While I don't really get why this was posted on a comic book web site, I can't say that I mind. The film and novel versions of High Fidelity rank among my absolute favourites in their respective media. It's one of the few times where I like the adaptation at least as much as the source. While there was more in the book, the performances in the film really elevate the material to all new levels. The casting in this film is staggeringly, perfectly on the money - and Cusack is simply incredible in it.
Great interview, by the way!

I love, love, LOVE this movie. This is the only film that gets absolutely right what it's like to be a collector (of movies, music, comix, whatever).
It also has a great deleted scene on the DVD in which John Cusack meets with Beverly D'Angelo, a spurned wife who is trying to sell of her husband's entire record collection for next to nothing as a way of getting her revenge on him for leaving. Cuscack's reaction to this amazing collection (and the moral dilemma he faces in screwing over a fellow collector) is so accurate.
It's good that they removed that scene from the final film (it would have slowed down the forward momentum of the story), but as a stand-alone scene it's pretty amazing.
I'm all in favor of more features like this on this site. Whether it's incisive analysis of film adaptations of specific comic book properties, or even more tangentially related films like this (movies that capture the sense of being a collector).

George, thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. High Fidelity is one of my all time faves (both in movie and book form) and this was just a fantastically insightful interview. I know it's got nothing to do with comics, but I don't care. Thank you again!

This is the best deleted scene on any DVD that I've ever seen. Every now and then I watch it. It's like a mini-movie.

Thanks. Well one thing that I wanted to try with Pop! was to run all over the map of pop culture with it. A lot of us are into more things than comics. I'm only hoping to really spotlight the things that are special. Like I said, High Fidelity is one of my faves and I wanted to share this story with you guys.

Yeah, when I was reading the book this scene immediately grabbed me as the thing that I missed most in the movie. Needless to say, I was just thrilled to see it there as a really beautifully done deleted scene.

Thank you Jason for writing.
It's funny when I first saw High Fidelity it especially reminded me about the guys who work in comic book stores or talk about movie trivia like it is the most important in world. (I've also been to countless record stores like it in the Village in NYC, where the clerk is ready to knock you if you don't know which particular Yellow Dog bootleg you're looking for.) Everyone has probably met someone like it. It makes me sad to think that for a long time I was a snob like that.
Revisiting this article was a lot of fun for me. This was my final piece for the magazine. Until Pop! started, I wasn't really interested in film after it. I was tired of dealing with publicity agents and jumping though hoops to speak to a "celebrity," that this particular piece seemed like a good way to go out. It was a mainstream film that really had something to say.

You can say that again. I remember the first time I saw that scene and my friends and I freaking out. To be honest, I remember that deleted scene more vividly than I do most of the film.
I also like the deleted bit with Harold Ramis pushing his first forward and whispering pervertedly, "Go."
