Anyone here a fan of Robert E Howard's Solomon Kane? IIRC, he was listed in the HB companion as part of HB's literary history. Anyways, Dark Horse's own Scott Allie is writing a new mini-series about good ol Solomon. Anybody here read it yet?

Love Solomon Kane. Can't wait for the movie that's coming out any day now.

I haven't read the Scott Allie series yet as my store didn't have any in stock, but there is a free original Kane story that Scott did online. It's on the Darkhorse Myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/darkhorsepresents). Issue 11.

There's original BPRD stories on there too for those that haven't checked things out.

While Conan is still my favorite REH creation, Solomon Kane is a very, very close second for me. The collected stories of Kane is easily one of the best anthologies I've ever read.

Yes, I picked up a copy and was finally able to read it. I liked it a lot. It was a great opening issue. I haven't read Howard's stuff but going off of Conan, I like it better when a work expands on his thoughts/stories. Kane seems like an interesting character and I'll see how the story develops in additional issues.

Howard's Solomon Kane has me enticed.
I'm looking forward to mr. Allie's series which looks great. As with Conan I'm way glad Dark Horse gets to 'do Howard's grand fantasy.
Looking forward to reading the complete stories, plus I know of a lushly illustrated book by Gary Gianni, very rare and very expensive, of which a new edition would have my interest. Peaked .

Didn't even know there WAS a Solmon Kane movie coming out! But I'm a big fan of James Purefoy. Hope it's good...

Yeah, the movie is written and directed by Michael Basset, who's done a couple of indie horror films. One was DEATHWATCH, about a ghost haunting the trenches in WWI, starring Andy Serkis. I hadn't heard anything new (http://www.artistlog.com/Default.aspx?tabid=285&grm2id=246&bhcp=1) about the Kane movie since early 2007 though.

Also for Gary Gianni fans, there is a really nicely illustrated (http://www.wanderingstarbooks.com/sk/) edition out. Gary did a ton of line drawings and some paintings for it.

Clearly you're not listening to my podcast. For shame.

Ok, so I just read issue #1 of Allie's first arc. I'm interested to see where this is going. Though I knew a bit of what he was planning, I'm still surprised at where he's taking this previously unfinished REH short.

Sorry. Very few podcasts don't bore me. I haven't started listening to yours.

Really? Me too. That's why I started my own.
That and my vanity.

Im a big fan of REH but i havent read Kane yet so i of course dont go near the comic.

The movie is great news too, is it really James Purefroy in the lead ? I will always dig him after Rome ! Best Marc Anthony since Marlon Brando in Ceasar !

You won't be affected by reading the comic. It embellishes on a storyline that was started, but never continued by REH.

Do read the collected stories of Kane though. Great stuff. I much prefer them to Conan.

Still i read Conan DH comics before i read REH and now that im a fan i wont do the same again. Nothing against the comics i have respect for what DH is doing. Their Conan is nearer to REHs than many other comics. I just want to have REH's Kane in my mind first than read the comics. Its not about the story.

Best thing about DH REH comics is those pages that draw pictures to REH's letters. It was interesting seeing REH writing about struggling to get published in his own time when he gets printed more often many fantasy authors these days.

I seriously hope the collected version gets the hard cover treatment like the Conan material did.

Del Rey did an affordable reprint a couple of years ago. I'm glad I got the Wandering Star edition when it was (relatively) cheap.

You have to be extremely careful when opening it, though. Beams of Pure Awesome shoot out and hit you in the head. Three hours later, you realize you're drooling at the artwork.

I'm enjoying this series so far. I'm still on the fence about the quality of the art. In some panels the loose "pencilled" style is great. Seems like Guevara needs to work on the shading a little bit. Sometimes when Kane's face is in shadow it looks strange and inconsistent with the setting.

The custom Kane figure I had made is nearing completion. All the guy has to do is finish the hat. Here is the figure so far.

Kane sans cloak, with Bible and cat-head staff given to him by N'Longa.

Kane with cloak and swords. All that is left to finish is the hat. Pretty sweet, huh?

Some finished pics of the custom figure. I requested kind of a combination between the classic Kane look and the current Dark Horse version. This is the result, and I am ecstatic about it.

With cloak removed. Cloak has 2 sword scabbards on the back, and I have a bandolier with 3 flintlock pistols to go across his torso.

View of swords w/scabbards.
included but not shown: Staff of Solomon, pouch w/ powder and shot for his pistols, ginormous Puritan Bible, and I am going to add some daggers. What say you guys?

Just read issue 3. Slightly confused, but still interested to see where things go.

I loved the first issue, and am intrigued by the character of Solomon Kane.

However, by issue 3, it seems that not enough has happened. And all the character's voices sound alike. Just not enough going on. I love the hell out of Scott Allie, but this series hasn't been as dynamic as I'd hoped.

Kane is largely in the background of issues 2 and 3. I feel like Silent and the Lord are more of the focus.

Fair criticism. I agree. I think Kane should get more face time in a book that carries his namesake.
