Anybody else pick up the new Brian Wilson yet? I'm only on my second listen, but so far I'm really diggin' it.

The music is, of course, magnificent.

The lyrics and vocals remind the listener why Brian used to get somebody else to do those bits.

I plan to get this. Howyadoin', have you heard Smile ? Does this new CD compare to that brilliance?

Oh, come on! That's a bit of a tall order, surely?!

SMiLE is Brian's magnum opus after all.

That's like asking if the latest Paul McCartney album compares to the brilliance of Revolver. I mean, I'm prepared to believe that Brian Wilson's new album might be a good listen, and may even be a very strong "late period" Brian Wilson album but realistically it's never gonna be up to the stella standards of Pet Sounds or SMiLE is it?

I just think that maybe your expectations are a tad unrealistic.

Maybe. But since Brian Wilson recorded Smile in it's entirety in 2004 and finally released it, the echoes of that seminal record might still be with him. This new record is Wilson's first album since 2004's Smile so I wondered if it was in the same vein. It's possible.

It's possible, of course, but let's not forget that there was no "new" music in 2004's SMiLE. All of it's componant parts were written and arranged back in 1966/1967.

Brian's lead vocals, I meant specifically. The backing/harmony vocals are fantastic, of course.

TLOS is, in my opinion, just a notch below Brian's 1988 self-titled debut. Very good, for sure.
