I've been going through The Flash Companion again, reading everything in detail this time, and recently discovered something that surprised me: When Bilson and De Meo were putting together the 1990 Flash TV series (http://www.hyperborea.org/flash/tv.html), the network's first choice to play the lead was Jack Coleman, best known today as Noah Bennet, the man with the horn-rimmed glasses on Heroes.
I dug up a photo of him from his run on Dynasty in the late 1980s. Here it is next to a picture of Barry from Showcase #4:
