View Full Version : Which version of Archangel do you prefer?

Avenging Angel
05 to X-Factor. Wings, light bones, enhanced sight, hearing, etc.
Archangel
Death to Rebirth. Metal wings, poisoned flechettes, blue skin and bad attitude.
After Rebirth
Feather wings, blue skin. Not much else...
Glowing Gold
This happened during an issue or two of Wolverine just after the 12 storyline wrapped. Warren was helping Wolverine readjust to life after being the horseman Death. His hair, feathered wings and eyes were glowing a bright yellowish gold, and his fingers were really sharp. He had the power to heal with a touch and seemingly burned this power out healing the paralyzed original War. I like to think of it as an extreme level of the blood healing abilities he'd later discover he had.
Healing Blood and Magik's Sword
Feather wings, regularly colored skin, healing blood, and wielding Magik's soul sword (from Exiles).
Angel/Archangel
As it's already been said, basically a blue skinned metal winged version of Hulk, although I prefer to think of it as Archangel's answer to a berserker rage (hey, its not like Wolverine has them anymore).
Just wondering which version people liked the most. I checked to see if there was already a poll like this and there was, but it was a year old and there's the new transforming version to add to the list.
It seems like every version of Archangel with feather wings gave writers trouble finding things for him to do, unless of course there was a chase scene.
I liked the idea of him having Magik's soul sword, I thought it looked really good (even though I hated the art at the time), but I don't think it really worked all that well in a team story setting about mutants.
I think that the version I'm calling the "glowing gold" one had some potential, it was something different, while this transforming thing is sort of treading old ground while being something a bit different. I'm holding out hope that that side might once again pop up in a few years, maybe as a third transformation form, or if this current transforming thing ever comes to a close.
The other thing I'm now wondering is, if all this time Archangel has had Apocalypse's nano-techs in his system, does that mean he's infected everyone he's healed with his blood with those nano-techs?

I kinda like the "I ... am ... Death!" Archangel, all blue skin and techno-organic wings first seen in X-Factor and presently occupying a position in X-Force. I know there are many Angel purists out there, but Archangel is a cool visual and his relationship with his wings (and with Apocalypse, by extension) make him an interesting contrast to the billionaire playboy Warren Worthington, III is. Bruce Wayne he ain't, but the concept is still rife with story potential in my opinion.
And did Angel with the Soul Sword (not to be confused with the true 'Soulsword' - one word) do anything with that blade? He picked it up in Exiles (or Uncanny, I forget) and said he couldn't give it back to Illyana because it felt right to have it, but were there subsequent issues that showed him doing something with it? Was it just a flashy piece of jewelry, then? I'm speculating because I'm not sure how different Exiles Illyana's Soul Sword differs from New Mutants Illyana's Soulsword: what does / did it do, could only Illyana wield its full potential like 616 Illyana could, etc.

Usually, I find the blue skin and metal wings to be a bit, well, stupid. However, I am content with his current status. Yost and Kyle have made the Archangel interesting so far, and I still get the version of Warren I want to see in Uncanny.

I admit metal wings Archangel was what got me interested in the character at first (mainly b/c he was the only version around at the time), but the first comic of my collection (my mom used to buy me some before then, but back then we treated them like magazines, to be read once then thrown out  ) was the issue where Warren got his apparently natural, feathered wings back, and that's when I fell in love with the character. Since then, I've been an Angel purist, and was happy when the last vestiges of Apocalypse (the blue skin) left his system. I've already documented my feelings about his new "artificial" wings here (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=240144), but I will say that despite my feelings on the subject, I am still glad the writers at least found a way so that both camps could be happy. I still love the character, and the stories have been incredible, it's just my own nitpick as a diehard Angel-fan.
Bingo!

Warren is way more dynamic as a Jekyll / Hyde than just a winged mutant or an Apocalpyse abomination.

I don't think he ever actually did anything useful with it, but he did carry it around for a bit as I remember at least three different artists drew it... but hey back then that could have all been in just 1 issue.

Hey! Archangel! Post pics! This should be an appreciation thread!
http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/229/92615-184097-archangel_super.jpg
here, we have abomination Archangel in his classic costume! Look at all that pink! He works it tho. This was around the time when he stopped wearing that scary hood. His skin was really pale and cyanotic tho. But, I think he was dating that cop lady at the time.
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Realm/6198/X-Men/Angel1.jpg
this is a pic of abomination Archangel going through the big 'change.' Psylocke was dating him at the time, but she was slightly psychotic and eerie with her new shadow powers. She was not there for him during his time of need. Ozymandias also stopped by to belittle Warren during his time of pain.
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/marveldatabase/images/1/1b/Angel_I_002.jpg
Here's a pic of Archangel in a new costume after he finally got over himself. Cyclops had just kicked him off the X-Men for some reason, but I can't remember why. He was also doing questionable things with young Paige Guthrie at this time as well.

Hmm...I envision a version that probably doesn't exist yet. Warren with the healing blood and the sword, but with the ability to "Archangel Out" (i.e. Hulk Out) as seen in the most recent issue of X-Force. I'd like that a lot. It would be the best of both worlds.

I prefer Warren as he was intended with his original mutation, but with the codename Archangel, instead. It fits him more now than "Angel" does. Save "Angel" for when Angel Salvatore get's her powers back:tongue:
But this "best of both worlds" Archangel/Death is bareable. He's blue sometimes in X-Force and normal in Uncanny and that's fine with me for now.

My favorite Angel is the blue-skinned, feather-winged businessman we saw in Casey's Uncanny run. He would've made a great permanent leader, also.

I wish we'd have had Larsen's light wings more. My fave is probably blue skinned and feather winged, though I like the healing blood it just shouldn't have changed his skin tone imo.
I liked the J+H current Archangel a lot initially but the more I think about it, the less I like it. :/

Yes, he retained those through every incarnation, I was just noting them as part of his original (and too often underutilized) power set.

I liked the J+H current Archangel a lot initially but the more I think about it, the less I like it. :/Yeah, same with me. I loved the idea when it was first floated around (when we saw the cover for #5), but before it was actually revealed. I guess since the #5 cover made it inevitable that metal wings Archangel was coming back, I just latched onto the compromise b/c at least it would allow regular Angel to appear in Uncanny (and not just some image inducer-ed Archangel). Now that I've had more time to think about it, I'm not as happy with it as before. Don't get me wrong tho, except for my pet peeve about the"artificiality" of his wings, I'm on board for the great stories they've been releasing involving both of Warren's forms. I just hope they deal w/ the split personas quickly and cleanly. I've never liked angsty Warren, so I hope they allow him to "beat" his residual Apocalypse programming and move past all the doom and gloom to some semblance of normalcy/acceptance while he's in his metal-wings state.

I'm a big Warren fan (one of my top 5 X-Men) and honestly I like them all, from original through to Gold wings to now. I do have a special appreciation for what you call the rebirth Angel with blue skin but feathered wings. But I'm happy anytime Angel is getting some focus.
Austen Angel would probably be my least favorite but it's got an unfair negative bias because I don't like Austen's writing. It also irks me that the healing and Soul Sword basically just disappeared without comment.

I'm just a huge fan of Warren, in any incarnation so long as he's given at least a proper spotlight instead of being a background piece. I'm not ashamed to admit that the sole reason I picked up X-Force in the first place was because I heard Warren was in it... and promptly got hooked into a series with a premise I had no interest in giving a chance. Warren is also the same reason why I haven't dropped Uncanny yet.
Enihoo, on with the Angel pictures that'll most likely break tables:
