View Full Version : Black Canary's hair... How do you like it?

I come to the home of BC's greatest voice to ask you fine people how you think Dinah's hair looks best. I have a hell of a time drawing this gal and the hair always gives me trouble. What do you prefer? The brushed down bang thingie she's been sporting lately? something different. LEMME KNOW!

I actually like it the way it is now. It's sharp looking, something Tyra would call "fierce" (yes, a friend of mine got me suckered into watching America's Next Top Model -- shut up! ).
And Mr. Norton, I just want to say that I really appreciate your work. It's wonderful.

Hmm. Good question!
All I can say for sure is that the manga-style hair she had for a while looks very dated now, and I think short hair doesn't quite fit her bombshell image.
I'll give it some thought!

But "Cereally (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leRd02YRWvI)" Put me down for the "Stay 100% true to Amanda Connors design" (even thou she had the same hair style way back when the BOP ongoing started and Greg Land had talent)

This might be a little too 80s, but I prefer it to the completely straight look.

I think it's fine for it to change from time to time.... BUT it should always invoke the classic hairstyle of a different blonde starlet from Hollywood's Golden Age. That's where he image originates, and I'd like to see it change, but always invoke Lana Turner, Bette Grable et al.... even Kim Novak.

She should have bangs the way Benes draws them. I feel like the blond bangs are as iconic as the fishnets. Please don't give her short hair!

Ooo, yeah. NOT short hair.
I'm not crazy about the straight look either.
And while I'm not overly fold of the bangs, what I do love is Black Canary with wild, waving hair. A little bit "bed-head in motion". She should NOT be a perfectly quoffed gal. She should be adventurous, free-spirited, and have hair a guy would want to play with.
And blonde. Sure, she's a bottle blonde, but she takes real good care of it. (And I'm certainly not one to throw any stones on that subject!)

Agreed.
I don't like Benes' "cheesecakey" Black Canary, but her hair style is perfect the way he draws it.

The Benes bangs are kinda Bette Page, but blonde, so I'm not sure about my feelings there.

I agree with Pink Bat, that she shouldn't stray too far from the original:

I like how it is drawn currently.
The original look seems silly to me, really doesn't seem a good haircut for fighting crime. It's on the same level as heels for me :)

I like Black Canary's hair with a backwards toss as she's walking out on Green Arrow. That would make the apotheosis of Black Canary hairstyles, IMO. On a less catty note, why not a modernized take on "Farrah Hair"? Think Paulo's win for the wig challenge on Shear Genius, except blonde.

While it would make a good style, I agree, I try to also think "how would other artists draw it"'? It's easy to take a 'fun' cut and, generic it up, and presto... instant disaster. I mean, look how many ways just BC's _ponytail_ was portayed by artists.
I'm a big fan of keep it simple.

The Veronica Lake thing would be a problem; she was, if I remember right, nicknamed 'The girl with the peekaboo hair' because it covered one eye, and it was banned for War Workers because it tended to get tangled in machinery.
In my opinion, Black Canary should be petite and harmless-looking; it should be a shock she's as deadly as she is.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/BnL/blackcanary.jpg
I just made this in MS Paint. I think it's be a good look for Dinah, for a few reasons. It's appropriately sexy, while still keeping her hair out of her face. It's also not a "trendy" hairstyle that will look really dated in a year or two. It's classic enough to stand the test of time.

I don't see the practicality of her hair becoming more of any more of an issue than Batman's excessive cape. Suspend that disbelief, soldier!

I've always like that dichotomy as well. The current design totally looks like someone who'd kick a lot of ass.

I always dug this cover because, ignoring the fact that it looks like she has a waist made out of cardboard tubes, she looks like she just put up her hair and is ready to kick the ever loving snot out of everyone in the room.

It makes sense now that she's in the league, I guess. But as a street level hero, it seemed to fit that she'd diguise her deadliness behind a harmless-looking exterior.

An now.. using pictures of the only woman in the world who should ever be allowed to play Black Canary,, Nicky Whelan.. I will now show you the best style!
Currently Black Canary has a style similar to this
http://www.deanmccartney.com/Artists/10302/Mediums/Medium_8282007104714PM_Fashion%20folio40%20copy.JP G
And thats all well and good, as long as her hair has SOME ... bounce to it (like in GA/BC) and not dead flat like it is in JLA..
But I prefer this look
http://www.fanpix.net/photos/1L/73/301173_large.jpg
http://www.fanpix.net/photos/1L/70/301170_large.jpg
The shoulder length wet-look... its just... better.
I wold not have any problems with going back to the "classic" some long strands in front and a ponytail.. like this
http://www.fanpix.net/photos/4L/18/240418_large.jpg
However.. thats kinda identical to what Mia has.. (and for me..Mias hair especially in costume should never be changed..)
I hope you all enjoyed this little show..
and yes all you aussies.. I want an aussie to play Black Canary.. but NOT Wonder Woman.. (that man-jaw megan gale will be WW over my dead body!)

yes.. but all down to the artist..
Ed drew it very "Mangaish" back then..
but look at Mias hair.. same hair style but different artistic style.. and it looks good

Just wanted to say, Mike Norton, that I think your artwork is stellar.
I tend to prefer the classic look but I always like to see what good artists would do if someone told them, "hey, do what you like. Go crazy."

Mike,
I have been trying for years and my wife refuses to dress like any superhero. As a matter of fact she says I talk about superheroes too much. if you were to draw Dinah's hair like my wife's perhaps you could take part in helping me through this dilemma.
Sean
P.S. Seeing as I felt dirty after typing that, I have to admit that I was a huge fan of the Gary Frank look but agree with the comments that the long hair with the bangs like the current JLA book features is really sharp. She always comes off to me as having a strength to her. She looks like she is ready for business.
I will say this. I like what you did with her in issue 14 when she was with Ollie at teh table and in the closing scene. I know my wife (I promise I am not going there again) wears her hair more relaxed at home and those scenes had a look of comfort. Yet when she goes to work, she goes to work or we go out, she is all business.
Same hair length but maybe slight variation is ok? Any thoughts?
