Lone Ranger

I posted these over at my Comics Should Be Good column, but I'm asking you seasoned geeks for help. While browsing some old Charlton westerns, I noticed some swipes by Bill Black.

There are three other covers that are very familiar to me, but I can't place the original images. Do these ring a bell with anyone?
The first cover is a pretty generic scene and I know of others like it but haven't been able to find the specific pose. The outlaw on the left of the middle cover has what I call a 'Maneely butt'. The 3rd cover is the one that really driving me nuts. I'm certain that I've seen it before.

I can't help you out in any way, I'm afraid but I just wanted to say that this...

...is a great looking cover! Really makes me wanna get my hands on a copy and dive inside...and I have to say that with the exception of Jonah Hex, I'm not a fan of western comics at all.

He said Maneely butt:biggrin:
Good luck.
This happens to me all the time. I see a swipe/homage cover on the GCD and make a mental note of it.
But much later, when I really need that cover, I can't find it.
So you will not find the covers you are looking for as long as you are looking for them. But when you stop looking for them, you will find them.

The cover of Gunfighters 78 (comic on the left) is taken from the Magazine Enterprises title Best of the West #3 (aka A-1 Comics #52)

Here's another possible swipe/homage of the Lone Ranger cover...
Rawhide Kid #140 (http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=221830&zoom=4)
... I'll keep in mind those other two.

I found some more after looking through the GCD.
Here's Gunfighters swiping from itself!

I'd place those two Gunfighter covers more in the category of "reprint", rather than "swipe." They are pretty much duplicates of one another, other than a colour change and minor background deletions.

And they moved the falling gun.

Yes, I saw that after I posted ROK. Everything was moved up a quarter of an inch or so, including the newly designed logo and Charlton slug, on the later cover (issue #81). The figures feet are correspondingly close to cut off in the later issue as well. This all freed up space to reposition the gun on a plane parallel to the gunfighter on the right's hand. The way the pictures are posted, issue #81 actually looks physically larger than the earlier issue (#61).

Weird, those swipe covers seem to be popping up all over the place...
Best of the West #12 (AC) (http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=328692&zoom=4)
Latigo Kid #1(AC) (http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=307906&zoom=4)
... except the originals. :)
Who in the world is "AC Comics" anyway? Apparently they must have bought some of the Charlton comic line when Charlton went bust and reprinted them... swipes and all! :)
And they moved the falling gun.
Yeah, and for some reason that gun and the one in the leg holster were both made into silhouettes. Was there some policy about not portraying guns realistically on covers (even though shooting them is obviously OK)?
Both versions look like they were cropped on the right--the composition is kinda clumsy looking.

AC Comics was founded by Bill Black and has been around in one form (and name) or another since 1969. They currently deal almost exclusively in Golden Age reprints. Black negotiated the rights to most of Charlton's works that hadn't been sold to DC. He's also negotiated the reprint rights to a lot of the movie star westerns (Roy Rogers, Tom Mix, etc.) and reprints public domain stories.
