I just got a new PS3 80 gig model. While I still have my PS2 and (with this revelation and now may not part with it), I was hoping that my PS3 would be able to play my PS2 games.

Anyone know if there may be a patch for the system or am I out of luck?

If you have a PS3 that doesn't have backwards compatibility, you're out of luck.

Kind of thought I was grasping at straws here.

Ah well. I'm not unhappy with my purchase.

If only I had an HDTV to fully appreciate my new purchase.

It's the Christmas bonus that'll get me that item.

Thanks for the replies, fellas.

The 80gb was supposed to have some backwards compatibility, though it was done through emulation. I believe the 80gb model that has the compatibility through emulation is the CECHE01 model number.

You can actually go to the playstation site and check whcih games are compatible with the 80gb PS3.

Here's the link:

The new 80 gigs aren't BC, the older ones are.

A high up employee of Sony stated that the reason for the new PS3s not being backward compatible was to sell PS3 games. Ofcourse one can't take the word of an employee, no matter how high up, as company policy.

It'd be great if they did make them all BC, I still have a lot of PS2 games that I still like to play once in a while. As it is, I still have my PS2 and it's not like I couldn't just get another if it died.

I bit the bullet a while back and picked up a 60gb PS3, which has the full backward compatibility. I've found that I don't play a lot of older PS2 games on it, but games like Yakuza 2 or even Lego Batman (which is $20 cheaper for the PS2) make me glad I have the ability to play PS2 games on the new system.

It's ironic that when the system launched, Sony was calling the Xbox 360 out for its lack of backward compatibility, claiming it was very important. Now they downplay it because they took it out to make a cheaper console.

As long as the PS2 continues to sell as well as it still does future PS3s will probably remain backward compatible free. Once the PS2 stops selling as well as it does, I wouldn't be surprised to see them bring it back.

...runs off to go give his 60 gig a hug...

Yeah, I agree. I realize that when I got the PS2, I didn't have all that much of an urge to play some of my old PS1 games. However, I really fell in love with gaming once again (I really loved gaming back in the SNES days) when I got my PS2 and there were all these SWEET games for that system. God of War, MGS, Shadow of the Colossus, etc.

I'm not ready to abandon those games yet. I still have to finish MGS2.

One story making the rounds is that with the Playstation Store, Sony is plannign on selling more games, including PS2 games, so if the system is not backwards compatable with the games, you have to buy them if you want to play them.

Which is goofy that it still is PS1 backwards compatable.

But then, they could always release a PS2 emulator update to allow you to play the games on the system.

That's not a simple prospect though. Emulating both the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer is not an easy task. Look at the state of PS2 emulators for PCs as an example.
