If they kill him off for real, it would be Joker doing it.

Dick Grayson. It should be a situation where Bruce had totally lost control and had to be put down. As he dies, he'd tell Dick he did the right thing.

For a "Death of Batman" story I would want two things

1. Some random guy pulling the trigger
2. Joker waging a one man war against that man. Then retiring.

If it was the end and it was determined that Batman/Bruce Wayne had to die, I see Batman and the Joker killing each other. It would be bittersweet.

That would be cool too. I wonder though, will the police cover up the Bruce Wayne is Batman thing, cause I would imagine that would lead to a nasty little scandal.

i doubt nightwing, robin, or any else in the bat-family would let that happen. but fun to read anyway

I think if one realizes Bruce is Batman, then that kind of messes up the secret identities of everyone else. So yes, it would be in the best interest for the Batman's identity to cover it up. The problem is, in my opinion, the police are going to find the body first, and they might well decide to figure out who batman really is.

However, in The Dark Knight Returns, after Bruce "dies" it is revealed that Bruce was Batman, meaning that it seems likely such an event would occur if Bruce were to die.

Ultimately, it depends on how Batman die. I see Jim intervening and since there's a great deal of speculation that he already knows who Batman is, I see him overseeing the transactions of Batman's body by labeling it as a John Doe thus protecting the secret identity.

I like the losing control idea, however, in the end, Bruce gains enough control to kill himself.

Let's face it,. batd1ck wouldn't let anyone else kill him!

It would be a funny elseworld story if the man who would kill Batman is....Harley Quin.Imagine the reaction of Joker learning that Harley succeded were Joker failed(sort of like Mad Love).

He and Jason Todd taking down each other after seeing Jason too berserk to stay alive. Does Jason have fans that they returned him to life?

"Knights Passed" made me touched and feel sorry for Todd, but he's best dead

If Harley knew Bruce was Batman (does she? I am not sure, I haven't read alot of Harley arcs outside BTAS) she could do more than simply kill him, she could probably, with enough resources, break the bat. Considering her background, and considering Bruce Wayne's traumatic past, I could imagine Harley holding an attack on Bruce Wayne's friends, allies, confidents, while keeping her own hand out of it. Bruce Wayne is obviously someone with abadonment issues, so you make him feel abadoned, to the point where he has a nervous breakdown, and then you watch as the Batman dies, leaving the hallow shell of Bruce Wayne alive. Allowing Ms. Quinzel the Joker to herself. Assuming it doesn't backfire and lead the Joker into a coma ala the dark knight returns

For that matter why hasn't Hugo Strange done that?

+1.
Or, adding on another post, H.Quinn kills him, thinking that'll impress the Joker enough to allow her into his heart. Unfortunately she thinks wrong and Joker ends up killing her, avenging Batman. Joker then retires because, with Batman dead and gone, "what's the point"?

Having Joker kill Batman would be too obvious. Not to mention that since he already killed Jason Todd it's a bit "been-there-done-that".

As has been said, Batman should never die. And not just for the practical reasons of marketability, but because what he stands for won't allow it.

But I understand that this is a theoretical query about what would most define him, OTHER than living and fighting forever, so I'll roll with it.

The answer is...

He wouldn't die at the hand of any villain.

He'd die doing something heroic and self-sacrificing, but no villain would "take" the victory. Its in line with the idea that "nobody can truly end Batman other than Batman" without being as literal as to mean retirement or suicide. One of those "one of us has to die to save the others" type endings. You know the kind I'm talking about--the person who has to stay at the controls while something heads into the sun while everyone else escapes, or the one who has to enter the radiation filled chamber to save the ship, or the one who has to hold off the pack of monsters while everyone else runs. Not any of those literally, but something like that, with a twist making the sacrifice to directly save some or all of the Batman core set of characters (I'd define that as Dick, Tim, Barbara, Commish Gordon, and Alfred, perhaps also adding Cassandra too after this many years--none of who have super-powers, so it would allow that kind of sacrifice in a way which would be more believable that if, lets say, Superman or Hal Jordan was along for the final ride).

It's a cliche, yes, but its one of the BEST cliches. Since we are talking about a theoretical notion which can never come to pass, at the very least its the one which most defines him.

For something a bit less tragic than Batman turning bad, there is one scenario I really like. The killer would just be "some punk who gets lucky", but it's the circumstances that would really be important. He dies intervening in a mugging, saving a couple would would have likely been shot in front of their child. Just for extra punch, the kid should be Terry McGuiness or Carrie Kelly.
