both are good but there is more joker in hush but none really are focused on the joker. i personally like both and couldn't decide which is better.

1. I'd say Hush might be more important for someone looking to get into current Bat-comics, as it sets up a few things that have been since followed up on...plus Hush is currently involved in a large arc in Detective comics.
2. Long Halloween is the better story, IMO
3. The Joker doesn't play a particularily important role in either story, I'd say about the same.
4. You don't need to read Dark Victory to understand LH at all...but DV is a sequel, and worth reading if you enjoy LH.

I loved The Long Halloween's take on Harvey Dent and the Falcone's. The fact that it was a mystery, and the twist ending which made absolutely no sense. (Though in retrospect it makes sense that Holiday is two people and only one of them is a member of the Falcone family.)
I thought the Joker was drawn horribly. I prefer my art to look like a real person more or less. (Read Case study to see my ideal.)

1 is long halloween more essental for new readers?
it's interesting and accesible to new readers cause it features so many villains and a pivotal stage in batman lore. it's also a very moody and noir batman which a lot of new readers really respond to. essential? only if you think reading the fall of Harvey Dent and rise of freaks is essential I guess. you should definitly read it eventually
2 witch is the better read?
Long Halloween
3 witch one does joker play a better role in?
it's kinda equal. he's pretty silly in both of them. they're not good joker appearances
4 if I get long halloween to understand everything do I have to read dark victory?
yep. Dark Victory enhances TLH alot, to me they're the same story

(Though in retrospect it . . .
Seriously . . . considering the fact that the poster was a new reader asking which he should buy, why on Earth would you reveal the ending . . . how bizarre . . .
I just re-read Hush last weekend and was surprised at how minimal Joker's role was, it is possible the same would happen if I read Long Halloween. Either way, TLH is the one I would recommend.

I prefer LH because I'm into noir stuff.... so if you are too, that's worth considering.
I don't know how important art is to you, but Jim Lee's art in Hush is amazing, and I've always thought Tim Sale's art is... weird.

Hush is pretty good, but to me Long Halloween is freakin awesome. If you can get both Long Halloween and Dark victory and read them back to back, it is kind of a continuous story. I also vote dick-move on spoiling any of the mysteries of those stories.

Long Halloween is more of a "whodunnit?" fim-noir of a story, so it appeals to me a bit more than Hush (which I did enjoy as well)

1. Long Halloween is probably a better start for new readers because it is a good self-contained story, though Hush had a greater impact on continuity.
2. Long Halloween by far. I didn't care for Hush very much except for the artwork.
3. As others have said, the Joker does not have a major role in either story and appears about equally.
4. You do not to get Dark Victory to understand TLH. However, if you are planning on getting DV, you should definitely read TLH first because it is a direct sequel that picks right up where TLH left off.

TLH is a Harvey Dent story-not a Joker story. That said, despite the artwork, there are great instances of Joker logic in the piece.

Lew Moxon, is it too late for you to edit the post with the spoilers in it? If you can you might want to try doing that.

Well, the person who hadn't read it has already seen what I wrote, though I suppose I can put spoilers in for other people. How do spoilers work on this site?

HUSH is a good intro for new readers. It's more of a guide than a "story."

I would rank the three stories like
1.DV
2.TLH
3.Hush
read TLH, than DV, than Hush
TLH and DV are good. Hush is good but the very last chapter is disappointing to me.
all good though, I like DV best though.

I enjoyed Long Halloween much more than Hush, and more than Dark Victory as well.
I'd definitely agree that Hush was the worst of the three stories, but was still enjoyable. Plus, Jim Lee's art is beautiful.
I would always recommend Batman: Year One, Long Haloween and Dark Victory to people who want to get into Batman.

Hee! Tim Sale's art grew on me after a few readings...i wasn't fond of it at first but it just seemed to fit the style of Long Halloween so well. I love that book.

Sale's Dick Grayson in DV is a very weird looking little guy. Little spindly goblin legs and big head. And his Joker is a pretty terrifying looking creature. Apart from that, though, I really like his art on those two books.

Don't worry too much. Even people who've read it don't agree on "who done it".
Btw, I think Long Halloween is far superior to Hush.
Spoilers are done like this: [spoil ] [/ spoil] (without the spaces).
