Hey Gang,
I was trying to explain why there aren't a lot of Mignola Hellboy pages for sale to a new friend and I had guessed that there were about 450 Mignola drawn Hellboy pages in existance.

But being a bit unhappy with that generalization, I decided to put together a list of issues where Mike has drawn our favorite red guy. I thought I would throw my list up here and let you tell me where I made mistakes (and I would love any help in confirming these page counts, especially since I don't have every single thing on this list). Heck, there may be entire issues that I don't know about...

As comments come in, I will revise this first post.

I decided not to count book plates that Mike has done, nor to count "sketch plates" from his sketchbooks (or covers, posters, coasters, non-panel advertisements, letter page headers, etc). They are all beautiful, but they are a lot harder to pin down....

So without further ado....

If these numbers are right, there are 939 pages of Hellboy panel art. So in just three more comics (after Molache) we get to celebrate Big Red's 1000'th b-day!

Thanks Nick, Kees, and Bertowud!

p.s. I have bolded the page numbers that are confirmed.... Yeah, there aren’t a lot left (double thanks to Nick)...

p.p.s. I am curious if you compare the original comics to the reprints, if Mike has redrawn/added any pages over the years? Also, I would be curious to see how the epilogues break out from the comics (page-wise). If anyone spots those kind of subtle differences, they add to the count and you get a gold star!

These may have been included in the tpb epilogues, but I think you're missing Next Men #21, SDCC Comics #2, the CBG insert where he 1st fights Von Klempt & Kriegraffe, the Varcolac and of course, "Hi, my name is Hellboy".

Hey Nick, thanks! I can't believe I forgot those.
1 - Any idea when those DHP adverts for Varcolac were printed?
2 - Which "Dark Horse Book of..." was the Lion and the Hydra printed in?
3 - Any idea where/when "Hi, my name is Hellboy" is? It is just one page, right?
Thanks again,
M

p.s. the total is up to 984 pages now with Nick's contributions...

1. I want to say the Varcolac was published originally in DH Extra #33-37 (I may be way off)? But isn't it collected in the RHOD tpb?

2. Book o' Monsters

3. 93 or 94. It was a one pager in Previews' Celebrate Diversity.

Dudes, this is cool. Although I propose: designs and stuff have mostly been done rather in the same neat tradition as the sketchbook plates so for original art pages they could be included, not? Although yeah, that makes things harder.
But I started making a list with leaving out what you already got covered. This is 1993 up to 'start of 1995':
- 1993: Freedonia Funnyworks 10th anniversary card #9: trading card;
- 1993: Dime Press ‘Magazzino Bonnelliano’ #4: Hellboy / Nathan Never cover;
(- 1993: Next Men #21 = cover + 10 pages;)
- 1994: Hellboy poster as reprinted in SOD trade;
- 1994: Wizard: The Guide to Comics #??: Creator’s Portfolio (insert) card: Hellboy;
- 1994: Wizard: The Guide to Comics #31: Hellboy as featured on gatefold cover;
- 1994: The Great Eastern Conventions’ Third Charity Art Auction: exclusive Hellboy illo;
- 1994: Hellboy unused T-shirt design?;
- 1994/1995: Musings #4 cover: Hellboy;

EDIT: Isn't the Previews insert a fold-out, so basically a two-pager - as I don't own such I wouldn't know of course :D.

I think if you get into all pinups & covers, you're asking for a world of hurt. There are way too many to get an accurate count of. I think leaving it to just interior story pages works best. My 2 cents. :smile:

Thanks Kees!! Yeah, there is a lot of hard to pin down stuff out there. So I added a disclaimer that I am not going to try to nail down everything that Mignola has ever drawn with Hellboy on it.

We all know that list goes off the deep end.... lighters, product packaging, heck even drink coasters!

Instead, I am looking to nail down how many interior pages there are (or anything with sequencial panels... like "the corpse" or "my name is hellboy").

Speaking of "My Name is Hellboy" here is a link to the original art!

Feel free to tell him how he is one lucky #*$#^@!

Nick, Since the "My Name is Hellboy" page is an ad for Wake the Devil, I am guessing that it came out the year before the series. Does that fit your memory?

Lastly, I also bolded up the page counts that I know are accurate. There are a ton to go, so if anyone wants to spend a quick 10 minutes and pick a random issue to count, I would be very grateful. I have a hunch that we will get to that magic 1000 pages with "In the Chapel Of Molache"....

My goal is the get all the pages counted before it comes out, so that we can celebrate this amazing creation's 1000 page birthday!

That page is awesome.
I was bidding on it way back when Pat Brousseau sold it on eBay.
Looking back now, I should have held out.

According to my own collected info, pinning a 'cover date' (instead of actual publication date) to the "Celebrate Diversity: Hi my name is Hellboy"-ad, inserted into (Diamond) Previews #?? would be october 1994. This being a rather early disclosed Wake the Devil ad: as WtD became a 5-part series reaching publication a tad 'less soon' than 1995... =P
Also: what about Ghost / Hb (3 or 4 covers - 1 or 2 rejected, Savage Dragon / Hb: (2 pg), the extra pages in SOD ltd HC (15)? (To not mention the printed promo illo's, hellmail illo's, 'pinup section', back cover illo's, alternate covers ~ man we could also go for 1999 pages it would almost seem... But no! let's stick to finishing it as proposed firstly :wink:)

Well, that must''ve been old gum on your socks, man.
Thanks Chairos for the link and you Nick, for sharing.
And consider this: maybe the moral is that Jacob may feel glad for not having *ended* you :smile: (I mean eBay-wise, biddingly)?

I've been leaving myself well away from handy USD paying tools, in fear of 'paperchasing disproportionately'. Now it seems MM is well out of my league anyway, and the Davises, Cortezes, Rousseau-x and Petersens of this world are luring me in...

Plus, if I'm not mistaken Mike redrew the Varcolac story so they'd look right for the trade, so you could count them twice.

Ok, so again if my math is right, there are 826 confirmed pages (not counting Moloch, HB/BM/SM or the junked Island pages). Once the others are confirmed it looks like we're still 100 or so pages away from 1,000. :cool:

Dang Nick!! Did you stay up all night counting? I love that you went the extra mile here. Now I have a mental image of the seasame street count stuck in my head...

One, ha ha ha... Two, ha ha ha....

I have updated everyone's comments (thanks a million) and I am going to count batman/hellboy/starman and tentatively going to count the unused island pages.... (although Mike definitely wouldn't count the Island pages)...

For those that want to get into the nitty gritty details, I have a hunch that Mike might have redrawn a page or two from the first couple series and probably added a few pages too (maybe even shuffled the order around a bit). As far as I am concerned, they all count! So if anyone is looking for a gold star....

hey guys,

so i was looking over the list that you have .. its a shame you dont count covers ... because off hand i counted about 110 ... but youre right it gets hard to agree on ... like would multiple TPB covers count ... like does adding a red stripe make it a new cover? .... so i agree that only internal story pages should count, but only because they are more easily verifiable. That being said here are a couple more additions we can add to the list...

In Wolves of Saint August there should be 40 pages, interior story pages, i think the Father Kelly 1961 page might have been skipped, i think it should count.

Also in Dark Horse Maverick 2001 (with Usagi Yojimbo on the cover) there is a Hellboy The Nuckelavee Pin-up on page 43 ... my understanding is that in one of the Odd jobs books there is a short story The Nucklavee ... and this goes with it. Does that make it interior story panels? Or is it just a Pin-up? I think it counts because of the 2 panels, and that makes it not just an orphaned image ... it has a story to it.

Then there is the corrected counting of Hellboy In The Chapel of Moloch - 24 pages

And the Darkness Calls Epilogue - 7 pages that was mentioned above

And B.P.R.D. "The Universal Machine" # 5 (2006) - 5 pages "Homunculus End"

So here's my tally (as of March 4 2009):

826 + 64 (Batman/Hellboy/Starman) + 1 (Wolves) + 1 (Nuckelavee) + 7 (Darkness Calls) + 24 (Moloch) + 5 (Universal Machine) = 928

(without counting The Island alternate pages)

Only 72 left to go!

-Jeremy

(There are also 4 pin ups in Hellboy the Animated series of comics ... including an awesome one of Hellboy as a boy listening to a story on the radio about The Lobster "Beware my claw, for ive come to inflict justice!")

Thanks for updating it Jeremy! Yep, just three comics to go.

Regarding your question about the red band and does that make it a new cover... Well my interest is from the original art side. So unless mike redrew it, I am not counting it. :)

Here is a weird piece of trivial! Mike has done way less splash pages than covers. (for those that don't know the lingo, a splash page is an interior page where the entire page is made up of only a single panel). In fact, in the middle of the run of Conquorer Worm, he had only done thirteen of them at that point. Compare that to a 100 plus covers! I was curious because I had a splash from that issue, and counted them up. I have number 13 :)

Maybe as a treat, Mike might throw in a double splash page to mark the 1000th hellboy page, hint, hint, hint....

Well, it can't hurt to try, right?

Plus as much as Mike loves Kirby, it would be cool to see him try his hand at a double splash page like Kirby loved to do.

Mighty valid point there, Chiaros :wink:.

On what to count as pages I'd say don't count unused art both as cards, prints and such, since they'd be not pages. However I feel all (alternate) covers should count, both as the full page promo's (as featured in SOD or the Art of HB). Should the international covers count, such as the French-only Box Full of Evil / Le Diable dans la Boite?
49805

Or this German promo one (from the SDCC Mezco: Heads figure):
49804

And then there's the magazine cover or page stuff, like the Wizard (full) Hellboy cover...? Keeping it simple will be best, yet with remaining complete enough too I feel.

The clearer the rules the more accurately we will be able to pin point the 1000th page when it gets drawn. I think going forward its important to clearly go over the rules so that everyone can know exactly what counts as a page and what doesn’t.

If anyone wants to add or change a rule feel free to contribute to the conversation and give your reasons:

Here is my list of what the rules currently seem to be:

The pages have to be…

1) Drawn by Mike Mignola
2) Take place in the Hellboy Universe (BPRD counts, Amazing Screw on Head does not)
3) and Be Interior Story Pages

4) No covers (there is over a hundred with variants and TPB covers ect)
5) No inside covers, table of contents, or letter columns
6) No art galleries or sketch books (So a reprinted cover in a TPB doesn’t count)
7) No Prints, Promos, Posters or Cards
8) No Books, Novels or Hellboy Companion
9) No "Unpublished" half finished pages from Hellboy Strange Places TPB #6

* (One exception to rule #2 is the 1 page Hellboy panel ad that sort of takes place outside the Hellboy Universe)

Sounds real good, J.

I feel the book interiors (Lost Army etc) plus the Companion should not count (as they're non-sequential).
But I feel the ad pages (there are two right?) and the SDCC '93 story should definitely count, 'cuz back then)* they mattered as much as being 'real comics'.

*(As they do matter still - yet I tried to get my point across.

I agree with you that hellboy books and the companion dont count, as well as "unpublished" pages like from TPB strange places

i will add those two to the list of rules above

Leaving the Hellboy Animated Mignola pin-ups.
I'd say there's an argument for counting those. Although they feel a bit like the Con prints, they could be called 'comic pages' I reckon'.

(I like ending sentences with I reckon' :smile: - makes me feel like I wuz' all spiffy. Like a dog-gone regular maverick. Or a dog-on one which sounds less spiffy, sort of.)

The list is comin' to look great!

the SDCC '93 4 page comic is in the list

and i like to reckon' in the middle of my sentences :-)

as for the Mignola pages in the Animated books im leaning away from including them because they are not interior story pages ... except possibly the one of young hellboy at the radio with lobster johnson in it because that "splash page" i believe is a part of the hellboy universe ... like some pin ups you look at them and they are images of hellboy doing something that hes never done in the comics ... but the young hellboy in view "actually happened" .. like i feel its more canon

anyways thats my feeling ... theres only about 4 pages in the Animated TPB and im leaning on excluding them because they are pin ups

Yeah, I think that the list should just be story pages. If you start getting into pin-ups, there lies madness.

If you start getting into pin-ups, there lies madness.

Your reasoning is ironclad, sirs.
And so the list is made. How cool is that the bar hangs at only one more full comic! If Michael's idea would be followed, I guess that one will feature a two-page poster :tongue:.

I was flipping through my Seed of Destruction red hardcover limited edition and i noticed that there are 15 splash pages just before the story begins.

They show you Professor Broom, the Nazis, the Project Ragnarok emblem, Rasputin, the castle where Hellboy eventually will show up, ect... it kind of is about setting the mood.

Anyways i was wondering if it should count in the "official" tally of Mignola interior art story pages.

Personally i think that it should count because it fits the rules above (thats why i quoted myself :cool:)

However on the dark horse (http://www.darkhorse.com/Books/44-414/Hellboy-Seed-of-Destruction-Ltd-Ed-HC) website they label these pages as an "art section". In my humble opinion I think these are interior art story pages.

And so i added these 15 pages to the 94 originally listed for Seed of Destruction.

Let me know if you think I made the right choice or if these shouldn't count. With only 55 pages to go ... The Magic 1000th Hellboy page might just be only 2 Mignola issues away!

Your rules, your count.

Hope we're all still around when you list page 2,000. Or would that be another thread?:smile:

Well anyone can contribute to the rules, pose and idea for a change if you like.

The page count i inherited from a previous post on the forum, ive only been adding to the original.

I dont think there ever will be a 2,000th page ... i would guess that hellboy will end first. Mike Mignola i think will be drawing less Hellboy over the next 15 years than he has drawn in the first 15.

Feel free to start another thread counting up to 2,000 but it hink it will be a long long time coming

wow 15 pages no less and these are not compiled into the "ultimate" library edition of Seed of Destruction, neither as an intro nor in the art section? what a pity! although I guess they had a good reason not to add them (I'm hoping, to ease my disappointment)

Wel, they'd be exclusive to the limited premium hardcover editions I guess.

They seem like a 15 page long pin-up section so jawdropping gorgeous it almost hurts!

All silent (no text), a bit like the lead ins into Seed of Destruction, the bits captured in those all black page edges, but full page instead of panels. With good guys and bad guys, steampunkin' nazi types and all that, totally in vibe with all that would be Hellboy to the core.
But, like I said, it'll be exclusive, so I better not divulge further :biggrin:.
