Hey, I've been reading most of Civil War lately (just short of She-Hulk #8, Wolverine #42 and Thunderbolts #103 but I'll get around to reading them soon). What struck me as curious after seeing the prominence of the connectable spines in Marvel crossover titles recently (Dissassembled, House of M and Decimation) is how Civil War will be managed as a TPB collection.
Seeing as I'm not buying them as comics (friends providing the reading there) I would potentially buy these trades but due to the non-linear fashion the event seems to be following it would be difficult to create an accurate representation of it through trades. So how would you go about doing it?
Personally:
Civil War Prelude (7 issues)
Civil War (7 issues)
Civil War: Front Line (10 issues)
Civil War: Spider-Man (7 issues)
Civil War: Fantastic Four (6 issues)
Civil War: New Avengers (5 issues)
Civil War: Wolverine (6 issues)
Civil War: X-Men (4 issues)
Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways (4 issues)
Civil War: Enforcers (6 issues)
- Heroes for Hire #1-3
- Thunderbolts #103-105
Civil War: Captain America vs. Iron Man (5 issues)
- Captain America #22-24
- Iron Man v4 #13-14
Civil War: Punisher & Cable/Deadpool (6 issues)
- Punisher: War Journal volume 2 #1-3
- Cable/Deadpool #30-32
World of Civil War (5 issues)
- She-Hulk v2 #8 [Legality of Civil War]
- Black Panther #18 [Wedding of the Century]
- X-Factor #8-9 [Civil War in Mutant Town]
- Daily Bugle: Civil War Edition (one-shot newspaper) [Civil War Overview]
Leaving no room for... Ms. Marvel #6-8 . But this is just my ranting of the techicalities of this awesome Marvel event... What do you think?

I think they'd be better served going with fewer, larger books, rather than more smaller ones, assuming the cost works out the same for the whole set either way. Civil War's a big event, and right now looking pretty darned successful - failing a lapse in quality from here to the end, I'd say putting the words 'Civil War' on the cover of a TPB would be a big incentive to buy. Given that, I think Marvel would be more likely to make bucks now (and potentially get new readers for ongoing titles) by compiling CW issues from several titles into single books, rather than separating them.
I'd pitch the TPBs at between 6-10 issues each - certainly nothing smaller than that, and only a couple larger (the largest TPB I own is roughly 11 issues - well, 9 and a big-ass annual - which is FF Visionaries vol.5). Guesstimating what would fit with what (which, of course, depends on the storylines, which in many cases we don't really know yet):
One point I think is 50/50 is whether to do a 'road to Civil War' TPB, or bundle the Road issues in with the rest of those titles. Either way has benefits - seeing as you pitched it the former way, I'll go the latter. And let's assume the rumours about Black Panther are true. So...
Civil War - New Avengers: The Illuminati, Civil War 1-7 (8 issues)
Civil War: Front Line - Front Line 1-10, Daily Bugle (11 issues)
Civil War: X-Men & X-Factor - CW: X-Men 1-4, X-Factor 8-9 (6 issues)
Civil War: Spider-Man - Amazing Spider-Man 529-538 (10 issues)
Civil War: Fantastic Four - Fantastic Four 536-543, Black Panther 18 (9 issues)
Civil War: Avengers - CW: Young Avengers & Runaways 1-4, New Avengers 21-25 (9 issues)
Civil War: Enforcers (neat title, by the way) - Cable/Deadpool 1-3, Heroes for Hire 1-3, Ms Marvel 6-7, She-Hulk 8, Thunderbolts 103-105 (13 issues - pretty big, but it seems like these titles belong together thematically as 'enforcers', so it may be better than splitting them up)
Civil War: Captain America vs Iron Man - Captain America 22-24, Iron Man 13-14 (5 issues - a small one, but damned if I can think of what else to lump in with them)
Civil War: Pissed-Off Loners - Punisher: War Journal 1-3, Wolverine 42-47 (9 issues)
And unless I've missed someone, that's the lot. Nine TPBs in all - a decent load, but not so many that it'd be off-putting to a serious (but not crazy) buyer. And there's no 'miscellaneous' TPB, which people might overlook if they're just after the 'big names'.

Well with 81 (i think) issues including 'Road to' issues, theer are DEFINITELY going to be more than 3.
HoM had 7 or 8 I think, and Civil WAR is WAY bigger.

I guess it depends what you mean by 'the entire story'. I think it's extremely probable there'll be a single TPB for the seven Civil War issues, and another for the ten Front Line issues - those two, together with the Prologue TPB (one assumes that'll be Illuminati plus the Spider-Man and Fantastic Four 'Road' issues) will certainly be a complete enough picture of Civil War that further TPBs wouldn't be necessary, if one didn't want them. Frankly, the Civil War miniseries could stand on its own - I don't think the Road books are especially vital to understanding it, and Front Line isn't actually integral to the story, though for my money it's the strongest title of the whole lot.

I'd just like to have everything in a nice little package. I was so happy when they published the complete age of apocalypse. But yeah, I agree with your asssessment. Like you, I also think Front line is an integral part to the story. Hopefully though, they'll start focusing more on the journalistic aspect through the eyes of Sally and Ben. Of course they have to keep showing what is happening to Speedball, but that what I want them to focus on.

EDIT: I did some research and I found this: The House of M crossover was about 50 issues with the Prelude in Excalibur. This was all collected in 9 TPBs. If Civil War is 81 issues, that's 38% bigger a crossover than HoM. I have 18 tpbs down for civil war, which is 50% more than HoM. So I'm about 12% off but I think that it's very plausible that the way I have listed can be accurate. :)

Well, this is what I want, not what I expect. (Since most of the tie-ins will be bundled under the name: IE 'Spider-Man; The War at Home'" with a Civil war logo on them.) Props to Miss Kitty for being almost totally right ;)
Civil War : Civil War 1-7 (7issues)
Civil War: Front Line - Front Line 1-10, Daily Bugle (11 issues)
Civil War: X-Men & X-Factor - CW: X-Men 1-4, X-Factor 8-9 (6 issues)
Civil War: Spider-Man: The War At Home - Amazing Spider-Man 532-537 (7 issues)
Civil War: Fantastic Four: A House Divided - Fantastic Four 538-543, possibly Black Panther depending on IF.... you know what. (6 or 7 issues)
Civil War: Hero Hunters ) - Cable/Deadpool 1-3, Heroes for Hire 1-3, Thunderbolts 103-105 (9 issues)
Civil War: Enforcers: Iron Man 13-14, Ms Marvel 6-7, She-Hulk 8, New Avengers 23-25 (PENDING Confirmation on Spider-Woman and Sentry) (7 issues)
Civil War: Secret Avengers Captain America 22-24, New Avengers 21-22, Young Avengers/Runaways 1-4 (8 issues)
Civil War: Vendetta (Wolverine 42-47, Punisher War Journal 1-3)
See, the major difference with mine is that rather than a Cap versus IM one I split it into one for each side ;) I'm actually kinda split. I know they'd never split up the New Avengers that way, but I feel it would be cooler if each side had their own title ;)

I just don't see why they would put some comics that are civil war related in a TPB with other comics that don't have anything to do w/ them. I'm going to say that the civil war tie in issues for comics such as X-Factor, Cable/Deadpool, Heros for Hire (maybe) are going to be in their own TPB and not mixed together with other issues to make a TPB. I think the only reason why they stuck Ironman and FF together for HoM and the HoM TPB that had Wolverine and the others in it, is because most of the HoM stories were mainly issues that didn't have anything to do with the story after HoM was over. Just like how Cap HoM issue was with one of the HoM TPB instead of being in the Cap TPB because it wouldn't have fit. Now I'm hoping that there's no "and the world went white" type ending in civil war #6 so that in issue #7 everything is back to normal, parker has his secret identity back, there was no samford massacre and the new warriors are all alive. But as for the civil war tie ins for X-Factor and Cable/Deadpool, they're pretty big issues that help develop the story (the X team found out what caused M day and quicksilver "joined" the team, and Cable and Deadpool are starting to split) I just see those issues and ones that are helping develop the story for other issues, will be in their own title's TPB.

I disagree, I think they will mix the titles so the whole TPB is CW. They want people new to comics to be able to read the CW and don't want to scare them away w/ all the other non-CW issues.
I also think some of these suggestions are a bit long. You rarely see a TPB over 8 issues. Most are 6 or 5.
Edit: I also can't wait for them to come out (as I recently switched to trades for everything but X-Men). Do we have any idea of when? February or March?

I think that they should do something like Civil War Vol 1 and have the different issues in the order that you would want to read them instead of having them seperated in seperate books. I know that isn't how it is normally done but I think that would be the easiest to read and understand.

Eugh! God, no! I think Frontline hgad a strong start and gets worse every issue. It seems (to me) to be the most heavily biased of ALL the titles, except maybe New Avengers. For example, Sally gives a story to her pro-registration newspaper publisher and he stands by her loyally, even to the point where they get arrested. Ben gives a story to his anti-registration publisher and gets fired. Sally is totally commited to anti-reg, Ben is half-hearted in his support for pro-reg, when major heroes take on groups of capekillers you are supposed to want them to win yet when a group of rubbish heroes are attacked by capekillers it is heavily slanted to say the capekillers are the bad guys. Plus, 'The Accused' is total garbage; IMO it shouldn't even be in Civil War, since it has no connection with the war itself. Oh, and let's not forget the stories at the back, such as Registration being compared with internment. Oh, and the HIDEOUSLY mischarecertized Green Goblin. Naa, Frontline is one of the weakest titles.

How the hell do you read these all in tpb though? Do you read the main Civil War tpb and then back track through the other ones, or do you read the first part of Civil War, then read the first part of Spider-Man, FF, Iron Man, etc?
Seems like a very strange way to market something that will no doubt have strong sales in the bookstores.

It depends what they do but I would expect a slipcased super-sized version to come out in a few years though with this type of print run I have doubts. It'll get a CDROM maybe an Omnibus(which should go to Anhilation)

I think that they should do something like Civil War Vol 1 and have the different issues in the order that you would want to read them instead of having them seperated in seperate books. I know that isn't how it is normally done but I think that would be the easiest to read and understand.
You don't know how much I would prefer it like this than any other way. But alas, it shall not be. *sigh* :(
I actually wanted to post this very statement once before but feared being mocked. Oh, how I really would enjoy being able to read the entire story straight in its entirety in TPB form. If only it could happen along side the regualar continuity stories (ie Amazing Spider-Man, Civil War: Front Line, Thunderbolts)...

how aobut a complete age of apocalypse type of set up. This is a huge crossover and the read order is kind of important so I think 5-6 trades providing all comics in read order would be the best way to go

Again, I wish it were so, but we already of confirmation of 4 tpbs that only include between 5-7 issues. And two that are confirmed only have 1 crossover issue in each. (BP & She-Hulk)

It was in Astonishing X-Men #6. Nick Fury was skeptical if that it was in fact really Colossus, and not just some clone or robot or something. All of the X-Men had already come to the conclusion that he was really Peter through their various methods. I just liked the quote and so I slapped it down there. :D

I say it's more than close enough. The whole thing happens during CW. When I read it, I consider it part of CW.

Yeah, you can basically consider Spider-MAn unmasked as part of Civil War. The editor of FN Spidey certainly does- in the letters page someone asked if they were going to do a CW tie-in and the editor said they were reading one. Spidey Unmasked occurs at the same time as CW and deals with the reprucussions of something that happened during CW, so it's kinda a tie-in. But the difference is; if you like Spidey and you aren't buying CIvil War, there's no way in Hell you'll miss 'Unmasked'. It will also attract many casual people who walk into a comic store. THey may not have heard of CW, but the title 'Spider-Man Unmasked'.... well....

I know that it isn't on the offical list for CW but I still consider it to be an important part for any Spidey fan because it shows more of what he is going through without Tony always being around. I would really like to see Spidey back on his own and say screw Tony. Also get back to the old costume!

No, I'm not arguing that Spidey Unmasked isn't a crucial reprecusion coming out of CW, I'm just saying that because it isn't an official tie-in, I didn't include it in my list of tpbs. I'm sure there will be one or two tpbs focusing on this, but you won't see them on this list. :)

I don't. The new costume looks amazing, and is amazing. Just because Iron Man gave it to him, doesn't mean he should chuck away what is clearly a huge advantage. He just needs to shut down any and all privacy compromising transmissions that are in there.

Isn't an official tie-in? What? It's a piece of fan fiction? It shouldn't have it's own TPB, it should simply be part of the Civil War: Spider-man TPB.

No way- there's already 6-8 issues in the TPB. Adding four from Sensational and three from FNS would complicate it. While I bet they do them as the next Sensational and FNS TPBs, they really should make a 'Spider-Man Unmasked' TPB with jsut the Unmasked tie-ins in it.

Hey, I just got the Civil War TPBs, because I like to read my comic in that form. I got most of them, Civil War, Frontline, Road to, and all the team ones, like Thunderbolts, Heroes for Hire, etc.
My question is, what order should I read these in? Any help is appreciated.

There is no perfect way to read them. I would say you should read Road to Civil War first, the main series, and then the tie-ins however you want.

CIVIL WAR. After that, whatever order you want.
The basic Millar/McNiven CIVIL WAR trade is the main story. The rest of the the trades fill in the blanks and expand on various elements of the main story, but there's no real overall order to them.

This pretty much. Unless you really like a certain character/group, it's not worth getting any other civil war tie-ins/minis.
