View Full Version : Paul Newman
Paul Newman wasn’t just a hell of an actor, he was a hell of a guy.
I mean just what is there exactly not to love about a movie star, race car driver who operates summer camps for disabled and dying children, comes up with a highly successful retail line but doesn’t take a dime out of it and instead gives all of the profits to those same sick and dying kids. A man considered one of the most attractive, desirable men on the planet, but who stays married to the same woman for almost 50 years. A man who marched and fought for civil rights, human rights the rights of women and children and the oppressed all over the world.
And a man who managed to look totally cool while doing it.
I will truly miss Paul Newman.
He was a great actor who made some truly wonderful movies over the years, but he was also a man I admired and from everything I have ever heard, was to top it all off, a nice guy.
My deepest sympathy to Joanne Woodward and the kids.

The world's a whole lot darker today.
Amen Mr. Newman.
I intend to live by his example and look hot in my seventies.

His lemonade makes me throw up a little, the popcorn is awesome...
He was a great man. I really had more affection for him than is probably healthy for a way to feel about someone you've never met, but he also seemed to wink at me and tell me it's OK, no matter what rogue bastard he played, or whatever mean streak his character had. Being able to perfectly characterize your character while not maintaining that fourth wall completely is a tricky thing, and you really feel the man in your room while watching his movies with his arm on your shoulder going "damn, that was a good one".
I also watch slap shot every time I feel down and it picks me right up.

RIP. I'll be sure to catch a movie with Mr. Newman in it, today.
I intend to live by his example and look hot in my seventies.
It's what he'd want us to do.

It stings a little. The performance world is a losing a lot of its role models this year.

If I had a list of favorite actors, he'd be one of the few. Cool Hand Luke is one of my all time favorite movies.

Damnit, there goes another one of the world's most worthwhile celebrities. They don't make them like Paul Newman anymore, and I'm depressed to say that I don't think they ever will.
Godspeed.

Paul Newman, to me, was one of the ageless wonders (the dude who plays as Kain in the Command and Conquer games is another).
His hair grays, his movements decrease (even just slightly), but he's still the cool looking dude he once was. Sharp acting, level headed personality (compared to modern Hollywood), and a sense of cool beyond his time period.
He will keep this up in heaven, I know it.
RIP Paul Newman, the dictionary picture example of cool. And great popcorn, too.

If a Justice League movie had been made during the 1960s, I'd have wanted Paul Newman to play Green Lantern/Hal Jordan and Robert Redford to play the Flash/Barry Allen.

I always thought Mr. Newman was a very remarkable and accomplished man. Pity Hollywood doesn't turn out stars like that any more.

*tips hat* what can I say that hasn't been said a hundred times now? Paul Newman had a set of the most piercing blue eyes I've ever seen, probably what made the ladies melt.
Now, I must put his movies on my queue.

... It's gonna take a hell of a lot to watch 'Cars' again without getting a little misty-eyed when Doc Hudson comes onto the screen now. =(

What a bummer. :frown:
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid is probably my all-time favourite movie...this really sucks.
I'm gonna watch Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid tomorrow out of respect for a hell of an actor and a great human being (and 'cause I love it).

An obituary by a former counselor (http://www.slate.com/id/2201116/) at one of Newman's camps.
But Newman never stopped believing he was a regular guy who'd simply been blessed, and well beyond what was fair. So he just kept on paying it forward. He appreciated great ideas for doing good in the world—he collected them the way other people collect their own press clippings—and he didn't care where they came from. Whether you were a college kid, a pediatric oncologist, or a Hollywood tycoon, if you had a nutty plan to make life better for someone, he'd write the check himself or hook you up with somebody who would.
He was one helluva guy.

Didn't Gil Kane base Hal on Newman?
Yes, which is why Newman would have been perfect in the role.
And Redford would have complemented a Newman/Hal perfectly as Barry Allen.

It's a shame. There's a few Newman movies in my collection, all of which are great. I think it's Slapshot for me that's the favorite. He was in a few sport-related movies and that's some good stuff.

Paul Newman was simply the greatest film actor of the Twentieth Century. That he was also a political activist of rare integrity, a devoted family man and a genuine humanitarian makes his loss all the more grievous.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna dig out my copy of The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean...

I just remember his one movie with Tom Cruise and that was colour of money. I liked that one and his serious character was simply superb.
We will certainly miss him but he lived his life not like Heath Ledger.

He was my favorite actor. For all that I don't watch a lot of cinema, I was deeply influenced by his movies from an early age. From Hombre to WUSA, from Slap Shot to Absence of Malice, he could convey a sense of dignity in defeat, and a sense of restless defiance that always spoke to my own need for independence and self-respect.
I don't think it was by chance that I saw and was affected by his take as actor and director on Sometimes a great notion many years before reading the book. The contradictions of Hank Stamper are those of a man whose heart is filled with love for the people that surround him, but at the same time isn't willing to let anyone decide for himself what is right and wrong. I'm sure that same spirit drove him to stand out from the crowd more than his looks or good fortune.
He endured what must have been tremendous bitterness with the loss of his son, but he carried on and continued to inspire with the intensity of his art and the example of his life until the very end.
