. Classic X-Men (which was later re-titled X-Men Classic) was a series that reprinted Giant Size X-Men #1 and X-Men #94-206 one issue at a time. The early issues of the series also included new stories to go along with the reprints.

If anyone is confused by the disappearance and reappearance of this thread, it turned out that the original poster was a spammer, so a supermod banned him and deleted the thread. However, I've chosen to undelete this thread because there are some legitimate posts in it.

three volumes of Essential Classic X-Men (softcover, black and white, retails around $15 @).
Ideally, that is. Going by the changing Amazon dates, Vol. 3 was originally scheduled for early October, then pushed to January, & at the moment is supposedly set to come out 3/18.
(And Essential Sub-Mariner vol 1, originally solicited for 9/17 -- my birthday! -- is now going to come out ... whenever Marvel gets around to it, I guess.)

What was he spamming for? I mean, I'm sure that he was a spammer but I can't for the life of me see why he posted what was a perfectly normal and quite reasonable question.
What was in it for him?

Probably he had spamming links in his signature.
